Discover has sent the following e-mail out to cardholders (although not all cardholders have received this e-mail, the changes are effective for everybody):
Basically on August 1st, 2015 all Discover cards (e.g Discover it, Discover it Secured & Discover it Miles) will no longer have the following benefits:
Personally I don’t really use any of these benefits so it’s no big loss for me (you still have to pay $69.95 for the roadside assistance), but for others who do this might change what charges people decide to put on their cards (the full cost of the common carrier ticket must be charged to your Discover card for the Baggage Delay Insurance for example).
If this is the trade off for the Discover Double Cash promotion, I’m completely OK with it and hope more card issuers follow the same direction.
Update: Discover’s official response is below:
Beginning Aug. 1, 2015, Discover will simplify the suite of cardmember benefits that it provides by eliminating certain benefits in order to provide a better customer experience to all our cardmembers. We will continue to evaluate new benefits based on cardmember feedback. For details about the current cardmember benefits please visit: www.discover.com/cardbenefits
