- Maintain a minimum of $10,000 in any combination of checking, savings, CDs, retirement deposits, investments (including annuity balances reflected on your Key Investment Services LLC (KIS) account statement)4, credit cards1, loans2, and lines of credit2, OR
- Have a KeyBank mortgage automatic payment deduction of $500 or more each statement cycle, OR
- If you are a Key@Work program member and have at least $1,000 in cumulative direct deposits each statement cycle
Our Verdict
This bonus sucks compared to the previous bonuses KeyBank has offered, their last bonus was the best as it came with a $300 bonus and you could open the hassle free checking account. Usually if you have to open the Key Advantage account you get at least $300 and if the bonus is only $200 you can open the Hassle Free account, this bonus is the worst of both worlds where the last bonus was the best of both worlds.
You can churn this bonus but only once every twelve months so I’d recommend waiting for a $200 offer with the hassle free account or $300 offer with the key advantage account (or hopefully another $300 with hassle free offer). Because of this I wouldn’t bother with this bonus, head over to our recommended bonuses and see what else is available.
We’ve still added it to our checking bonus database, that can be viewed here.
Tried doing a little URL engineering to get a $400 code emailed to me with no success.
Is this $200 the best public offer right now?
If I get a $400 code from a friend is it likely tied to them only?
Note that credit cards are included in the “clients who have not had any type of account with KeyBank within the last 12 months” rule. If you have or had a credit card in the last 12 months with Key bank, you can’t get this bonus. Even credit cards that were transferred over from a different bank count against you.

Thanks, Dave. I’ve updated the current bonus to reflect this.
Quick question.. Does the direct deposit have to be $500 or more in 1 deposit within 60 days or can it be a sum of two deposits?
Thanks!
It has to be at least ONE $500 deposit. Cannot be split.

Completed wifes DD on 11/13/15 and was also paid out today.
I Found a BCT (Bank Cart Trick) similar to SCT.
Per DOC.com, I was checking out the Banking Sign-up Bonuses to see about making some money from Manufactured Banking (Spending).
After I applied for a new Checking account to get the $200 from KeyBank, In the middle of the process, I received a Pop-up saying I’ve been pre-qualified for 2 of the Credit Cards. It specified that the CL would be at least $2k.
I chose one, but right before I submitted the app, I did a google search to find out if Keybank does a SP/HP on the PreQual pop-ups. Based on additional info from others I’ve found, is that if you get the pop-up, similar to SCT pop-ups, then it’s a SP.
This is NOT normal usually for a Major Bank to offer a SCT type CC offer. Also, I’ve never received or heard of a Bank in General presenting you with a Pre-Qual Pop-up either. Caught me by surprised as it was unexpected and Banks don’t usually do that. HOWEVER, I didn’t accept the offer just yet. I was told I can come back to the site if I want to, which I did to test it out and sure enough every page I navigated to kept presenting me the pop-up offer, just like a SCT.
I’ve only found a couple sources saying Keybank is SP with these offers. I haven’t found anything about Keybank doing a HP at all, unless you outright make a direct request to apply for the card.
Does anyone know or can confirm if Keybank does a HP/SP on Pre-Qual pop-ups?
Very interesting, Ziggy! Would love to hear your results.
I opened a new account for the $300 bonus no hassle deal and key bank said I had to go to my local branch with drivers license SS card etc or the account would be closed in 60 days. Anyone have experience with this? I’m traveling so it’s not an option for me to go within 60 days. I was REALLY annoyed.
Can you not fax/send this information in?
No, faxing or mailing this information is not going to be an option. It’s going to require him to visit a physical location in person.
Now, if it was for an online bank like Capital One 360 or Discover Bank, then they would either outright deny him and send him a letter in about a week or prompt him to call them directly.
I used Discover ACH, but the transaction detail did not say direct deposit at all. I am not sure it will work since there is no data point using discover…
Hey Will, can you please do a post on how best (easiest) to close these bank accounts? Done several in the past months for wife and I and now looking to close, but would hate to call in or go to branch for each of them. Wife would be extremely unhappy. 🙁 Thanks!
Personally, I first try with a sm (secure message from within the bank portal), if that doesn’t work than call. Many (if not most) banks that do have a local branch have made me go in branch to close, despite my over-the-phone protest.
Make sure there is no incoming transaction to a recently closed checking/savings acct or that would trigger it open and might also take it to a negative balance.
In order of ease:
1. Send a secured message
2. Phone call (if not allowed, ask about three)
3. Send a letter
4. Go into branch
Will write a more detailed posted soon.
Any recent data points on whether ACH pushes from Capital One 360, Chase or other banks have counted as direct deposit to trigger the bonus?
Generally people only post updated data points if things change, you should be good to go.
