Filed A Purchase Protection Or Return Protection Claim With American Express? You’ll Receive $50.95

American Express cards have some of the best credit card benefits out of all the payment networks, in the past if you’ve filed a purchase protection or return protection claim with American Express and they required you to send the item to them then the cost of shipping was your responsibility.

A number of people are reporting that they have received a letter stating the following:

We are writing to follow up on a claim you filed under the benefits associated with your American Express Card. As part of that claim, we originally requested the item be sent to us for inspecting, at your expense. However, to reimburse you for any shipping costs, we are issuing you a $50.95 statement credit, per eligible claim, which will reflect in your statement in an upcoming billing cycle.

At American Express, we are committed to providing you with the best possible experience. If the cost of shipping the item exceeded the amount credited to your account, please contact us at 1-800-322-1277. Our experienced customer care professionals are available to assist you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To avoid processing delays please reference <code> and have the proof of the original shipping payment amount available when you’re calling.

Sincerely,

American Express Customer Care

This is pretty awesome, American Express are either doing this due to legal concerns (in which case we’ll see similar stuff from the other payment networks) or because they are losing market share to card issuers like Chase. Either way, I’m not complaining.

It’s great that they are giving such a high amount per claim without requiring shipping purchase proof. If you’re unsure how purchase protection works, I’d recommend reading this post. I’ve filed a few claims with American Express in the past, so I am looking forward to receiving my free money. If you haven’t received a letter yet, I’d recommend waiting a few days/week before calling American Express – I’m sure they are slowly sending out these letters to all cardholders.

I’ve done a few purchase protection cases on low-dollar amounts. They never made me actually send in the item, they just credited me for the claim amount right away. I’m guessing that means I won’t be eligible for this free money. Oh well.

Now I see on flyertalk that someone got reimbursed even though he didn’t have to send in the item. Hoping for the best!
