American Airlines Store Credit Card Review

American Airlines offers a store credit card that can only be used for American Airlines purchases.  Like the other American Airlines credit card this card is issued by Citibank.

Here are the card benefits:

  • No annual fee (including authorized users)
  • No interest on purchases of $150 or more if paid in full within 6 months (still must make minimum payments)
  • 26.24% APR
  • 29.99% APR for cash advances, with a $100 cash advance limit
  • No rewards program
  • Can only make purchases with American Airlines

This card is pretty lackluster when you compare it to the other American Airline cards that Citi offers: Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select, MasterCard, Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite MasterCard & CitiBusiness  AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard. The thing to remember is that this card isn’t trying to compete with those and other airline cards. This is a store card designed for people with bad credit.

That being said I wouldn’t recommend this card for people with bad credit, unless they fly with American Airlines often and can make the most out of the no interest if paid in full within six months aspect of this card. People with bad credit can always use the shopping cart trick t get approved for other store credit cards without a hard pull, or sign up for the Discover it Secured card (easily best secured card on the market).

This is a rarity. I’ve worked in sales for American Airlines, US Airways, Northwest Airlines, and Delta. AA is the only one with a store card, and it likely comes from the days before the Citibank AAdvantage Visa, which I believe came out in the early 80s. I’m not sure what the advantage was to keeping this one, but I would imagine it has something to do with an incentive from Citibank. The other airlines used other banks for theirs, so that’s why this likely has something to do with Citi. It’s also smart since card members with the AA card can more easily apply for the AAdvantage cards from the Citi website and manage both at the same time. No need to go to Barclays.

Which card would you then recommend that would give you 6 months no interest in the purchase of airline tickets?

Think you meant to say “is not competing” …or maybe you didn’t haha.
