Amazon Prime Membership for Just $68 Starting Friday

We don’t have official confirmation yet, but it’s more or less clear that starting this Friday, Amazon will offer an annual Prime membership for just $68 instead of the regular $99.

Amazon Prime linky (this contains our affiliate link, we appreciate when you use our links)

This was first reported on aftvnews based on prior year’s experience that Amazon has offered a discount after winning Emmy awards. It’s also been confirmed by an Amazon rep to a Slickdeals member who was told the deal will last 3-5 days. I called up customer service and the rep didn’t want to commit to anything since it’s not official, but told me to be on the lookout for a deal.

The big question is whether they’ll offer this deal for existing Prime members and for Prime Gifting. They used to allow this, but the most recent time they only allowed new members and no gifts.

In any case, if you’re Prime membership is about to renew, it’s probably worth waiting a few days. Even if the fee already hit recently, you can still get a refund if you haven’t yet used any Prime benefits.

We’ll post the official link when it goes live.

This is the 2nd time Amazon has fooled me with this. When I originally signed up it was even announced on our local news that Amazon was offering prime membership for $79. I signed up but was charged the full rate. This time my membership was set to expire so I let it but was never able to find the discount. I haven’t renewed though, I see another poster has discovered what I have, just about every place offers some form of free or reduced shipping.

Where did this rumor start anyway?

As doc posted, with atv news first ran with it….. though now they’re claiming that they never suggested they had any insider confirmation, just reasons speculation of past pattern repeating itself. Lame, but almost plausible.

Of course, then we get various sites — including this one — adding that they had hints of confirmation from various insiders or reps….

Note doubt after Chuck tells us its “more or less clear” (that it’s going to happen), then the rumor goes “viral” — dozens of bloggers picking it up — with lots and lots of hyper-ventilating Dabush MMS style under-statement… posts. (!!!! — OMG, and all that)

Well, I tried the decaf this morning…. still don’t like it. 😉

Let’s hope Amazon sees the logic in making the rumor reality…. Then again, they hypsters for American Express kept pushing the logic that surely, but surely AMEX wouldn’t kill the golden goose of Small Business Saturdays….. but they did anyway, even as they had certain blogger shills still promoting the ensuing proverbial lipstick on the pig….

BIG FOOTNOTE: Chuck, when I follow your links to the Amazon Prime deal page, the only thing I’m seeing is a promo for $10.99 a month “deal”….. which would be a whopping INCREASE from $99 a year to $132….. Maybe that’s the deal your source was aware of…. (which will be the old Kraft two-step misdirection play…. e.g., raise the price, lower what you get, AND then tell the sheeple that “for a limited time”, you can get a discount off the newly increased price! (and get the blogosphere to pass along your “quick deals — without analysis”)…. What a game!

By golly, tis

self correction — I see that when I click on the sub-link to the link, they do still have the $99 annual rate….

and come to think of it, that’s still a bad deal…. I’ve been off Prime caffeine for two months now, and so like the deals and free shipping promos I’m discovering elsewhere…. Even from Walmart, Sears, and (gasp) ebay….

hmmmmm…. I could get used to this. Bring on the decaf .

Went to Amazon and didn’t see anything on the promotion. Are you going to update if it actually occurs?

Does Amazon prorate membership? I also got prime for $99 about 2 months ago. If they do cancel and pro-rate membership, i would try and save a few $$

I just renewed my Prime membership for full price a few weeks ago. Could I just cancel mine and get a prorated refund (more than $68), then renew at $68?

No, you’re entitled to a full refund if nothing has been shipped since renewal but once a shipment happens then your only option is disable the auto-renewal (even if the button is called end membership), no refund is provided.

For the January promo, I canceled my Mom’s membership and signed myself up. I had to make a special effort today, but I killed the auto-renewal of my next January Prime on the gamble they will do this again in January.
