Amazon has two co-branded cards currently available:
- Store card issued by Synchrony Bank
- Visa card issuer by Chase
Normally a true credit card (like the one issued by Chase) will have a better rewards program than the store card. That isn’t the case currently with Amazon, the Synchrony Bank card earns 5% cash back on all Amazon purchases (for prime users) and the Chase Visa card only earns 3% cash back.
Reddit user zttz has reported seeing the following banner (note Visa in the corner):
It looks like Chase plan to increase the cash back rate on their Visa card and Amazon have accidentally leaked some of the creatives early. It’s likely that if Chase does add 5% on Amazon.com purchases it’ll also be limited to prime members only (it says when you use your new Amazon Prime Rewards Visa). Amazon & Chase renewed their credit card agreement in February of last year & this is a key card portfolio for Chase. This will make the Chase Amazon Visa one of the best cards for Amazon purchases, I personally still won’t sign up as the bonus is usually low and I just stock up on Amazon giftcards when one of the 5% rotating cards offer 5% back at Amazon.
Is everyone seeing this banner at Amazon or at Chase?
Amazon
Thanks for the update! That would be great if Chase Amazon Visa offers 5%! I do quite a bit of MS’ing on the Store Card now that JetBlue offers 3x JetBlue (have yet to see any track/post yet so we shall see) but I’m limited to the credit limit of the store card which is not very high. I got 3 Store cards (3 different names) so I can maximize each month. With Chase, I can move my CL around so it’ll practically be free/unlimited JetBlue miles!
I wonder if they’ll convert current cardholders or if it’s only for new ones.
Strangely, or confirming that Chase is here to stay, my Chase Amazon Business Visa (no longer available for applications) was recently reissued. Right now I’m a household member for Prime, so if these changes happen I’ll have to sign up. Hopefully the changes will occur at a time when the existing Prime membership is set to expire. (Household members of a Prime member get Prime benefits, but not the 5% on the store card)
Prime household members get the 5% cb. It’s in the T&C.
I only have the Chase version and I saw a similar banner today. I clicked on it, and it went to a page that said my Amazon card has now been set to the default payment method and showed 5% back…?
I just checked my Amazon wallet, and it still shows 3% back 🙁
The Synchrony card only offers 5% for Prime members.
Made this clearer
The branding makes it sound like it would only be available to Amazon Prime subscribers, or perhaps function similarly to the Costco card.
That said, nothing interesting here unless they ever make the impossible decision to tie it to the UR program and make the CB convertible/transferable to UR, which would free up important 5x capacity on my Inks 🙂
Good point, added this to the post.
If it gets tied to UR, possibility of 5/24….I’m assuming this Amazon VISA is outside of 5/24…
I have both. But if Chase Amazon gets you 5% on Amazon and therefore I can move the UR points to my CSR… you know which one I’ll be using 🙂
Amazon doesn’t earn UR
I think you should clarify that the Synchrony card only offers 5% for Prime users. Otherwise there will be a lot of disappointed readers…
Done 🙂
is that for primary account prime holders only or those who have shared membership also? i’m assuming it’s for share membership also since i’m under someone’s account and i see the store card 5% offer all the time.
I really really want to get rid of my Amazon visa but it’s my oldest card.
Same. Although I wouldn’t mind the extra 5x on Amazon year round if possible.
I don’t see why would anyone want to get rid of a no AF card. Also I think if you close a card, it doesn’t affect your AAoA because the account keeps aging, but I am not sure about that.
As long as the CRA keeps the closed card on file, it counts toward the AAoA. Last several month or so, TU dropped a card closed on 1996. On EQ, it’s still there.
