Free Credit Monitoring – New Benefit for AAA Members [Northeast]

AAA announced a new benefit in which all members will be eligible for free Experian credit monitoring via ProtectMyID. [UPDATE: It appears that this benefit is only for AAA East Central which services parts of New York, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.]

New AAA Benefit

Many of us are familiar with the ProtectMyID system from the free year of credit monitoring we received after the Target data breach. We’ve also mentioned more recently that you can get a free year of monitoring if you were affected by the Staples breach or the Kmart breach. AAA members now have this as a permanent benefit, a $79 value.

There’s also a second option of paying $8.95 per month to get monitoring on all 3 major credit bureaus and a few additional perks. Here’s the comparison chart:

Final Thoughts

They claim that the $8.95 is a 60% discount off the regular price, though it seems from the ProtectMyID site that the regular price is $15.95 (apparently the 3-bureau option), which makes the discount less than 50%.

In any case, I think that the free option is a great new benefit, I love getting real-time alerts via email whenever there’s any activity on my credit report. It helps me know which credit card issuer pulled which report, and when new accounts start showing on my credit report.

It’s nice to be able to get such alerts from all 3 credit bureaus, and now AAA members can have that for a low price of $8.95. I don’t think I’d pay that much for the benefit, but for someone who is interested in paying for the information, this can be from the most economical ways of doing so.

It’s good to see credit monitoring becoming more available as this helps people stay on top of their credit and alerts them of potential problems.

My AAA is Nebraska or as we know it Cornhusker AAA.
This has been something we have had since at least the end of July 2015.

Looks like this benefit only works for mid-atlantic AAA members. My AAA is with colorado, and it doesn’t work.
