Amazon: Get up to 20% Off Various Items on Prime Day with Store Credit Card [Currently, Musical Instruments Extra 5% Off]

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (affiliate link)

Amazon is advertising a discount of up to 20% back on various items on Prime day for Amazon Prime Store cardholders. We don’t have specifics yet as to which items or categories will have the 20% discount.

There’s one deal already available:

  • Get 10% back on all musical instruments, provided that they are shipped and sold by Amazon.

It’s important to note two things:

  • The discount is actually 5% less than shown since the card always earns 5% back. For example, the music promotion is really just a 5% bonus on top of the standard 5% earnings for a total of 10%.
  • These special deals are on the Amazon Prime Store Card only from Synchrony Bank, not on the Amazon Prime Rewards card from Chase. We don’t yet know of any promotions on the Chase Amazon card, but last year there were offers on both of the versions, and it’s likely there will be some sort of promotional offer on the Chase version too.

The Fine Print

  • Offer expires 11:59 pm on July 11, 2017
  • Musical instrument offer: is valid through July 31
  • Offer only valid for Amazon Prime Store Cardmembers and authorized users of an Amazon Prime Store Card.
  • Items fully or partially paid by another payment form including but not limited to gift cards and rewards points may not receive the percentage back bonus
  • Offer may not be combined with any Special Financing or Equal Pay offer
  • Offer does not apply if you select a Special Financing or Equal Pay offer to apply during checkout.
  • Offer only applies to the portion of net qualifying purchases (purchases less returns and other credits) of eligible items paid for with an Amazon Prime Store Card at Amazon.com.
  • Offer does not apply to shipping charges, taxes or other fees associated with the purchase of an eligible product
  • Please allow up to two billing cycles for your statement credit to post to your Amazon Prime Store Card account

Our Verdict

The music deal could be a substantial discount for those in the market as instruments can be expensive. I believe that deal is valid for existing cardholders too, though it’s not 100% clear in the terms.

Main reason I’m posting about this is if someone is on the fence for the Amazon credit card it might be worth applying now rather than a different time. Hopefully, the card will come in time.

For heavy Amazon spenders, one of the two Amazon cards could make a lot of sense to be able to get 5% off all Amazon purchases with ease. There are, of course, other ways to get 5x on Amazon by purchasing gift cards at retailers who code as a bonus category.

We’ll add this Prime Card deal to our main Prime Day post.

About the Security Program. This is OPTIONAL, but if you’re in a hurry, you might just click the link that registers you for the program. Here is a screenshot of the application page: http://imgur.com/a/NcHtu
I’m glad I saw this post and avoided having to go back in and remove my card from the program.

Will – You can add this to the post if you seem it relevant. Synchrony registers you BY DEFAULT into their protection program that charges a fee of $1.66 for every $100 spent on Amazon Prime store card. Please remember to cancel this protection yourself by logging into mycardsecurity.com.

Personally I am not a big fan of such practices by finance and credit card companies.

Any chance you can take some screenshots of this for me (e.g where you cancel this) are you sure you didn’t opt in when you applied as well?

Will – you could be right there. I am not sure if I got a prompt on this and opted in or out. I tried applying again – but it shows I have an account and wont allow me to apply for it. Here is the link to the letter that came in. I was able to however go online, register and cancel this.

Here is the link to the image of the letter I had received after signing up for this card- https://imgur.com/a/4cCsn

Guitar Center routinely offers 15-20% off with mailing list coupons, and you can call in or go to the store to get similar discounts without a coupon. Depending on how they are doing against quota and how much you are buying the salespeople sometimes discount more aggressively. No Prime shipping but you can use whatever credit card you want.

Another Guitar Center tip is to buy their gift cards at Lowe’s when Amex Offers come up. 20% off gift cards plus 20% off coupons and things start getting reasonable. Given Guitar Center’s financials I would not hold too many of these long term though.
