Amazon Unveils the Dash Button for Faster Ordering

Amazon launched today a new, faster way of ordering by clicking a single button to order certain household items. Upon noticing that your detergent is low, for instance, you’ll just press a button on a little device which is attached to your washing machine and Amazon will ship it to you.

Similar to the website 1-click setting in your Amazon account, the Dash button will bypass the computer entirely by placing the order directly from strategically placed buttons throughout the house. The device comes with an adhesive which can be stuck to the washing machine, bathroom mirror or anywhere else.

The company is offering the buttons for free to Prime members, up to 3 button-devices per person. This offer is by invitation only and Amazon will only be sending out the buttons to those Prime members whose order history reveals constant ordering of certain eligible products.

The current list of eligible items has 254 products including things like diapers, detergent and garbage bags. See the full list here. Request an invitation here. Terms and conditions here.

I’m not a main Prime member but I am a secondary Prime member and I was able to request an invitation.

I haven’t heard back from Amazon and I don’t think I will since my past orders haven’t been any repeat-purchases of these items.

Personally, I don’t like the whole idea. Most people would probably prefer placing orders normally and not with the push of a button. The idea is obviously for people who are anyway ordering the same products again-and-again, but it still seems overblown to me. Many commented in jest that this is an early April Fools joke.

Amazon already had previously a Dash device in which you say or scan items to add them to your shopping list. Amazon continues to try increasing their presence into people’s daily lives.
