list of methods banks count as direct deposits

List Of Methods Banks Count As Direct Deposits

Below is a list of banks, along with what they’ll count as a direct deposit. This is useful information because a lot of bank sign up bonuses require you to make direct deposits to receive the sign up bonus. Changing where your paycheck is deposited can be frustrating and time consuming. We’ve included the source(s) in brackets next to each method. Note: If Bluebird or Serve show as working/not working then this will be the case for Redcard/Redbird as well. They all run on the same platform (the same is true in reverse as well).

    Hi William,
Does this mean that I can load MGC to AP and then send the money to my own Serve account via ACH, up to 1k/month? Or can I only send money to Serve via ACH that comes from an AP balance?

Thanks in advance. Love all your work

    • This page is for bank account bonuses. Sometimes there is a requirement that you need a direct deposit, this page will let you know what qualifies as a direct deposit. These are loopholes as the fine print usually says payroll & government benefits only.

Why not load the MGC to AP and then send directly to a trusted friend? I see no reason to involve Serve into the mix.

  7. SavingsChris says:

Discover Bank ACH counted as DD for 1st Niagara.

  8. Dudley says:

For the First Niagara bonus I transferred $300 from my BOA savings to the linked First Niagara account. I did not get credit for that. If I go the paypal route (this may sound like a dumb question) but how do you actually do an ACH push from paypal? The options i’m seeing in paypal ask for an email or mobile number to send to. I don’t see any options for sending to a bank.

  13. Janice says:

I’m trying to find out which banks will accept a bank transfer of funds that I initiate as a substitute for direct deposit from the official sources: employer, pension or government. I do not see in your article any legend to show the meaning of the numbers you list. Can you add to your article what the meaning is of your numbers? Also is it a fact that a self-initiated ACH transfer will work? Most of the promotions state explicitly that these 3 are the only 3. I do have experience with Bank of America. They allow a bank transfer. I learned this after much frustration trying to set up the official direct deposits.

    • Hi Janice,

The numbers are data points where somebody was able to successfully use that method to meet a bonus or fee waiver requirement. They are links and you can click on them to see when they were posted.

It’s not a fact that any of these methods will work, it’s just an indication of what has worked in the past. In most cases the financial institutions cannot tell the difference between an employer payment/government benefit and a person to person ACH transfer.

Hope this helps and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

  14. Janice says:

I just (Nov 2014) did a transfer into my Bank of America checking account from Capital One 360 checking account and it satisfied BOA’s direct deposit requirement.

    • Chase: Serve worked (6/27/2016); Discover didn’t work (6/9/2016)
    • KeyBank: Serve ACH worked (5/16/2016)
    • Santander: Discover ACH worked (1/25/2016)
    • Technology Credit Union: Santander ACH worked (5/21/2016)

  17. Sue says:

    Tech CU (7/16)
    First Tennessee (7/16)

  18. Jay says:

I’m currently working on Santander and BoA checking bonuses, any recent updates for these two?

AA’s DP for Santander (2 comments up) using Discover ACH was back on 1/25/16, I too tried Discover last week and it posted as (My full name) P2P XXXXXX with X being numbers in the activity description so kind of skeptical that will work. Also tried Amazon payments and it posted without any of the usual terminology such as ACH, PPD, etc so not sure if that one will count. Any one with a DP on amazon payments counting as a DD?

Also for BoA checking, the list of BoA DPs are all pretty old, dating back at least 5 years, any recent ones? I have tried amazon payments and Discover so far. For Discover the description had P2P and my full name in it, so most likely won’t work. Amazon is still pending and should post tomorrow so can’t confirm yet. Any recent DPs for BoA?

    Thanks!!

    • Just because it lists as p2p doesn’t mean it won’t work. Usually people only update us if DP’s change.

    • Paul says:

For BOA, did Discover trigger the bonus?
Cap 360 did not trigger the bonus.
Also, there might be a difference what counts as DD to waive fees vs. what triggers the bonus.

      • Paul says:

I should point out that the reason why I know that 360 no longer works is because I did a “real” DD on a different BOA account and the bonus posted within a few days.

For the other person’s account I only did 360 and it has been well over a month and nothing.

  33. K says:

For Bank of America, for about four years, I’d just transfer 250.01 from my Paypal to BOA and that would satisfy the Direct Deposit need to keep my account fee free. I stopped doing that last year when I realized that my credit card processing (self-employed/small business) would almost always have a transfer above $250 and that would satisfy the need. PayPal was working at least up until June of 2015.

After transferring funds from Paypal to PNC, I received an email notification saying that I had a DD.

  42. Pablo says:

There is a mistake for #2 for ACH under citibank. It looks like it should be moved to Chase ACH Direct Deposit instead (though that post was over 6 years ago) since they are they are pushing funds from a Citi bank account to a Chase account to trigger a direct deposit.

Also, Santander Bank ACH Push to Citibank counts as a direct deposit so you can use this as #2 for ACH under Citi. I appear to get Thank you points every month as I meet the direct deposit requirement simply by ACH push from my Santander checking account.

  43. Pablo says:

Will Amalgamated Bank datapoints be updated?

Santander ACH push qualifies as a direct deposit with them.
I think Paypal and Serve also counts but need to look through posts from you page talking about their Bank Signup bonus to make sure

Make a transfer to Chase from Discover on Sept. 9 and no bonus added. I came here and saw Fidelity would work (before the option was crossed out in your post). The Fidelity fund was posted on Sept. 23 and I saw bonus posted on Sept. 27. Note that both Discover and Fidelity are shown as ACH credit, however Fidelity worked for me. I guess I was lucked out!

  54. Allen says:

Also, my small contribution to this post: I can confirm Serve (One VIP) triggered DD with Key Bank on 3 different accounts recently.

  55. Bill says:

I transferred money from Bank of Internet to Bank of America to get the $300 bonus I signed up witth for $4k of direct deposits. it showed up with P2P in the description and I did not get the bonus (at least not as of couple of weeks after the transfer).

Tried to link it from my Fidelity account and it wouldn’t take, presumably because Fidelity is joint and BofA is individual — “In evaluating your request, Early Warning (a consumer reporting agency) provided us with information that influenced our decision to not link your bank account. Early Warning played no part in our decision and is unable to supply specific reasons why we weren’t able to add your bank account.”

I guess I’ll try Capital One 360 and hope that still works.

  56. Jeff H says:

I did a small Santander Bank ACH to a BAC Savings account only because I wanted to maintain certain balance …. no bonuses involved. Initially, the BAC Savings account showed it as a Santander Bank ACH. Now it shows:

Where you see Jeff H, it has my full legal account holder name. I am not sure if that counts for your purposes or not.

  57. pr says:

    Silly question:

When you see ACH as an excepted DD trigger, that would mean any ACH would do. Yet then you might see TD (just TD, not TD ACH) – does that mean any type of TD transfer would work (ex ACH)?

  65. Adam D says:

If a real direct deposit is needed and no minumum, might as well sign up for uber or lyft, complete 1 “ride” to trigger a direct deposit (could be to a friend requesting a ride who is next to you,you can just accept and end ride after a few minutes without having to go anywhere, minumum $5, you would get $3 commision or they get $15 towards their first ride anyways) I’ve done it, you can change direct deposit bank yourself in your profile weekly if needed. It shows up as “direct deposit payroll” on your statement. Uber/lyft charges no fees to sign up. Use my driver promo code if this info helped.
    UBER driver promo code: GZ10W
    LYFT driver code: ADAM9217

I have a couple of AMEX cards but I am not aware of a ‘checking account’ available as well from AMEX.

Please explain in simple plain English for me, Thanks. My only Direct deposit today is tied up with another bank and I would like to take advantage of KEY bank’s fabulous bonus before they no longer offer this deal.

  71. FHayek says:

Regarding Santander Bank, a transfer from Discover does not count as a direct deposit.

  72. Mike G says:

Note, push from Fidelity Cash Management acct for Chase posted as PPD last week, but did not trigger the bonus today. Looks like it might be dead.

  73. Jeff H says:

Chase $300.00 checking bonus posted this morning 10 days after opening the checking account in Chase branch and a week after Fidelity ACH DD. I tend to doubt the Well’s Fargo ACH DD trial balances under a dollar counted, but that also happened the same day as the Fidelity ACH DD.

  74. Paul says:

Another DP for trying to meet the Chase checking DD requirement:

ACH from Discover (which I use for triggering almost all other bank bonuses) coded as P2P and did NOT trigger the bonus.

ACH from Ally also coded as P2P – I haven’t waited long enough yet to see if the bonus will be triggered, but I’m assuming it won’t be.

  75. Karen says:

Wells Fargo counted a deposit that was made from Dwolla as a direct deposit.

  76. Bill says:

I’ve been trying to qualify for the $300 bonus at Bank of America, which i signed up for a couple of months ago. Transferring from Bank of Internet and Capital One both showed up as P2P (for example, “CAPITAL1 DES:P2P ID:my name”), so presumably they did not work. However, Capital One 360 showed up differently — “CAPITAL ONE N.A. DES:CAPITALONE” so hopefully that still qualifies. I just realized that I had only transferred $3k so I just sent another $1k and hopefully it will trigger the bonus when it gets there on Friday.

Does anyone know how long it takes BofA to credit the bonus to the account?

  77. Frank says:

Does that mean this was not recorded as a direct deposit?

And if not, do you have direct deposit solutions for HSBC? It is not on your list.

    Thanks.

    • We’re not sure yet with HSBC, it’s better when it doesn’t code as P2P but it really depends on the software they are using.

      • anitje says:

I know that it is usually a bad idea to call. But if nothing else codes as “direct deposit”, is it worth taking a chance and calling customer service to see if anything went through as DD? It hardly seems worth tying money up for 4 months or more and going through hoops to meet requirements if you don’t know whether the bonus will post or not.

    • Ken says:

Why not just do Bill Pay? Surely you have bills that need paying 😉

  89. Allen says:

HSBC update: the initial opening deposit coded as “P2P” (no surprise)
Tried a Chase ach — coded as “DEPOSIT FROM JPMORGAN CHASE-EXT TRNSFER”
Tried a Bluebird ach — coded as “DEPOSIT FROM BLUEBIRD-EXCHANGE”

No monthly fees yet, so maybe the Bluebird is successfully triggering the DD requirement…

Robin hood worked, u.s. bank did not.

    • Allison Petteway says:

How exactly did robin hood work? What did you do?I’m waiting on the two small deposits from Robinhood to my bank to verify my bank account. Did those two small deposits trigger it?Or did you get your account verified first, then send money from that account then right back to that account. Or did you add money from another account then send it to your chase account. I’m confused, and how long did it take after the deposit for you to see anything pending from chase?

      • Ben says:

One thing to know is that robin hood requires that you send money back to the account you got it from. I can’t remember the exact timing, but I verified the chase checking to robin hood with the two small deposits first. Then I transferred $10 from chase into robin hood and waited a few days for it to clear. You’ll know it’s cleared and good to transfer back to chase by looking under account summary-> cash available for withdrawal. Then I sent it back to chase through the robin hood app. The next Tuesday after Chase received the $10 I got the bonus.

    • Allison Petteway says:

How did robinhood work for you. Was it the two small deposits they sent to your account? And how long did it take for you to see pending for chase?

Hi I just got into his lucrative hobby this month and I’m trying to learn the ropes. It’s fun; I’m at over $1,000 (hopefully soon to be earned) so far. Can you explain what it means if it says on this page like

    Bank A Works: Bank B, Bank C.

I’m trying to get the direct deposit bonus from Bank A. How do I accomplish that via Bank B? I already have an account at Bank B. If I set up an online transfer, from self to self, initiated by Bank B (they will first send two test deposits), and then send the minimum amount of direct deposit required by Bank A, will that work? I see reference to P2P as well…do I need to send it P2P or via billpay or something, rather than a standard online transfer?
In this case Bank A is Santatander.

    • It basically means what ACH transfers have worked in the past. So with Santander a transfer from Capital One 360 has worked in the past but Discover has not. What you described will work. Hope that helps.

Cap1 360 ACH triggered the $150 bonus for Santander (for significant other).
Chase Business Checking ACH triggered the $150 bonus for TIAA Direct.

REPOSTED DATA POINTS FOR $400 PNC OFFER:

Fidelity has worked for me for over 12 banks as DD for bonus purposes. However, PNC categorized the ACH deposit as “transfer”. My real DD (less than $2000 was “other income”). Fidelity did not work, I ach’d with TIAA DIrect as it showed up a “other income” and the $400 bonus posted yesterday, about 2 weeks after TIAA push….DoC please update for PNC as TIAA Direct as works for DD, and Fidelity as not even though it has in the past. PNC bonuses are too lucrative to miss out.

My theory is that since TIAA Direct has some sort of affiliation with teacher’s pensions, or has in the past that this is the go to bank now for ACH pushes, I signed up for the $150 a few months ago, but in retrospect I would sign up for this bank solely for the purpose of the highest probability of activating the DD bonues for other financial institutions.

    • Kevin says:

      @jnrfalcon,

By Discover, you meant “Online Banking” of Discover Bank, right? Not deposit your rewards or cashback bonus of a Discover credit card to your Wells Fargo Everyday checking account. Your answer would be much appreciated.

  113. JASON says:

ACH push from Alliant counts as direct deposit to Wells Fargo.

I did one ACH transfer from Alliant checking in last statement and realized the statement indicates that it is couned as DD that meets the criteria for waiving monthly fees. I opened the Chase Savings & Checking account $300+$200 offer. I transferred $100 using Fidelity ACH on January 20, and on today, January 24, there is a pending credit for $300 for New Checking.

Fidelity ACH credit is posted as “FID BKG SVC LLC MONEYLINE PPD ID” ACH credit

    • A in TX says:

I also did an ACH transfer from Fidelity Brokerage on Jan 30 and by the next day or two I think it posted the same – as “FID BKG SVC LLC MONEYLINE PPD ID” ACH credit. It took until Feb 7 for the pending credit $300 for New Checking to appear. So it can take over a week.

    • A in TX says:

Can someone clarify exactly that action has been taken on the user’s side when they say they’ve executed an ACH from one bank to another?

I know what the acronym ACH stands for, but it doesn’t tell me the steps the user is taking to ensure that the transfer is coded as an ACH.

Many banks seem to have multiple ways within their own software to initiate money transfers. Linking accounts, sending to friend (which could be yourself), Bill Pay, etc.

Take PayPal for example, which a lot of people use for DDs. Are they linking both Checking accounts to the same PayPal and simply moving money into and out of PayPal (executing the transactions on the PayPal side of things)? Or are they utilizing multiple PayPal accounts so that it appears as if they are transferring money to a different person?

    Many thanks!

    • sam says:

      1. All online transfers between your LINKED accounts are ACH!! 2. Depend on the banks they sometimes count transfers as Direct Deposit or P2P. P2P most of the time not count as Direct Deposit and will not trigger any bonuses. 3. Transferring money from PayPal again is ACH – but again depend on the bank it will count as DD or P2P. people using their own and one PayPal and transfer money back and forth…..!!!

      • J.M. says:

Thanks. That was my understanding. Appreciate the confirmation.

        • sam says:

          U r welcome)
Once again! If banks will notice any of these on your account – you probably won’t get any bonuses! And PayPal not count BY BANKS officially as PayRoll (DD). And you only can add and transfer between YOUR linked accounts under YOUR name – otherwise it will be banded or you would have to pay fees if you want to send money someone else….

  143. Phil S says:

Wells Fargo ACH for Chase checking bonus did not work for me.. would someone mind sharing their steps in getting this to work?

    • Wait till next tuesday, still doesn’t work then I guess it doesn’t work anymore

      • Phil S says:

        Thanks

Also wanted to mention that Chase has a feature in its mobile app to send a push notification if a direct deposit is received in the account. Could be an easy way to see which transfers are counted as direct deposits.

FWIW, I did another transfer from Wells Fargo and received a push notification that a direct deposit was received in the account, so I expect the bonus will post this upcoming Tuesday

  144. i_just_have_no_idea says:

Unfortunately, Capital One P2P payments no longer register as direct deposits in Bank of America. They now just register as transfers, thus, not triggering any minimum direct deposit bonuses. I just tried this this past week.

    • Probably haven’t waited long enough to know for sure it doesn’t trigger the bonus just yet.

      • i_just_have_no_idea says:

Thanks for the update, that’s possible, I’ll wait a week or so and report back. I was just going by the following info, which appeared on the posted transaction:

        Type:Transfer
        Description: Mobile/Email Transfer Conf#######
        Transaction category: Uncategorized: Pending

      • i_just_have_no_idea says:

As an update, it looks like Cap One P2P did not trigger the Bank of America Direct Deposit welcome offer. Upon further inspection, however, it appears I was only supposed to do a basic transfer, and not use P2P. So, I’ve just done that and will update again when it happens.

  145. J.M. says:

Here’s a good random question? Why do banks require DDs at all? Is it to increase their overall cash holdings, with the assumption being that most customers who do a DD will put their entire salary/wage into the single DD at a bank? Maybe it’s so they can plan cash flows better, since they can see what funds are expected to be deposited on a regular basis?

  146. Ron Okpisz says:

I thought I published a comment a couple weeks ago asking about the Santander and Serve as DD for checking bonuses, but I don’t see it anywhere here, did it not get published for some reason?

My question was, for AMEX Serve as the DD for a checking bonus at Santander, do you have to TRANSFER it from the SERVE side and link to the Santander acct at Serve, or can you make the external acct link at Santander for the SERVE acct and then just do a ACH deposit from the Santander side with the $$ coming from the SERVE acct?

Serve only allows one bank acct link at a time apparently, so I’d have to delete my credit union and add Santander if it has to be done from the SERVE side. If it can be done from the Santander side I just need to create an external link at Santander for the SERVE acct, then make a deposit from SERVE.

I guess I will try it that way and see if it counts for the DD, if it doesn’t for some reason, I’ll have to do it the “harder” way and remove my CU from Serve and add Santander there.

Thanks in advance for any experience anyone else has had with this.

  151. JR says:

Anyone have and DPs about how Associated Bank Popmoney codes? Specifically looking for Chase, Santander, and WF for DD requirements.

  152. Tortoiseshell says:

So I have tried a couple of means of triggering DD for PNC.

One bank coded as a transfer, so I’m assuming that’s not working (Schwab). So far, Fidelity is coding as a “deposit”, but not as “salary/direct deposit”, which the verification test deposits from Serve coded as. I’m still waiting on the Serve withdrawal to see how it codes.

Does anyone have an DPs about a “deposit” counting for a DD?

  153. Eduardo Baez says:

Data Point for Wells Fargo Direct Deposit Triggers: ACH Push from Goldman Sachs Savings Account, ACH Push from Fidelity Cash Management Account and ACH Push from Discover Cash Back Bonus Checking Account all were qualified as Direct Deposits by Wells Fargo.

    • Did you get the bonus on four separate accounts?

      • Eduardo Baez says:

No, only one $250 Wells Fargo bonus for which Direct Deposit was optional. I got the bonus right after the last of my 10 debit card purchases posted. However, I think it is good for everybody in DOC forum, to have confirmed data points for future Wells Fargo bonuses requiring direct deposit. I confirmed my data points by looking at my Wells Fargo statement yesterday. The statement includes a detailed section of how the monthly fee can be waived. For the line stating you need at least $500 direct deposit a month to waive the fee, my total qualifying direct deposit amount figure for the month was provided and also a check box close to it which indicated I fulfilled that requirement. After adding all three ACH push transfer amounts (Goldman Sachs, Fidelity and Discover) plus some verification small deposits (Discover sand EverBank) they matched exactly to my statement total qualifying direct deposit amount figure for the month. So, 100% confirmed they are qualified direct deposits.
