BP Rewards Changes Coming

Current Rewards Program

BP Rewards program has been around for a little over a year and was detailed on DoC by Josh from Frugalhack.me along with every other gas program under the sun here.

The basics of the current program are as follows:

  • Sign-up Bonus: $0.10 off per gallon when you register.
  • Everyday Bonus: None
  • How to Earn:
    • Fuel Purchase – $0.05 off per gallon for every 20 gallons purchased. There is a minimum of two transactions that must total 20 gallons.
  • Gallon Limit: 20 gallons
  • Rewards Expiration: 90 days to redeem rewards

Rewards Changes

Changes are coming to the rewards program are coming on May 18th, 2015 the details can be found here and detailed below:

  • There will now be 2 different bonuses that can be earned:
    • Everyday Bonus: None
    • How to Earn each bonus:
      • Recurring Bonus – $0.10 off per gallon after every $100 of gas purchased.
      • Ultimate Status Bonus – $0.15 off per gallon after spending $300 in a calendar year.
        • ONLY 1 Ultimate status reward can be earned per calendar year
        • Exclusive promotions – No details provided
    • Restrictions:
      • Gallon Limit: 20 gallons
      • Rewards Expiration: 365 days to redeem rewards

Verdict

My personal opinion is this change helps simplify the program without downgrading the program at all. We no longer need to count gallons in order to receive a discount.  The added second bonus of $0.15 off per gallon is a great way to keep loyalty to the program in addition to the exclusive promotions mentioned.

In regard to the Exclusive promotions, I have received gas rewards bonuses after not using my rewards card for a certain amount of time. They also had a Amazon gift card promotion when the program was first introduced. Hopefully they expand on these and offer more promotions for loyal customers.

In order to maximize the rewards I would suggest having multiple rewards account for each person in your household if you frequent BP. This would help in hitting the $300 per calendar year $0.15 off per gallon bonus on multiple accounts.

Tip: You do not need to have your BP Rewards card on you, the phone number associated with the account can be entered at the terminal. This is even possible in NJ where we don’t pump our own gas.

Don’t forget to use you most rewarding gas credit card when filling up. Our most updated list of best Gas credit cards can be found here.

The reward is a now a way for BP to make more money from their loyal customers. It used to give drivers some form of savings but they recently changed their price difference between gas grades. This price difference seems to off set the average savings per gallon as well as charging drivers more per gallon.

For example:
Back in the days without rewards. Difference between each grade is $0.12 per gallon
87 = $2.50 per gallon
89 = $2.62 per gallon
93 = $2.74 per gallon

When rewards started with an average of saving of $0.05 per gallon. Difference between each grade was still $0.12 per gallon. SAVINGS!!!!
87 = $2.45 per gallon ($2.50 – $0.05)
89 = $2.57 per gallon ($2.62 – $0.05)
93 = $2.69 per gallon ($2.74 – $0.05)

With the latest price between fuel grades of $0.18 per gallon and the average savings of $0.05 per gallon. ABSOLUTELY NO SAVINGS BUT PAYING MORE PER GALLON!!!!
87 = $2.58 per gallon ($2.63 – $0.05)
89 = $2.76 per gallon ($2.81 – $0.05)
93 = $2.94 per gallon ($2.99 – $0.05)

As we can see, drivers are clearly paying more per gallon of gas with the new price difference between these 3 grades! As a matter of fact, drivers are paying more before rewards were in place!

It was a rewards program to begin with but now that people are brained washed. The new price difference between grades more than off sets the rewards and drivers are now paying more per gallon!

just filled up with 14 gallons at the Abbotsford wis. station have a rewards card. Asked the clerk if she knew how to do the transaction she said no, not very friendly her name was (Zari or Zara) this is the 3rd time that i lost out on my rewards. whats up with that. why have a card if the attendant does’t know how to do the transaction. every little bit helps to save some money we are on ss. so looking to save some. getting tired of unfriendly people. maybe need to go some where else for my gas.

Do you know if the double rewards on the 22nd of the month has been discontinued? I’m a faithful BP customer and would always wait to cash in my rewards till the 22nd. But yesterday my rewards weren’t doubled.

I don’t think you will, but contact Synchrony directly (or BP) to confirm. Let us know what the results are. Would be incredible value if they do continue this…

Hmm. I dont see any mention of a signup bonus ($.10) like the existing program. I sign up with a new BP Driver Rewards card (with fake email addy) before each trip to the pump. Couple that with $10 off a $50 BP gift card at Lowes via several sync’d Amex cards…

Thanks mileswhip. Good to know. I work in NJ during the weekdays and prefer BP.

Yep. No go at my Lowe’s. They don’t even have Shell gift cards. I think I saw some Gulf cards.

My local Staples mainly sells Exxon/Mobil gift cards and I use my Ink card. What’s OBC? I only have the Sallie Mae card (5% for $250 every month, but I use it for groceries) and AMEX Blue Cash which is 3%.

Unless I’m misreading this, I think you need the BP rewards card in NJ. See double asterisk on the website:

“Excluding participating BP stations in NJ.”

Wish there are more stores that have deals on BP gift cards or have 5% on credit card spend.

I live in NJ and can confirm you do not need your card at the pump but you need to let the attendant know your phone number or put it in yourself.

Have you tried Lowe’s for BP gift cards? Buying it with the amex sync offer would give you 20% off gas. Also I have seem BP cards at Staples and local grocery stores. Those would both couple with 5% cards depending on what is in your wallet (INK, OBC)

Is the $.15 per gallon exclusive bonus a one-time deal, or do you get that for every subsequent fill-up for the year? If the latter, it’s a pretty good incentive to make BP your primary gas station. Otherwise pretty meh.

It is once per year per account. So I advise having multiple accounts for each member of your household to hit the bonus in each.
