Free Money or Miles with WSJ Subscription [New Members Only]

Many shopping portals offer nice bonuses for signing up on a Wall Street Journal subscription. The incentives range from $15 cash to 1300 AAdvantage miles or 1100 Southwest miles, among others; see all offers here. We’ve discussed in the past how to take up this offer in the past; the key is to find a method of subscribing at little or no cost and net the cashback or miles for free.

Currently, WSJ has a promotion running where you can signup for a 2-month subscription at the cost of just $1. This offer is valid until December 11, 2015.

Even better – some of the portals explicitly include this promo in the portal cashback offer, including the Barclay Rewardboost portal and all the Cartera portals: Southwest, AAdvantage, etc.

Accrue an extra 1100 miles toward that Companion Pass or net $14. It’s pretty easy to signup for a subscription – choose the digital one if you aren’t interested in the subscription – and you’ll just pay $1 for the miles/cashback from the portal. Note that the link from the portal does not take you directly to the $1 option; you’ll have to change the URL to the $1 link, and the portal should still work fine as it’s included in the terms.

The best cashback options are probably 1500 Barclay points (which will become closer to $16 after getting the travel redemption bonus) or 1600 Plenti points (not quite cash but close) or $15 from Citi or Lucky Rewards. The mileage options include Southwest, United, AAdavantage, and Alaska.

REMEMBER TO CANCEL THE SUBSCRIPTION! Notate it on your calendar. You need to call in to cancel – it can’t be done online. Some people report being hounded by the reps when trying to cancel. When I canceled a few months back that was not my experience; it was a quick, painless phone call.

Important: This WSJ offer is only available to someone who hasn’t been a WSJ subscriber for the past 180-days. Many of us took advantage of a similar opportunity back in July and are not eligible for this one. (It’s not clear if this is enforced and it’s not clear whether you can subscribe to a different kind of package, e.g. digital instead of classic.)

I took advantage of this promo on 11/27 but the miles are yet to post. Does it usually take this long? I had to change the URL as mentioned in the post. Not sure if that had an impact on getting the purchase to track.

Still waiting (usually the AA portal sends an email within 3 days or so)

Can cancel this subscription once your portal miles post or do you have to wait the full two months?

And if you care about digital only, you can set your profile to put you on vacation mode for as long as possible. This extends your subscription duration. And yes, you keep digital access even when your print subscription is on vacation.

Chuck at what point do you change the URL? can you break it down?

so go to portal, click through WSJ and when you get to their website just paste the $1 URL and hit enter which will reload the page? You’re saying this will still track?
