Amazon now offers Prime with a monthly fee so you don’t have to pay the entire year upfront. Choose to pay $8.99 per month for video only or pay $10.99 per month for the full Prime package.
The $8.99 monthly option is for video only – and is perhaps partly symbolic – to put an emphasis on their video benefits and pit Amazon as a Netflix rival. The $10.99 monthly option is for all Prime benefits, mainly for free 2-day shipping with no minimum order amount, as well as a few other benefits like music streaming, ebooks, and some special Prime offerings (Prime Now, Prime Pantry, etc).
The standard price of Prime is $99 per year. If you pay $10.99 for 12 months, it will end up costing $131.88 for the year, so you don’t want to use the option if you are planning on keeping Prime. But it’s great for a trial period – if you need some time to decide after the initial free 30-day trial. It’s also convenient if you have lots of orders to make at one time in the year, you can just sign up for that month or two without having to pay for an entire year.
I think it’s a smart move on the part of Amazon to give people a monthly option. It’s also interesting to see them trying to compete with Netflix with the video-only option, although we all know that their goal is, ultimately, to convert you to the full Prime and shop more on Amazon.

Hey Chuck is this like Netflix where you get DVDs in the mail???
I want to dump Netflix but havent found anything comparable with both streaming and DVDs by mail.
I don’t know much about Prime video. I’ll defer to an expert.
Prime does not ship DVD’s, everything is streamed.
Thanks Chuck and Owen.
So does this streaming service provide new release DVDs.
If you are a secondary member on a shared prime membership (pre-2015 where you do not have access to prime video and do not have to share credit card info), does signing up for prime video monthly invalidate the shared prime membership?
Hmm, not sure how that will work.
