The Fine Print

  • For online orders there is a limit of $300 per household
  • Gift cards can not be used on December 4th; you can redeem your gift cards starting Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. PT/ 11 a.m. ET
  • Minimum $10 and maximum $300 get the 10% discount

Our Verdict

We posted about this a while back. At that time we weren’t sure if it would be available online too; the good news came in now that it’s available for both.

There’s a limit of just 1 per household for online orders, but you can do $300 in-store and another $300 online.

The system will block you from getting the discount on more than $300. It might be possible to get more than $300 by checking out in separate transactions in-store, but the cashiers are likely trained to limit this deal to one per person.

Don’t pay for the gift cards with your REDcard since you won’t get the 5% discount on Target gift cards. If you have a Visa/MC which offers a bonus at the grocery, it’s likely you’ll get those bonus points at Target too. Otherwise, use your regular go-to daily spending card.

Currently, there isn’t any easy gc-reselling opportunity with these gift cards, but many people will be able to use the Target gift cards organically. Instead of the standard 5% discount you get at Target with REDcard, you’ll get 10% + credit card points.

Last year they gave me a big problem refusing to sell w/ CC. Laughable but from cashiers to the managers all were trained not to sell target GCs with anything but cash. Made my trip worthless. And I was buying only one

If I purchase amex gift card in cvs for $270, so I can get 5% from chase freedom, can I use it to buy target gift card?

Yes, you can. As a matter of fact, I have purchased 8K of amex gift card from CVS for the past two week using OBC and I have spent 3K of Amex gift card already. I hope I won’t attract American express’s attention.

Deirdre

No, they don’t allow VISA or Amex’s, only other retailers, or their own Target gift cards can be purchased with a Target GC.

I’ve never been able to purchase target gift card with another gift card online.

I haven’t used all if my staples amex offers. Staples has target gift cards. So that deal is effecting 20% off. If you consider target like cash it is a great way to use the offer.

You should be able to use them to buy these discounted target cards too…I have been able to buy target gift cards with other target gift cards in the past.

They have recently (~2 months ago) stopped allowing this. I used to buy target gift cards to combine multiple low-value gift cards, but that stopped working (at least online). I haven’t tried in store, though.

I did a test run this morning at my local Target (AZ), I was able to purchase a Target GC with a Target GC

Yes – online you get a 5% discount too if you have a red card

This no longer works, no more %5 discount online if you use a Target GC as payment, and have your Target redcard attached to your account.

You still can buy a 3rd party GC with a Target GC online though, right?

Online – definitely no; the order will submit, but be followed shortly by a order cancellation email.

Most gift cards even list on the product page now ~ “can’t pay for with a gift card.”

I’ve heard mixed reports that in store it will go through, but I think cashiers aren’t suppose to allow it, so YMMV and you may was to research that more. Been several months since I heard fresh discussions on it.

Was this a recent change? I did it a week ago. Purchased a $26 item with a $50 gc at target.com – my redcard was attached and I got 5% off even though nothing was charged to the redcard.

it looks like many Target physical stores are coded “GROCERY STORES / SUPERMARKETS / BAKERIES – 5411”. Anyone have experience with online coding?

5411 looks fine on Amex Blue cash:
Only merchants who code their transactions as 5411 in MCC are eligible for 3% cashback for grocery/supermarket.
Only merchants who code their transactions as 5311 in MCC are eligible for 2% cashback for department store.

It’s very YMMV.

This only works with Visa/MC and only at certain locations. For instance I live between two towns that have largely the same Targets. One is categorized general merchandise/warehouse and other is grocery. I’ve scouted this out beforehand and you will have to do the same. But if your Target is grocery, it’s like your own little secret. Walmarts are often coded the same way.

Thanks for this. After researching, it’s much the same way in NorCal; there are different codings for different stores.

That would typically make it safer to buy these in store to ensure you get the cashback bonus. However, most stores seem to block gift card purchases with credit cards.

What to do…
