Our Verdict

You can only get the sign up bonus on each American Express card once per lifetime now and they’ve been known to send out targeted offers for $300 & $500 for this card. I’d recommend trying to wait for one of those offers instead. The Plus version of this card will also be available sometime in spring of 2016, fingers crossed it launches with a nice fat sign up bonuses.

If you’re going to apply for this card, make sure you read these things about American Express cards first.

I have had this card for many years. One of my Amex offers under this card was to sign up for the SimplyCashPlus card. The benefits are almost exactly the same except it is a hybrid charge/credit card from what I can tell (you can go over credit limit). Also, instead of a $25,000 limit on some bonus categories, there is a $50,000 limit. The signup bonus is $300 for $3000 spending in three months and $500 for $5000 spending in three months (looks like it is paid in increments, $300, then $200). I chatted to make sure Amex considers this a separate product (they do) and then took the plunge.
