Our Verdict

American Express only allows you to earn the sign up bonus on their cards once, this card has had a sign up bonus of 75,000 Membership Rewards points in the past so I’d recommend waiting for that offer. If you do sign up for this card, remember to enroll it in the OPEN savings program.

It’s also important to remember that this card requires you to spend $5,000 within three months of account opening, some people might find this difficult. We’d recommend reading our manufactured spending overview or our post on meeting minimum spend requirements to see how you could increase your credit card spending without actually purchasing items you don’t need.

I’d also recommend that you consider the American Express Business Platinum card, it’s possible to currently get a sign up bonus of 100,000 MR points when you spend $10,000 within three months of account opening with a simple phone call. If you don’t have a business (and even something as basic as selling items on eBay or Amazon can be considered a business) then you can get a similar 50,000 point offer on the personal version of Premier gold card by checking your special offers with American Express.

This card is really only worth getting for the sign up bonus, I wouldn’t recommend it for long term use. There are better options for almost all the categories that this card earns at an increased rate at.

I’m not going to sign up for this 50,000 offer as I’m going to wait it out and hopefully get a 75,000 offer. If you do apply and don’t get instantly approved then make sure you call the American Express reconsideration number. Also keep in mind you’re not eligible for this offer if you’ve receive any other business sign up promotion from AmEx in the last 12 months.

I applied for this card at 12:41am eastern time on 7/31, had the application put on pending, and then was approved the next day after calling in. How likely is it that they would have given me only the standard 25,000 point bonus?
