First Horizon has hoops to jump through not mentioned above:

“A small boost to your finances can keep you moving forward. Here’s how
you can easily add $450 to your new FirstView Checking account. To
qualify, you must be a new client. If you maintain an average daily
collected balance of $5,000 in your total deposit balance and make a
minimum of 10 qualifying client-initiated transactions for each
statement cycle for the first three full statement cycles, we’ll drop a
$450 cash bonus into your account.”

It’s a little odd that you used the word “hoops” to describe “requirements”. Almost every bank bonus has some kind of requirements to meet. I feel that those requirements are very fair for $450.

I rarely make 30 transactions on a checking account in a year.

Any reason making a $.01 transfer 10 times each month wouldn’t qualify?

Risking a shutdown and loss of a $450 bonus to avoid 50 cents in missing CC rewards or HYSA interest is pennywise and pound foolish…. But it can be done.

There is the PayPal subscription trick, championed by Mothy…

My water utility bill accepts 1 cent payments, but I haven’t exploited it (much).

That particular bonus offer allows for bill pay, checks, and ACH transactions, too. Super easy.

Aw yeah, the Mothy subscription… I thought about that, and have it bookmarked, but have never used it. My utility has a $3 minimum. AT&T internet has a $1 minimum. I know that some folks can get Amazon reloads for 50-cents (or if not that, then $1). I’m pretty much all about buying bananas, one at a time, at Walmart or any grocery with a self-checkout. One banana is around 21 cents depending upon the size of your banana. 😉

Haven’t started First Horizon and may miss out on that one. Too many irons in too many fires.

Forgot to include: my health insurance allows $1 payments. Have not tried less than $1.

Your strategy of buying bananas is sound. However, that doesn’t work with the current CFCU offer that I am working on that requires 30 $10+ debit purchases. Hopefully other FI don’t wise up like CFCU did.

If ever forced to do $10 charges I would probably look to the gas pump. Sadly that’s less than 3 gallons currently. Pretty sure anybody who has car insurance is paying at least $50-$100 a month too. Insurance companies love getting money and will take it any way they can get it, so multiple smaller payments are usually okay. Same thing with entertainment sources like cable/internet/streaming.

I’m somewhere in the middle, or bounce around. Anyway, I have faith you can do it.

No banana jokes. We only accept serious comments in these parts. I hear Target sells bananas at a flat rate of 25 cents… I’ve never tried.

mangorunner,

The only time that I do 1 cent transfers is to keep my accounts active every month, 6 months, etc.

If I were to do this specific offer, I would probably do transfers of $1+ to meet the requirements.

Based on the commentary below, it seems that you are referring to debit purchases and not just transfers. Private quoted “10 qualifying client-initiated transactions for each” but did not quote the part of the terms that defines what “qualifying” is.

Even though, I have made several comments in the First Horizon post, I have not reviewed the terms of the offer. I don’t usually do that until I am seriously considering applying for an offer.

Do the terms exclude ACH transfers as “qualifying client-initiated transactions” for that offer? If so, I would definitely not recommend doing $.01 debit purchases to try to meet the terms. Just ask mothman69 how that worked out with the NASA offer.

Eric 🔗, I got tripped up with thinking you were referring to debit card purchases even though you did say transfers. Thank you for the clarification.

I haven’t read the terms of that offer, either. I’ve been reading many of the comments but haven’t actually applied for the account.

Don’t do the CitiBank one if you need your money, I deposited my check and they held it for 8 days, then when I tried to transfer it out so I could pay my bills they marked me as fraud. Their customer service is a nightmare. Not worth the $300, just an absolute headache.

Does Chase have a way of monitoring or some way of automatically declining your bonus if you had already received a promotion within 2 years? I think I got one 8/2022 so I won’t be technically eligible until the end of the year, but curious if anyone has tried anyway and received it.

You will normally get a message when trying to open the account that you aren’t eligible for the bonus.

This used to be true, but recently I noticed the Chase site no longer does this, or at least not for me. I know I am not eligible yet, but it did not warn me that I am not eligible. It used to state that the person has completed a similar offer and then asked if you wanted to proceed without the promotional code.

I did not proceed because I believe it would be a waste of time and effort. Snowbird Josh
