  • Once the offer criteria is met, the bonus will be credited into the new personal checking account no later than 80 days from account opening.
  • Qualifying direct deposits are recurring electronic deposits of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your Employer or the Government. Person-to-Person and bank transfers between your existing HarborOne bank accounts or accounts you have at other financial institutions or brokerages do not qualify.
  • Account must remain open, active, in good standing, and in the same product type through the 60 day period from account opening to receive the bonus for all noted offers above.

  • To receive the $500 checking bonus: 1) Open any new eligible HarborOne personal checking account; 2) Make 15 Debit POS withdrawals that must Post and Clear within 60 days of account opening AND 3) Receive direct deposits totaling $10,000 or more made to this account within 60 days of account opening.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

You can open the Free Plus Checking account and still qualify for this bonus, this account has no monthly fee. I wasn’t able to find any early account termination fee in the fee schedule.

Their iChecking account has a $5 monthly fee, this is waived if you have a minimum daily balance of $500+.

Our Verdict

Very large bonus, obviously direct deposit is going to be a challenge (especially at the $10,000 level), the good thing is that the direct deposits need to total that amount within 60 days so you can have multiple direct deposits. They also say they are going to monitor accounts, so this likely needs to be a true direct deposit. This is one of the best checking account bonuses if you’re able to meet the requirements with your paycheck as it’s a soft pull and you can fund with a credit card and it’s a high maximum bonus of $500. In addition no need to worry about any early account termination fees.

  1. Justin says:

Thanks Doc. Under “The Offer” you will want to update the values to reflect the DD $ (they all say $2,500 right now)

  2. Paul says:

    Typo under 500 offer.
Should be 10,000 instead of 2,500.

Anyone know if discover savings works as direct deposit?

  3. VD says:

How about Chase external transfer? Will it be considered as DD?

CAn this be opened online and can be closed through phone? Not able to find any nearby branches

  4. VD says:

Do we need to enter anything on the Promotional code box?

  5. Readers, before you ask basic questions keep in mind this bonus is brand new so it’s unlikely that anybody knows anything about it. Better to keep the comments clear for people providing datapoints! If you do know something about this bank/bonus then please share 🙂

  6. Dan says:

My ability to simultaneously swing bonuses in NH, MA, NY, and WI is really starting pay off

  7. Adam says:

    Subbed. Thanks DoC!

  8. Win says:

A/C opened with $10 CC funding (amount limited by application website) using Cap One card (coded as Other Services but transaction is still pending).

  9. Dan says:

spoke to representative on chat. She said there is no code to enter and the new accounts will be monitored

    • Eddy Cue says:

      Monitored for what?

I couldnt get past the funding page. It says funding should add up to 1k but shows an error. Top of page says 500 cc funding but error persists. Changed it to the $10 DP from above. Still same error

      • Dan says:

Monitored to make sure the bonus requirements are met. Weird thing when I opened the account, it defaulted to opening a CD with minimum deposit of $1000. I had to close out the app, log back into the application and at the bottom select the iChecking product. This allowed for up to $500 funding with VISA/Mastercard. I used Fidelity Visa, will report back on coding. Application is pending review

        • Adam says:

Did you get the account number immediately after opening, or did you have to wait a few days for approval, or for something to come in the mail? Timing will be critical for me to squeeze $10k DD into 60 days (I get paid biweekly and it will take 4 paychecks to hit that amount).

        • Eddy Cue says:

Thank you for your DP. That really helped clarify things and help me complete my application. Like you said, it defaults to a CD (no idea why) so i just followed your instructions and funded up to 500.
My application was approved and showed my my account and routing number

        • Added to post, Thanks Dan!

        • Justin says:

Hey Dan, did the transaction post as a purchase on the Fidelity Visa?

  10. keith Jones says:

So i opened the account today i was able to do a citi AA business mastercard for $500. account approved immediately and as far as i can tell it was a soft pull on the credit.

  11. Bob says:

Phone rep said the bonus applies to ANY new checking account opened with the bank, so no need to choose iChecking, which has the $500 minimum to avoid fee. Definitely go with the Free Plus account if you’re never going to use the ATM card, which is the only difference between the two versions.

    • Dan says:

Don’t you need to use the atm card to get the bonus though?

      • Bob says:

Sorry, wasn’t clear. I meant use the debit card at non-HarborOne ATMs for transactions, withdrawals, etc. iChecking has no fee for outside network ATMs, Free Plus has fees. Debit transactions required for the bonus do not matter here.

  12. Joey says:

if you follow the link provided on the post, it automatically opens up a CD. So you need to use this URL to select the right product to open https://harborone-web.oflows.net/oflows/web/prodstart.seam?page=deposit&newsess=false&_ga=1.110810119.32535257.1490743153

  13. leon says:

SO and I both declined. At the end of the application where they would usually ask some security questions from public knowledge base, we were not given any. Straight up declined after.

Noticed this has happened to both of us recently. Also this is the same backend web app like Santander’s, which also did not give us the verification questions. Could be chex sensitive?

  14. tinker25 says:

    2 DPs –

    1) Do not attempt to piggyback savings in the same app, I picked iChecking and Savings. Funding is min 1000 for saving, but total CC fund is max $500. So I could not fund with CC, had to use other back acct. App went to pending w/o acct # given. Pending for verify external bank acct via trail deposits.

    2) Lesson learnt from 1). For SO, only picked iChecking. Able to fund $500 with Citi AA. Instant approval, with acct # given.

  15. Joey says:

opened Free Plus Checking account (without maintenance fee, confirmed with CS that ANY checking account will qualify) on 28th with $500 on Citi Premier.

  16. Pablo says:

Besides the data points above, might want to modify the avoiding fees section since the terms do say that you can open any checking account and still be eligible for this offer.

Anyway, thanks for the info William! Will be trying them out later this month. Too bad my company takes ages to switch the DD info so will be a bit tricky for me to get the timing right so I have enough to hit one of the thresholds for the bonus.

  17. Ebene says:

Do you have to live in this state or can you just visit there and open?

  18. Victor says:

Any successful alternatives to satisfy DD requirements so far like Chase external transfer etc?

  19. Brandon says:

Does ‘POS debit transactions’ mean that you need to physically be in a store, or can you do them online (e.g. small denom Amazon GCs)?

  20. pipilu says:

What count as “debit card POS withdrawals” in the requirement? Does that mean debit card purchases with PIN? In other words, does using debit card as credit card without PIN count?

  21. mangoceviche says:

DP: funded with Alaska Biz Visa and transaction coded as purchase

    Transaction type:Purchase
Merchant category:MEMBER FINANCIAL INSTITUTION-MERCHANDISE AND SERVICES

  22. Bob says:

State requirement is very strict. Your ID has to be issued by one of the states on the list, otherwise you’ll be asked for the correct ID or account has to be closed. I think they’re a small bank with too much time on their hands for manual review = NO BUENO

    • RandomImmigrant says:

Opened account with other state’s license in branch. Account and Online banking was set up. Four days after, I have a direct deposit going into the account and money being transferred from paypal to this account. I login and notice that the account was closed without prior notice. Tried reaching out to branch directly and also through customer service, and that is one hell of a experience. The manager doesn’t even care about the struggle he has caused. Since the account is now closed, I have to wait for god knows how long to get my money back. As Bob said, it’s a small bank with way too much time on their hands for manual review. You cannot churn this bank, they will churn you of your time, patience and peace.

NOTE: APPLY only if you have a MASS License and a boat load of patience.

      • Bob says:

What was the reason they gave for closing the account? I was told pretty clearly what I needed to do for the account before they moved forward.

        • RandomImmigrant says:

Well, let me walk you through what happened.

A friend and me visited the Randolph branch and the manager says the documentation we have isn’t enough since we don’t have a MASS license irrespective of all other perfect documentation. So, we head over to the Brockton branch to try our luck. The manager goes over all the documents and mentions about license requirement but says it shouldn’t be an issue. He helps us open the account and deposit money in there. Three days later, he rings me up, leaves a voicemail with just his number and nothing else. I was caught up at work and couldn’t call back. But when I check my account this morning, it’s closed and I try to reach him all day, until I finally got him end of the day. He conveniently ignores the explanation as to why he closed the account and when I bug him enough he says since it isn’t a MASS license, he has to close the account. I asked him what happened to his promise otherwise while opening, he just said i’m sorry.

      • Bob says:

You must’ve just had bad luck with incompetent reps. I was told clearly that an ID from any of the states in the title of this post would allow me to keep the account open. So it’s not just MA license only. But maybe I’ll get shut down later on…who knows..$500 is still worth this risk though lol

        • B says:

Just to provide a DP on this–I do not have a license in any of the abovementioned states, and I was able to open the account (my parents live there and I used their address). I had to provide “proof of residency” (e.g. a bill with the address) but license address match was not a requirement. Whether or not I get the bonus is another story, but I was at least able to open the account.

  23. tinker25 says:

Attempted to use debit card today to pay verizon online. Got declined.

“Your payment transaction has failed, because of invalid card data or authorization is declined by your financial institution. Please contact your financial institution or verify the information and re-submit the payment”

Tried on Amazon to buy GC, worked. Although HarborOne online has no pending tx showing yet. Which is also strange.

Never had a bank Debit card failed at Verizon.

  24. tinker25 says:

spoke too soon, amazon order got canceled, so the debit card must have issues, Tried SO’s new card, same issue. two strikes for HarborOne debit cards.

Anyone had luck using the debit card?

    • Joey says:

i was keep getting error as well and when i talked to their customer service team they told me, my card was not activated. WTF i specifically remember activating AND changing my pin number… so i called the activation number and activated with the updated PIN number from the first call and now i can actually use the debit card.

      so key takeaways? activate twice?

      • tinker25 says:

thanks Joey. The bank is incompetent, I SMed them, was told the same, that it was not activated, I SMed back with my phone record the date/time/duration, and told them I have also changed my PIN and tossed away their PIN in recycle. They wrote back asking me to use the old PIN to activate it again. Of course, the old PIN did not work. I followed your advise, used the updated PIN to active it again, it now works. Did the same for SO.

        Bizaar…

      • Bob says:

lol activate twice. That’s kinda retarded. This bank has not been impressive so far. Churn and burn?

    • Bob says:

Reporting back. Only had to activate once via phone and picked new PIN. Actually tried to activate a second time right afterwards, phone system said “you’re already activated.” Amazon reloads worked immediately later. Bug is probably fixed!

  25. Adam says:

Applied & approved for FreePlus Checking. Didn’t seem to be terribly sensitive to other new accounts, as I had opened 8 over previous 6 months, most recent about 3 weeks ago. Funded $500 with CSR, posted as purchase. Only problem now is I can’t access online banking – was never provided or asked to pick username/password (credentials used for the application itself appear to be separate). Attempted to go through enrollment process but that errored out, suggesting I’m already enrolled. So will probably have to call customer service to straighten that out. 🙁

    • Joey says:

ya, mine errored out as well. You definitely need to call the customer service to get it activated correctly. I had to do the same. their IT system isn’t the best…

  26. Anon says:

So I called Customer Service today to verify that my first legitimate direct deposite posted as a direct deposit despite the system saying “Company Name ACH” and the CSR said “Yea if its an external deposit then its fine.”

So I am thinking that any external deposit may be considered a direct deposit. Definitely worth pushing the 10k in and then pulling out a couple days later and see what happens.

  27. tinker25 says:

Don’t know what to say about this bank –

Completed 15 POS and >$10000 payroll DD.

SMed to ask if met requirement (not sure if the 15 POS), told to contact Customer Service. Secure emailed, reply is:

‘there is a report that is processed for this bonus promotion so unfortunately Customer Service isn’t able to advise customer’s if they qualified or not… ‘ then pasted the T&C

    • Bob says:

Just call the bank and see what they say. I don’t waste time with SMs b/c there is no chance to call out whatever dumb thing the CSR is doing in real time. I’m days away from completing the requirements at $10k level as well, will report back.

      • tinker25 says:

Can’t, SO is never wants to bother with these sort of stuff

SM I can, calling won’t do with a different gender of voice

        • Bob says:

Gender doesn’t matter. I have called as a Stephanie for my girlfriend many times. As long as you pass security screening, you’re good to go. The CSRs know what’s going on. Sometimes they do a small double take when they see the full name but quickly switch to calling me “Mr. Last Name.” Worst case just tell them you’re transgender. Lol

          • tinker25 says:

            @Bob Admire your courage 🙂

Although part of the reason for SM is to have a record, while phone call does not serve that purpose…

  28. Hardtacokit says:

Since the bonus is so high, I decided to actually do my Paycheck DD here. I’m 2 weeks away from the $10k, and i did 15 Amazon gift card reloads. I’ll report in 2 weeks.

  29. tinker25 says:

Anyone who has called and got the confirmation that the bonus is attached to the acct? I called, the CSR could not find that info. Will call another day, but wanted to check with this community

  30. Da Man says:

Has anyone gotten the bonus yet? I am a 3 weeks away from meeting the $10,000 DD requirement. I just have to meet the 15 POS requirement, just wondering if Amazon reloads work.

  31. Bob says:

Customer service will not confirm if bonus requirement met. Looks like this is a race to the finish…as in, no one will know until the 80 day minimum wait for bonus passes to see if we get it. My real DD and debit purchases are in, just waiting it out. Can’t say I’m surprised by this. They do take mobile deposit for MOs so I’m keeping it open for MS anyway. 34 days in, 46 days to go…

  32. Hardtacokit says:

I just spoke to customer service and they DID confirm that I have met all the requirements. (I did over $10k in paycheck DD, and 15 amazon gift card reloads). He specifically said that I’ve met the requirements.

I asked him WHEN I would receive the $500, and he put me on hold for 5 minutes…. when he came back he said that my account should receive the $500 within 60 days, and to call back if I don’t receive it in 60 days or so.

    Progress!

    • Eric says:

Is your amazon gift car reload proceeded as Debit card or credit card?

    • tinker25 says:

My attempt to confirm SO’s account was to no avail, did payroll DD, but not sure if debit card trans is good to count towards the 15x,

      the online display on harborone:

POS Withdrawal POS Withdrawal (ELN) VERIZON WRL

What’s the Amazon reload display as?

      • Hardtacokit says:

        POS withdrawal for amazon reloads

        • Victor says:

Is there any minimum purchase amount for POS amazon reloads? I made 15 trx of $1 each.. i should be good then? will bank reject these sort of POS and will not count towards 15 trx count?

  33. Paul says:

For a free $5 on top of the $500, if you sign up for HarborOne’s BuzzPoints rewards, you get 2,000 points just for signing up. I redeemed for a $5 amazon gift card (1,750 points).

Debit tx’s count towards buzzpoints, but as far as I can tell it would not be worth heavy spending to accumulate points.

As a side note, still waiting on my $500, had $10K in real direct deposits within 60 days, and 20 real debit POS transactions.

  34. Avi says:

The link says the offer is valid till 06/30. It’s been extended. 😀

  35. larry says:

What’s the latest on payroll dd and is there an alternative to this via ACH, Paypal or some other form to get $10k in there with 60 days? tia

    • Bob says:

They are a manual review bank so probably no one has tried to game it with ACHs and it probably wouldn’t work. They sound serious on the phone

  36. Victor says:

Anybody reached 60 day mark with all conditions met? update would be much helpful!

  37. tinker25 says:

4/28 met all, 20 days to go

  38. Eddy Cue says:

My new account bonus posted today. I just noticed I made an error in my calculations – I was aiming for the 500 dollar bonus but ended up getting 150 instead. I was initially confused but realized my mistake.

I misread the DD requirement as $X amount within 60 days but completely missed the “recurring” part. I had deposited my tax refund thinking it would help me hit close to the 10k requirement and then supplement the rest with my paycheck but nope it doesnt count (I didnt call just looked at the terms again)

Ugh…all that trouble for just 150

    Oh well… #facepalm

    • Victor says:

I have deposited multiple $3K+ deposits and totalled more than $10K. If that case i will be getting $150 only?

  39. HardTacoKit says:

    My $500 bonus posted today!

I did real payroll DD and 15 $0.50 amazon reloads.

  40. Bob says:

    Bonus posted yesterday. Timeline:
    4/9 opened
4/15 confirmed open (had to get an ID from one of the New England states)
5/8 single employer DD of $10,000
    5/9 completed 15x Amazon
    5/16 $500 bonus posted

Will keep open for mobile MO deposits. Thanks DOC!

  41. bmanamex says:

This one may have evaded me. I opened on 3/28. Did deposits with Vanguard Brokerage and 15x Amazon, no Bonus.

  42. Joey says:

    03/28 opened
    04/24 deposit completed
04/28 15 purchases completed (some real, some amazon)
    06/15 $500 bonus posted

  43. tinker25 says:

One person got $500, another one got $150, both met requirements of employer DD $10K and 15 tx. SMed on the $150.

    • Eddy Cue says:

@tinker25 are you saying both of you did 10k DD but only one person got 500?

      • tinker25 says:

yes, one got $500, the other got $150. SMed, Bank saying not payroll even though they are from employer payroll. SMed back, asking which one is not payroll !

  44. Victor says:

I have deposited four $3K+ deposits within 60 days to reach $10K limit. I am wondering in which bonus category i will fall under? $150 or $300 or $500? Could someone clarify pls?

    • Sa says:

What is the total of all dds that you did within the 60 days ?

      • Victor says:

$8000+ in direct deposit and 3000+ through chase external transfer

        • Taylor says:

What is this chase External transfer? I am going to be about $200 short and I’m looking for ways to get the $300 bonus without looking too try hard with ACH transfers.

          • Victor says:

That’s ACH only. transferring from Chase to harborone. But see Bob’ comment below. Anyway its manual review and ACH will not count towards requirement!

  45. Bob says:

EVERYONE, remember this is a manual review bank. They are looking at all activity manually. The regular DD tricks aren’t going to work here. Need real employer DD. Good luck all
