Chase Limits ‘Dining’ Category on Sapphire Cards to Exclude Catering, Bakery, & Dairy

Via Dansdeals, bakeries, caterers, and dairy shops will no longer earn 3x with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. The 3x Dining category is now limited to restaurants, fast food, coffee shops, and bars.

This was confirmed in a secure message with a Chase supervisor, and others vouch for caterers no longer earning 3x as well:

…as of 8/30/2016 transactions billed as Bakeries, Caterers, & Dairy product stores will no longer qualify as accelerated rewards earnings. This is for all Chase products to remain fair and consistent.

Apparently, the Sapphire Preferred card also won’t earn 2x points on these purchases, as Chase wrote that the change was to keep it consistent with all Chase products. Let us know if you have a recent data point on the Sapphire Preferred.

Catering is a big limit since people and businesses often have large bills there. Bakery is a pretty common expense. And dairy probably excludes things like ice cream shops and the like.

This was done to prevent rewards abuse from enterprising minds.

YMMV. Byrne Dairy in upstate NY codes as gas station at pump, or convenience store. Krispy Kreme codes as restaurant, not bakery.

Yeah at least we benefit from it right away. If too many benefits get axed we will just go back to the CSP after the 1st year.

I have a feeling this is going to lead to a lot of confusion and people made on the fringes of this rule change if they realize they are not getting the points they thought they would. I just went through the Visa Supplier Locator page (https://www.visa.com/supplierlocator/search/index.jsp#) in my area to see how it would affect me (codes 5811,5451, 5462) and yes there are some big catering companies on there but most of the places that fall under catering are corporate/university cafe locations that sub-contract out and are no different than any other little lunch spot you would go to for a quick bite. On the bakery side, there are a couple grocery store/bakery combos but there are also several “donut shops” that probably make more money on coffee than anything these days. So I don’t get how that would be any different than getting 3x at a Starbucks or the like. Alas, there are no dairy shops (looked up a specific ice cream store and it was coded as a restaurant).

Ckecked these codes in my area and found that Krispy Kreme, Marble Slab Creamery and Foosackly’s Online will be excluded. Donuts, ice cream cones and chicken fingers get the ax from Chase.

Hoping Panera catering still counts as dining, I was about to put a grand on my CSR for business events next week!

Maybe try doing a test purchase to see how it posts?

Confirmed, Panera catering still coded as a restaurant, still got the 3x pts on my CSR!

Had a feeling this was the case a week ago. Used CSP at donut shop and another bakery and neither doubled when in the past at these same businesses they did.

Sounds like they have a bitter lactose-intolerant gluten-free rewards exec who’s mad that caterers won’t accommodate his/her dietary requirements.

I think those categories just have the potential for massive orders (especially when it comes to weddings) and that’s why they’ve been limited.

Lol, every wedding planner in the country probably started drooling over 3x on catering and rushed to get the card.
