Is Opening A Bank Account A Soft Or Hard Pull?

That depends on who the bank account is with. Most banks will simply do a soft pull on your credit report (this doesn’t affect your credit score at all), but some banks (especially those who offer a line of credit, such as overdraft protection) will do a hard pull on your credit file. Below we’ve listed banks and whether they do a hard or soft pull, along with the source of this information. If you have another data point, please let us know in the comments.

Capital One 360

  • Capital one will do a hard credit pull for a checking account only if you opt for overdraft protection. As long as you opt out there will only be a soft pull. Their savings account only has a soft pull done. This is also answered on their website which can be found by clicking here.

I just wanted to express my thanks for all the information. I actually need a mentor and would consider a fee-based arrangement. Having said that, I posted here because I opened and funded a recent PenFed account with a $1K (Arrival) CC deposit. While I know this is limited info to many, I had a pleasant experience.

  2. Mike says:

First Citizens Bank is quiet possibly the worst bank I’ve dealt with. Hard pull to open a checking account and $1 charge each time for the privilege of calling their toll-free number after 3 times per billing cycle. Also, lots of other fees for stupid things which they do not bother disclosing or listing on their website or elsewhere. Avoid this bank like the plague!

  3. Jason says:

Data point: As of 01/2015, bank of America is still soft pull on Experian. Also Chexsystem told by banker

  4. Andrew C says:

FYI, US Bank required a pull on IDA to open a savings account – had to unfreeze it.

  5. Phil says:

US bank was a HARD pull on innovis for checking account that was processed thru sagestream/IDA apparently as it says sagestream,llc/US BANK on my innovis report under requests others can see.

Does Chex combine inquiries from the same bank? For example, if I apply for and am approved for a US Bank checking, savings, and CD all in the same day, will Chex count that as one inquiry?

I’m trying to aggressively use bank account initial deposit funding to meet min. spending on different cards, so I want to reduce my Chex inquiries.

US Bank did a hard pull for me in Jan 2015 (shows up on my equifax as a hard pull). That was after the banker assured me it would be a soft pull. Next time, I’m going to get it in writing.

NOTE: They also soft pulled TU. I can’t speak for experian as I haven’t checked it yet.

I keep my credit frozen and will temporarily thaw all 3 bureaus when I apply for a new card. I am looking at opening a new checking account (Regions Bank), and I understand that it will only result in a soft pull to my credit. Can banks perform a soft pull with my credit frozen? I hope so as I don’t want to take a chance on a hard pull. Thanks!

    Pulled Chex report?
    Discover Bank – yes
    Citibank – yes
    Citizens – yes
    M&T – yes
Consumers Credit Union – yes, and a TU hard pull.
    Santander – yes
    PNC – yes
    BofA – no
Fidelity cash management account – no
Chase – no. But I have my mortgage and a couple CCs with them.
    TD Bank – no
    GoBank – no

    • Chuck says:

Interesting stuff. I’d guess TD and BoA did a soft pull then.

I was just rejected for a checking account chexsystems bounced me for 9 inquiries, but no negative information. How long will it be before this non-negative information is removed from my report? Is it the same 5 years as for negative information?

      • Ryan says:

The INQs stay on Chex for 2 years. After 6 months to a year, most banks will ignore them, but some are more picky than others. Applying for a lot of bank accounts in a short period of time can look risky or suspicious to the banks, same as with credit cards. I got denied for a credit union membership (savings only) because I had 3-4 Chex INQs TOTAL. They were extremely sensitive.

Just got a hard pull in Equifax for adding as joint holder in checking and savings account in Alliant Credit Union. However, when open a new membership, there is no hard pull.

    • anthonyjh21 says:

Thanks for this piece of information. I just sent them an email myself to clarify this (before I saw your post). I donated the $10 and went to sign up and noticed that any joint holder would have a hard pull.

Definitely irritated because one main reason I was going to test them as a primary checking is because of no hard pull. Well, it’s not worth a hard pull for this account, let alone from Equifax. I guess I’ll be looking at LMCU more closely if I’m going to be dinged anyways, might as well be with Transunion.

Without knowing the full details it feels like a bait and switch. Why logically would they do a soft pull for 1 person but a hard pull for second?

    • anthonyjh21 says:

Oh also, when you added a joint holder, did they do a HP on both of you or just the joint holder?

      • Alan says:

        just the new joint holder

        • anthonyjh21 says:

          Ha, better late than never.

I opened the joint account in April via snail mail, which prevented any hard pulls to either of us. You have to submit more information this way (copies of bills, ID) but IMO this is way to go if you’re wanting a joint account.

Have been nothing short of thrilled with my experiences with Alliant. Only wish I switched faster. This is saying something considering I was with Ally Bank previously, one with competitive rates, no fees and transfer system.

  43. Well, it is good to know which banks will pull what out of your credit report. I’d assume that the bank would do a soft pull for everyone and then a hard pull for those that might have a bigger credit history. For me, I’d assume they would do a soft one since I don’t have that much history.

I opened a basic checking account with Navy Federal Credit Union, and they told me it was going to be a soft pull. Upon checking my TransUnion report just now, turns out it was a hard pull. I’m pissed.

    • Dan says:

To add to my comment above, I did NOT tell them I wanted overdraft protection (rookie move I made last year at a different financial institution) and I don’t have any credit cards or loans with them. So there was absolutely no reason for them to do a hard pull. I’m going to talk to the branch manager this week and tell them they are misinforming their clients saying they only do soft pulls for basic checking accounts.

As another data point, they DO accept credit card funding, but they don’t accept American Express or Discover and both my Visa and MasterCard were declined because I have my cash advance limits set to zero. So they must code as cash advances.

Helped relative open BBVA Checking/Savings Account August-September 2016. Hard TU pull which during the account opening process, they offered 1000 overdraft LOC presumably based on this hard pull. Accepted and that was that.

Fast forward to 2 days ago, applied in same manner for BBVA Checking/Savings, hoping to duplicate same from last year. 752 EQ FICO, Karma FAKO 800TU-806EQ, AAoA 13 years. No derogs. Credit Accounts with CL 20k+.

Anyway, approved for accounts. Initial Deposit via CC. Didn’t get the offer for 1k overdraft LOC – which I was floored. So, I’m pissed thinking I blew an inquiry (Only have 2 inq on TU) for nothing. Well, I’ve been waiting to get that notification of a TU pull, but nothing from Karma, WalletHub, and I manually checked TU via dispute process and confirm no HP on TU. I do see the entry under SP, though.

Not sure if this is a fluke or an actual change in policy from August/September 2016 to present. Anyway, thought I would add that Data Point since it appears as though BBVA Account Opening might not strictly be a HP.

  110. Ryan says:

I’ve been researching some CUs recently, and joined a couple, so here are the DPs I’ve gathered:

    Personal experience:
UNFCU: Chex for sure. Got denied for too many Chex INQs (had maybe 4-5 total) for a savings account. Did not see a SP anywhere, and definitely no HP.

Consumers CU: As mentioned above, Chex + EQ SP (identity validation) + TU HP. TU HP can be reused for I think 30 days for other credit products. I used mine for the Cash Rewards card. Probably to be safe you should call or chat with them to do that though and NOT apply online. Many online systems automatically do a HP even if they have a fresh copy. Ran into that with SDFCU a few years ago.

US Bank – Soft (TU I think) pull for savings + Checking, don’t know about Chex. Sagestream/ARS/EWS all frozen. Offered OD LOC and accepted = immediate TU HP. They have a pretty cool program called “Because You’ve Earned It” which gets you a fee-free Gold checking account if your credit is good.

Alliant – SP on EQ + Chex

Unify FCU – SP + Chex

BMOHarris – Chex for sure, probably a SP somewhere, too

Chase – Not sure, I had CCs with them, so it’s hard to tell the SPs apart. Don’t recall seeing a Chex for them. Maybe being a customer in good standing bypasses some of that?

Email/Chat with CSRs: (no personal experience)
McGraw-Hill FCU: SP on Experian for membership, only HP for credit products. Pull can be reused for 30 days.

    Patelco: SP, uses EXP

Hanscom FCU: EXP. Their response just said “As part of an application for any HFCU, credit is pulled.” (That’s a cut-and-paste) I take that to mean HP to join. Did not respond to if they reuse. Said “best credit score” is 730 or higher, but I think that’s FICO 2 from what I saw on myfico.

    NWFCU: SP on Experian.

InFirst FCU: HP on EXP. Will “probably” reuse up to 60 days.

Stanford FCU: SP on EXP. Comment above mentions INQ sensitive.

Still waiting for a couple of others to respond.
