The Fine Print

  • Valid 11/20 – 11/26
  • Promo not valid in VT

Our Verdict

Wish this offer was on Visa cards, but still a good deal to rack up drugstore-category spend or if you have spend to rack up and what to push it out to the future. Remember, Chase Freedom is offering 5x on drugstores this quarter.

There’s also a deal showing in the ad to get $10 Extrabucks with $50 Google Play gift cards.

Regular gift card purchases (like Best Buy) do not count for Amex Business Plat. They will award your points, them claw them back. I would not think Amex GC would count on BPlat either, but not sure. Not sure on other Amex cards. Just data point for BPlat.

Are there any issues about whether amex gift card purchase count towards minimum spends for amex CC signup bonuses?

I live in Northern CA and I was unable to purchase these AmEx GCs w my Chase Freedom. They said you can’t buy gift cards on credit.

CVS has monthly gift card purchase limit of $4000 per ID, is this right?

I haven’t heard of a monthly limit. It should be $2000 per 24 hours. But possibly your local store has its own rules (which might not be enforced by the register).

Can these AMEX cards be used for online payments?

That’s a broad question.

For instance, does the electricity company always accept Amex? One must check each individual payment site?

You can use them for Plastiq too. So for $500, you’d earn 2500 UR and pay $12.50 in fees. Not bad.

Yup, that’s what we did with the $1,500 each the wife and I spent last week with Freedom at Walgreens.

I did that deal at Walgreens last week with my Freedom 5% CB Visa Cards. Take the AMEX GCs to Office Max/Depot for their $15.00 discount on a $300.00 Visa purchase. Run the AMEX GC like any other credit card. I did three of those today without any problem.
Maximum Discount is $15.00 unlike previous OfficeMax/Office Depot promos, the $15.00 maximum discount is locked into the register. I purchased $200.00 VCG and either $100.00 fixed or a variable GC for $100.00.
Fixed value cards are $5.95 purchase fee. Variable value cards are $6.95 purchase fee.

This is a great work around for folks without an INK card if they have FREEDOM bonus 5% unused .

Thumbs up on the Amex use for Visas at OD. Good to have both brands for versatile use.

I’m inferring from the post and replies that amex gift cards are harder to liquidate than visa. Is that true? What’s the difference? Thanks.
