Multiple Platinum Cards

Can I get the MB Platinum card if I already have a different Platinum card version? And will I be eligible for the signup bonus as well?

Yes, many people have multiple versions of the Platinum card, and it seems that each version is considered a separate product and you can get the signup bonus on each card separately.

As with all Amex cards, you can only get the signup bonus for the MB Platinum card once. The Platinum card is a charge card, not a credit card, and is thus not subject to the (

The Platinum card is a charge card, not a credit card, and is thus not subject to the (possible) limit of 4 Amex credit cards per person.

Card Details

All Platinum cards come with lots of benefits, among them:

  • $200 airline incidental credit per calendar year
  • Priority pass select
  • Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓

There are also a few Mercedes benefits, which probably won’t apply to most of us:

  1. 5x Membership Rewards points on select Mercedes purchases
  2. Receive a $1000 certificate each year you charge $5,000 in purchases, good toward the future purchase or lease of a new Mercedes-Benz
  3. Up to 2,000 excess miles waived at lease-end on leases through Mercedes-Benz Financial Services
  4. $100 certificate at renewal of your Card account, good toward Genuine Mercedes-Benz Accessories

And you can get a free coffee mug or similar type of item at a Mercedes dealership with the $100 MB certificate (#4 above) which comes after your first purchase and each year thereafter. We wrote more about the $100 accessory certificate in this post.

Our Verdict

Worth picking up if you don’t already have an American Express Platinum card already (or one of the many versions of it) for the lounge access and also sign up bonus. There is the $475 annual fee, but keep in mind you get $200 in airline incidental charges every year (and you can get this once in 2016 and again in 2017). This is the highest bonus we’ve seen on the card and given you can only get the American Express card bonuses once per lifetime it’s worth picking up with this higher sign up bonus.

Looks like it’s not working already. It says it’s expired when I click on the application

I applied about an hour ago and it worked. Odd. Anyway, thanks for posting this; I was considering applying for it and didn’t realize it was expiring. They approved me in minutes and now I’m getting a new Plat card. I already have one, but what’s one more? Really wanted the miles… will look into the Mercedes leasing program; my old Acura got totaled three weeks ago. But will get the free merchandise and collect the two $200 airline credits for 2016 and 2017.

Plus my Amex Costco card is dead now, so I needed another card anyway.

Does the annual fee get assessed right away, or after the first year? In other words, can we open the card, get the bonus points and use the benefits for the first year and then close it without paying the $475 annual fee?

“There is the $450 annual fee…”

Shouldn’t this be $475 annual fee? I just noticed this in the verdict, a small typo.
