More on Gift Card Deals at Staples

Staples.com

We wrote about the discounted gift cards available at Staples this week. Both Gap and Sephora are gift cards which can be easily resold at 80% of its value which makes these deals an easy way of racking up INK points or meeting a signup bonus spend requirement.

Here are the links to the online deals:

Sephora Link

Must use offer code: 41996 at checkout to get the discount.

The Gap deal is still available while the Sephora deal was sold out within hours. Hopefully, it will come back in stock, but I’m not holding my breath. Both the $50 and the $25 in out of stock.

The online deal is good for someone who has a means of reselling e-gift cards. For physical gift cards, you’ll have to go in-store. The advantage of online purchases is that you can go through a shopping portal and hopefully the purchase will track. There is a limit of one offer per transaction. You can technically keep ordering 1 gift card per transaction, but I don’t know how much Staples will like it.

Which brings us to the in-store option…

Staples In-Store

We assumed that the limit of 1-per-transaction would apply in-store as well. However, two readers already told us (in the comments of the original post) that the Gap and Sephora deals are working on more than one card at a time.

This really changes the game considerably since you could purchase, say, ten $50 in one transaction and pay $400. Note that both data points we have are with the purchase of two gift cards for a total of $80. It’s fair to assume that if it works for more than one card that it will work for an unlimited number, though there is a small risk that this isn’t the case.

Since these gift cards can be sold at ~80% of their value, it’s essentially an unlimited point-earning possibility, throttled only by the amount of Gap and Sephora gift cards available and by nervous cashiers.

This could be particularly useful for racking up INK points or for meeting a minimum spend requirement. There is, however, considerable work which goes into dealing with lots of $50 cards. And finding stores which have these gift cards stocked. Because of these factors, this isn’t necessarily worthwhile.

Personally, I decided it’s not worth my time. If I had an  INK card it’s possible I’d think differently.

Confirmed works in any quantity you want and combination of $25 gift cards too. Bought 4x$50 and 12x$25 in one transaction and received correct discount.
