Our Verdict
This offer comes up often and it can be a great deal since you’d be getting 5% off, plus the regular credit card rewards as well. The biggest problem here is that Amex gift cards come with fees attached. Let’s take a look:
Shipping fee of $8.95, but if you have the premium shipping plan with Amex, the shipping is free. And you can get a 90-day free trial.- Purchase fee of $3.95, but you can use a promo code to try getting this fee waived; these codes come and go. 1) Until the end of October you can use code: PFWED to waive the purchase fee. 2) Until 2/28/16 you can use code: EMSVCA. (HT: deelighted) 3) On business gift cards, until 12/20/15 you can use code: OCTPNL. (HT: Aahz) We’ll try to update this page with other codes as they become available. Please let us know if you see any codes.
If you can get the cards completely fee-free then you’ll be netting the $10 offer credit, or 5%, by purchasing $200 Amex gift cards with each of your registered Amex cards. They can also make a great gift for the upcoming holiday season.
Bear in mind, however, that you may be losing by paying with your registered Amex card versus paying with a credit card that earns higher rewards. For example, if you buy a $200 Amex gift cards on the Amex Blue Cash card you’re only getting back 1% in rewards, versus the 2% you could have earned on that spend by using a 2% card. In the end, you’re only gaining $8 per offer, not $10.
If you don’t have the free shipping plan, choose the personalized gift card option and you’ll be able to order a gift card in the amount of $198 which will be eligible for the cheaper $2 shipping fee.

In my confirmation email:
Enter Code EMSVCA upon checkout to receive 100% off the purchase fee on every order through 02/28/2016
Thanks, added
I signed in with my Amex costco to get the free trial shipment but used amex fidelity as method of payment. Do you think if I log in with amex costco again and this time pay with costco will I get $10 credit for the second time?
Shipping fee is only $2 if the card value is <$200. $199 works.
This code has been around for awhile and is still valid:
"Enter Code EMSVCA upon checkout to receive 100% off the purchase fee on every order through 02/28/2016"
But the minimum is $200 to receive the $10. If you buy a $199 card, do you just buy 2? Just trying to figure out how this tip helps for this deal. Thanks.
Thanks Red, I added these points. I would have HTed you but I added before I read your comment.
Sorry I am new to Amex gc. Personalized or regular gc which one is better to buy and has less shipping and purchase fees?
Same, personalized has your name. If you don’t have the free shipping plan, buy $198 personalized gift card and get the $2 shipping fee option.
I have minimum spend to meet on platinum, would this qualify for this.
I think so.
If you’ve already used a free shipping trial, you get one free shipping trial per Amex login. So if you have AU cards on separate logins, you can get more free trials this way.
Nice tip
Thanks @Fiby! I unlinked an AU card of mine and created new Amex login. Went in to order AGCs and was able to do new 90 day free shipping. Used that login for all my Amex cards that previously had free shipping trial period used.
Wait you can unlink cards from your login? Didn’t know that! How do you do that?
And you’re welcome!
Profile -> Card Management -> Card Management Tasks -> Remove Card from Online Management. Then register your card again for online login as if you just received the card in the mail.
As for CB through a portal, both BeFrugal and TopCashBack are giving 1.5% and have about the same exact language. I’m going through TCB: “Please note: Business Gift Cards, Business Customized Gift Cards, Consumer Gift Cards, or Consumer Personalized Gift Cards over $200.00 are not eligible for cash back. (Only Gift Cards with $25, $50, $100, $200 denominations or a variable load of $200 or less are eligible for cash back.)”
So, buying $1k worth of AGC will likely get $15 CB from TCB?
From an email I received from AMEX yesterday-
SAVE ON GIFT CARDS
SHOW YOU CARE
Reward hard-working employees, trusted vendors, valued clients, and other business associates with an American Express Business Gift Card. Order online with promotional code OCTPNL to receive 100% off purchase fees. Offer expires 12/20/2015.
Thanks, I’ll add that in.
$200 cards just aren’t worth the hassle. I’m hanging into these offers until the end to see if portal rates return for higher denom cards (even $500s).
I did this offer in July. Earned $10/card and also got payout from portal even though using a purchase fee promo code. So actually earned about 6-7%. ESVCA promo is working again too.
which portal?
Sorry, meant EMSVCA as the promo code but I see others below have mentioned that as well. I used TCB. Currently I have 7 pending $3 payouts (@1.5%, I missed the 2.25% day). I previously used the portal only because that was the only way I knew how to get to AGC link, ha! Doesn’t hurt to try the portal again. Hopefully still get the payout. The recent T&C change spoke only to denomination change, the promo fee restriction was there this summer and still now.
As an update, I did receive payout from TopCashBack for Amex GCs purchased with Amex GC amex offer. Promo code did not cancel out the cash back.
Likewise. I just cashed it out. I was pretty surprised that I got cashback despite the coupon code.
