The Fine Print

  • Qualifying direct deposits include but are not limited to electronic deposits such as payroll or social security and do not include electronic money transfers or credits such as account-to-account transfers or those made through internet payment services
  • Bonus will post to the account within 90 days of meeting the direct deposit requirement

Avoiding Fees

The bonus is available on any personal checking account, including: EZChoice Checking, MyChoice Checking, MyChoice Plus Checking, MyChoice Premium Checking, Classic Checking, Basic Banking. Let’s look at the easiest options for keeping fee free.

[Note  M&T Bank will waive the first month’s monthly fee. M&T will charge your account service fee every month even if you meet the requirements; the fee is refunded the same day if requirements are met. So you always want to keep enough in your account to cover the monthly fee.]

EZChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $9.95, soon changing to $6.95.

  • Monthly fee is waived by making just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase.

MyChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $6.95 that can be waived with any of the following methods:

  • Receive direct deposits totaling $200 or more
  • Make 10 or more monthly debit card purchases
  • Keep an average daily balance of $500 (might be $1,500 depending on your area) or more

Basic Banking

This account has a non-waivable $3 monthly fee.

Early Account Termination Fee

Update: Looks to be $50 now.

Our Verdict

If you’ve been following along with M&T bonuses (and you should have been) then you’ll know that these are churnable (I think you only need to use a different promo code). This is technically targeted, but in the past this hasn’t been enforced at all. In fact the state requirement isn’t enforced either. M&T has been ridiculous money recently for a lot of people, so enjoy this one as well. Definitely going on our best checking bonus list. They currently have these other offers:

Big thanks to reader, Michael who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. Phineas says:

Hey DoC, thanks for the amazing site. I believe that the expiration date on the top of this page should be updated to 5/24/17. Keep the M&T bonuses coming! I’ve done 3 so far…

  2. Justin says:

M&T what are you doing to me hahaha. Thanks Doc

  3. Danielle says:

Does anyone have any tips on how to fix it if I entered the promo code incorrectly and wasn’t targeted? They refused over the phone because they could tell I wasn’t targeted.

  4. Leo says:

Any rules about eligibility for past bonus recepients?

  5. RB says:

Looks like they have at least 4 branches in FL. Isn’t FL counted for this bonus?

  6. Scott says:

“[Note that M&T Bank is one of the few banks that doesn’t give you a grace period, the requirements mentioned below must be completed your first month to keep it fee-free.]”

This is not true, at least for the EZChoice checking. The first month’s service charge is refunded with the description “ONE MONTH WAIVE”.

Something worth noting: M&T will charge your account service fee every month even if you meet the requirements; the fee is refunded the same day if requirements are met. So you always want to keep enough in your account to cover the monthly fee.

  7. MarcoPolo says:

Thank DoC and Michael for the gift which keeps on giving.

  8. Brandon says:

anyone worried about M&T clawing back these bonuses for those not meeting state requirements?

  9. Jags4186 says:

It makes you wonder why it’s so hard for HSBC to pay their bonus…

    • JASON says:

      hahaha!!!

    • Superchurn says:

yeah…im still waiting for my HSBC bonus too 🙁

      • El Guapo says:

HSBC has nothing on Citi. Took me 9 months and a CFPB complaint to get my bonus after tying up 15k in one of their accounts. That included them closing the account by mistake at one point.

        • Superchurn says:

wow….i guess it’s very YMMV in general. the Citi 400 bonus went smoothly for me and wife.

some ar easy, some u actually have to work for i guess.

i just hope the CFPB doesn’t go away under Trump

  10. Cicero says:

When churning this account, there is an application question that says “* Do you currently have an M&T personal checking, savings or CD account?”

Are you all saying yes or no here?

  11. Andy says:

Once I enter the QI code, is there anywhere to confirm the code went through for the $200 bonus? Finished application and still didn’t see the $200 bonus language. Maybe I simply missed it?

  12. Jimmy says:

Anyone run into “Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. Due to the information you provided, we are unable to process your application through the online channel. For assistance, please contact us at 1-800-724-3222 or visit one of our local branches.”

I wonder what is happening that is triggering this. There are branches in my area. I did churn this bonus 5-6 times a few years ago.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Jimmy
      Check your CHEXsystems report.
Maybe there is a negative mark there.

    • Gina says:

My dad got this yesterday when trying to open an account. He clicked the link above and changed the showing info for Albany NY (the default I think?) to his current location (FL). He applied but didn’t even make it to the identity questions and received a message like this. He then opened the link incognito and left the Albany NY default and applied 30 minutes later and had no issues. I don’t know if that helps or not but that’s what happened to him. He’s never had any account with them.

    • Strema says:

I got this, too. It may be because I recently changed my address and it didn’t match my current accounts, so I’ll try again later. My husband was able to sign up under our old address and has the same number of accounts as me. Go figure.

    • Wong says:

Same issue, I left the default zip code. My address is in CA, so maybe I’m being explicitly denied. Tried Chrome/Firefox incognito also. No go

  13. Dan says:

I submitted the application with the code above and opened a checking account; there doesn’t seem to be any confirmation of the promo code working — how can I know that it did? Would you advise against calling in after the fact? Help much appreciated!

  14. Coldagglutannin says:

Has anyone gotten a phone call from m&t? Just did and they asked if I activated debit, set up DD with my employer and had any questions how to use the website. I said that I was starting a new job and had yet to set up DD. Realized this was probably not the right answer since I already triggered the bonus. Any chance they claw back (I guess I could just move those funds asap).

    • Kyle says:

They’ve called me for each account I opened, and it was always a courtesy call just to check on how things are with the new account. I wouldn’t worry about it. Actually was pretty surprising how much they cared about their new customers.

  15. dizzy says:

M&T= Money and thanks! I never even heard of this bank before these bonuses. Apparently they have a branch in “my” town (ie, my parents’ town where my address is). I feel like I missed one of these though as I’m only $550 in on the game ($750 after this one).

  16. Chris M says:

I opened my first M&T EZ Choice checking account last month for the QL $200 bonus. If I do this one, do I need to choose a different type of checking account other than EZ Choice? Does the new account show up in my online banking account right below my first account, or do I need to create a separate online account?

  17. Andrew S says:

Maybe it’s because I have a headache but I don’t see any verbiage that prohibits immediate churning? I just closed my M&T account like three days ago. Am I eligible?

  18. Matthew says:

Is anyone else having trouble opening the account online?

I did the $150 offer last year, and closed it after 6 months.
They seem to have blacklisted me or something? I’ll have to visit the branch later.

  19. Frito Pendejo says:

The application splash page now returns an error code for me. Did they finally wise up? Or just having an outage?

When I visit https://www.mtb.com/banking/checking I see a screwy page and the text DIS-222*-DIS with no working application link

  20. Frito Pendejo says:

The page is working again. However, it seems that green card holders can’t have M&T accounts opened online. Such a shame 🙁

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Frito P
      Why not?
I remember seeing a column where they ask you to input your green card number when you choose “Resident Alien”

      • Frito Pendejo says:

Yes, you can but when submitting the app it says this account can’t be opened online and to come to branch of which there are none. Perhaps she could call in.

        • JJ says:

          PSA –

Using the A-number on online app does not work
Clicking “US Citizen” and using a permanent resident SSN on online app does not work

Seem the only way for green card holders to open is in branch

  21. Raj says:

I earned $150 last month using a different code. Can I get this bonus as well?

  22. Suzy says:

Sorry, I did not see this item discussed in the offer/verdict – anyone know how long we should keep these M&T accounts open in order to avoid any clawback or similar issues?

The easiest way to avoid fees is just leave the money there and take a few bucks out every month to trigger a transaction? thanks

    • Neil says:

They have to remain open for 6 months to avoid $50 early closing fee. So I would imagine after 6 months you’re good to go to close them out.

    • There is an early account termination fee of $50, so you’ll want to keep the account open to avoid that. Yes easiest way is to take a few dollars out, or just make a debit card purchase.

      • V says:

To expand on William’s comment, you can keep the account fee-free as long as you have any activity on the account; a small deposit, or a small withdrawal or a debit card purchase. I have set up recurring transfers of $10 from my Wells Fargo account to MTB and I don’t have to do anything manually. Even the bonus was triggered by WFargo $100 ACH transfer to MTB.

        • Matt k says:

Wells Fargo worked to trigger bonus for me too. $100 from WF and $200 cash bonus posted same time. Actually, nice to use WF for the initial $25 as well since it showed the full M&T account number in the transaction activity once the $25 charge went pending. This was for my wife’s account. I used boa who x’d out portion of account number so didn’t help me. So even though my wife opened a week after I did, she got bonus first since seeing the acct number in WF activity allowed her to set up the ACH while I waited for letter in mail. Ideally I think WF initial $25 fund followed by Ally $100 ACH or anyone else not needing trial deposits would enable you to open and earn bonus within a week.

          • V says:

That interesting, I didn’t realize that WF initial funding would show the full account number, that is good to know.

Also thanks for mentioning no trial deposits, I didn’t even think that’s out there! I need to get an Ally account just for all these MTB bonuses! I have signed up multiple MTB accounts for various family members and as easy as MTB bonus is, it’s a pain to wait for trial deposits before the $100 transfer!

          • V says:

Ally does verify trial deposits before you can push ACH to other Banks. I signed up for Ally because I thought I could avoid the wait for confirming those deposits.

  23. Eileen says:

For direct deposits, do they really have to come from government/employer or will the data points on the “What banks count as DDs” post apply? Thanks!

  24. Michelle says:

Seems like M&T is competing with WF for number of new accounts opened

    • Harry says:

The big banks have the money and they give it out to those who help make their “accounts opened this quarter” numbers look good. So we help them and they help us. WF employees used to do it themselves and they got caught opening up fake accounts (read the latest news on this). At least now the accounts are being opened by real people and the wealth is being distributed instead of just staying within the bank.

BTW DP for M&T: Transfer from Santander counted as DD. Took 2 days from the time the deposti hit, but got the $250 bonus.

  25. EUGENE GARCIA says:

EZ Choice Checking has a maximum initial deposit amount of $50, but the MyChoice Plus Checking allows at least $100 initial checking deposit.

  26. TCK says:

I did my DD with capital one 360, worked! Same day as deposit the bonus posted .

  27. NBG says:

Opened my 5th Account and the bonus posted for the QI code. DD from Discover. $1K so far from MT.

  28. wendy says:

I just applied and barely remembered all the security questions. I remember seeing this mentioned somewhere on DOC site that we could get the security questions and answers somewhere…does anyone know where I can find this info? Thanks!

    • Gadget says:

There is no set list of Q&A’s, but it’s a good idea to have your full Credit Report open on another window to refer back to it. Sometimes it’s difficult to recall loan payment amounts and credit card opening dates when on the clock. Seems like some KBQ’s like to ask about relative’s now, and nearest cross street to your home, which is not something you will find on your CR. Anyway, recommend CreditKarma and/or Experian.com, aka FreeCreditScore.com

  29. john says:

the promo says you only get one payment 200 dollars regardless of the amount of accounts you open?
yet you say it’s churnable as in there is no limit to how many accounts you open ?
meaning i can do multiple accounts at the same time and get the bonus for each?
ex i do 2 ez choice and 2 my choice i can get 800 within 90 days ?

    • Multiple accounts should work as long as the promo codes are different. YMMV

    • V says:

I have had 3 EZ Choice Checking ($6.95/mo) accounts since September 2016, I have received bonuses on 2 and the 3rd is pending. You can open any account type, you don’t have to do My Choice. I’ve had my monthly fees waived with recurring transfers.

  30. Auggie N says:

Opened online with CA address and did $101 ACH push from Schwab checking. $200 bonus posted same day.

  31. denise says:

How long did you wait between opening the first and second accounts? I ask because I just got the bonus from my first (and only) account a few days ago. I am thinking to open a second account.. especially because people are reporting success. But just trying to get any info I can about whether to wait a few days or a few week, etc.

By the way, I’m surprised that you got hit with the no account number after you already had an account opened??? I got hit with that message when opening my first account. I had to call and then fax a bunch of documents and wait several days. But I figured that was because I was a new customer and they had to simply verify things once. But wait.. you already have an account with M&T.. and upon opening a second account.. they asked for this info again? hmmmmmm Just trying to clarify. Personally, I really don’t want to have to fax documents again if I do open the second account.

Any info will help me and others. Thanks!

    • Flea says:

I opened up 2 accounts x 2 accounts. As I write elsewhere here in the comments, it was a mixed bag. The first session I applied, I received account numbers for both. The second session, both account numbers were blank. As per another M&T article comment, someone was told this means the account number has to be created manually. My guess would be, this part is done locally or at least regionally, and the regions may be backed up with new account creation (I’m in tri-state NYC); but this is wholly a guess on my part; I’ve got no specific intel backing that up.

  32. LagerBack says:

I’ve been churning all of the M&T promos and wondering if people are sending in the signature cards after opening the accounts. Any ramifications if we skip on sending in the signature card?

    • andrew says:

I never sent it – have done 5 promos. No one’s said anything yet.

    • Eric says:

I always send mine in. It’s a tiny bit of a hassle to avoid possible trouble in the future.

    • Gadget says:

I always fax mine back right away. I figure the less work they have to do to setup my account, the less snags there will be. But, I also have a working fax sitting 3 feet from me.

My Wells Fargo sig card is sitting on my desk for at least a month now, because they wanted it mailed back…. debating on just stopping by a branch, or wasting a stamp. I’m secretly hoping they will close the account for me after Sirtheta made everyone feel guilty for doing a cash & dash.

      • lingua says:

lol. total +1 regarding Wells Fargo. Anyhow, what bank expects a mailer back without including return postage! or are my expectations too high…

  33. Ken says:

FWIW an M&T agent told me that the signature cards are not required if you opened your account online.

    • Flea says:

That’s very interesting, b/c I’m still waiting to find if the $250 bonus account successfully opened for me, and in connection with one of the two pending account openings I had at the time, M&T specifically sent me a snail mail letter asking me to fax/mail in a signature page (I was too lazy to check confirmation no. A against said letter B, to make sure its code dovetailed with the $250 bonus – for all I know it was the $150, which has already posted its bonus for me). In full disclosure, I have been sending my signature cards to M&T throughout the process.

In your rep’s point-of-view favor, I had a multi-CD ladder with Ally opened online, and Ally never actually asked me for any signature card, their verbiage specifically saying, IIRC, that if you have made a monetary deposit into said new Ally account online, it de facto serves the same function as you having signed something. (An interesting point of view, my guess is that they mean “since you clearly have some sort of fiduciary control over the other account which has got your name on it; we don’t really care what your signature looks like, because you’ve proven you can push money from an account with your name on it”.) YMMV, of course.

  34. Bin says:

I already had a M&T checking account and just opened a new checking account. Can you add the new checking account in the existing online banking or do you need to register the new checking account for new online banking login?

  35. John says:

my online transfer deposit with ally checking, worked! Same day as deposit the bonus posted

  36. Chereise says:

Ok, here’s a ridiculous question. I already opened one of these, then the second. I had to call M&T to get the full account number in order to set up my trial deposits for the DD.

Is calling the only way to get your full account number (and not just last 4 digits)? won’t they see that a person is just adding more accounts? I try to avoid calling whenever i can. Thanks

    • Ken says:

You can send a secure message about anything (I ask when statement closes) and then look in sent folder. Then click the message and you’ll see the full account number.

    • Stan says:

      1) Transfer between existing accounts, which will show the full account number at the transaction view.
      2) Wait a few days, and they’ll send a letter which has the account number on it.

    • LC says:

i just tried calling and the lady was very adamate that they cannot give account numbers out over the phone. Not sure why the mixed DP. could just be some poor CSR

      • Stan says:

Please stop adding work load to the CSR’s. This will for sure kill the deal.

        1) Transfer between existing accounts, which will show the full account number at the transaction view.
        2) Wait a few days, and they’ll send a letter which has the account number on it.

        • Lc says:

I obviously don’t have an account yet. Other people in here said they messaged them directly for it so not sure what the difference is?

    • Cicero says:

My account number came in a letter a few days after I opened the account.

  37. BiG says:

Stated they couldn’t use my chosen PIN for my debit card, and PIN will instead be sent through snail mail; is everyone receiving this problem?

    • Gadget says:

I had no problem setting my PIN tonight. Used the same PIN as my other M&T cards. I know some banks don’t like PIN’s like 1234, last 4 of SSN, or repeating numbers.

      • Flea says:

It was a mixed bag for me. My first accounts opened up no problem, right at the end of the account opening widget, and listed account numbers in the bargain. The second time around, I received (a) blanks on both the account numbers; (b), was not allowed to set my PIN online. I, too, attempted to use the same M&T PIN across the board.

  38. John says:

Anyone know how to link the debit card to all of the checking accounts opened? I have 3 accounts open on one login.

  39. Mark says:

Has anybody had luck reusing the same coupon code (QI) but on different accounts? I know M&T accounts are stackable as far as new codes working on separate accounts but if I were to use QI to open say an EZChoice and then a Basic Banking would they post bonuses?

  40. Ken says:

Applied QI for my wife a few days ago and then again today for me. Both times got the “We’re verifying your identity and will get back to you.” I know both times all questions were entered correctly. Didn’t even get to the funding amount page. The M&T gravy train may be losing steam.

    • MarcoPolo says:

Same thing keeps happening whenever I apply for my DW.
Last application they asked to FAX back SS card and utility bill but haven’t heard back from them. This time I tried using a VPN (so don’t use a VPN).
Maybe it’s one of the phone number questions since we had numerous phone numbers in past due to various phone deals as well as RingPlus free phone service (now defunct).
Next time I’ll try the leaving your area to default “Albany, NY” on the application page.

      • Ken says:

I did the default Albany, NY and all the Qs were answered correctly. Hopefully they approve the accounts. We don’t have a fax, but my wife can bring to work to send faxes.

We also used to have Ring+ but we’re both now on Cricket after getting a free phone on MetroPCS due to their service not working where we live.

        • Eric says:

If you have a scanner you can use FaxZero to send faxes for free. I’ve used the service a few times.

          • Ken says:

I’m always worried that the online services will record my faxes and they’re always composed of sensitive info that I don’t want getting out.

        • MarcoPolo says:

Why not buy an ObiHai device and enjoy free calls and FAX using GV?
I’m using it and it works very well.
In fact I bought another one to use as a dedicated FAX number.

          • Ken says:

Because I don’t know anything about it? 😉 My wife has a fax at work so it’s not that big of a deal to send stuff in with her on weekdays.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            @Ken
The reason I suggested that was because of your privacy concerns. If you know how fax works then you will be very concerned sending them from anywhere outside where you don’t know how they dispose off the ribbon cartridges from fax machines.
Also, it’s very easy to setup Obihai with Google voice and they provide step by step instructions on their website.

          • Ken says:

I’m only faxing signature cards without any personal info, but I get what you’re saying. She works at a public school so I doubt anyone there will try anything like this, but anything is possible.

$70 on Amazon, are they normally that much?

      • Eric says:

Did you take up Ting on their RP offer or did you go to a different carrier?

        • Ken says:

We had Ting for a month, but it was coming out to almost $30/month so we switched to MetroPCS before switching to Cricket where service is better.

    • Ken says:

Wife’s account was approved and showed up in her account Friday. I applied 2 days after her and my new account hasn’t shown up online for me and nothing received in the mail. I’ll give it a few more days, but they may have cut at least me off. I have 4 accounts and the new one makes 5, so they may have begun limiting accounts.

  41. MarcoPolo says:

Does anyone knows the current first five digits of M&T account numbers ?
It was 987291xxxx on my last account but not sure what are the current numbers since now this deal has gone public on many forums.

    • Eric says:

Which forums has it appeared on? That means it’s probably the beginning of the end of these offers. I might have to try QI sooner than I had planned.

  42. MarcoPolo says:

    To answer my own question:
It is 987292xxxx as sending a SM reveals the account number.

    • Stan says:

In order to obtain the account number:

      1) Transfer between existing accounts, which will show the full account number at the transaction view.
      2) Wait a few days, and they’ll send a letter which has the account number on it.

  43. Lou says:

A tip to pass on: I’ve opened 3 of these accounts in the past couple weeks. Since everything happened so fast with the first account, I expected the same in the second and third accounts. Not so – process going more slowly. They were still approved, just everything taking longer to happen. Suggest patience instead of calling in – calling in could kill this quickly for you and others. They may be getting slammed in volume in the past week or so.

  44. Dustin says:

DP: PNC transfer counted as a DD. As soon as the deposits hit the account, the bonus posted. Applied online and out of the qualifying state area listed.

  45. olivia says:

I applied my second EZchecking last week on Thursday. Now it’s Saturday, and I haven’t heard anything from M&T.. no e-mail, etc. I don’t see the second account showing up under my online banking for the first account.

Most people said wait 1 – 2 days before your second account appears. But for me I see nothing. I’m just worried because when I opened my first account.. I needed to fax in documentation.. and maybe for the second there may be a problem? I didn’t even know that I needed to fax in documentation for the first one until I tried calling for my account number back in March.

Also, yeah I used a VPN like I always do on the Internet.. so maybe that will trip a red flag or something. It’s stressful having to wait for these things to see what happens. Being an anxious person.. I start to worry about the worse that could happen. Maybe they even close the first account or try to claw back the first bonus.

      Read Lou’s post above.

    • Ralph says:

Has your second account shown up under your online banking yet? Been about a week for me and I still don’t see anything in online banking even though the opening deposit has been taken out of my Chase account already.

      • Ralph says:

        Replying to my own message.

I messaged M&T and inquired about it and he immediately created the account in my online account so I’m good to go.

  46. IOException says:

Anyone know if it matters which routing # you use to setup DD?

  47. TJ says:

wow – that was fast – added Ally account and did a $100 transfer. The $200 bonus posted the same day along with the original $25 opening deposit.

Thanks so much – made over $1800 this year in bank bonuses so far and waiting on $500 more to post.

  48. gina says:

It feels so random on whether you’ll get an account number after applying :(. I hate waiting a week for it to be mailed or to get the debit card to enroll online.

    • Jim says:

I have 3 brand new accounts and only learned the account number for the first one, by calling in. I do not want to call in to get the account numbers for the other too. Nothing received in the mail yet except debit cards…I have no idea what to do with the debit cards since I do not know which account they belong to.

      • Ken says:

The letter that includes the debit card says the last 4 digits of the account it’s connected to. Send a $1 transfer to one of the unknown accounts and then look in the transaction history. You’ll see the full account number.

This should probably be added to all of the M&T posts as it’s asked almost daily on each post.

  49. Ken says:

Anyone know if promo codes QT and QL are still valid? An OP on Fatwallet says QL (was updated from QL) expires on 5/24/2017. Thanks.

  50. James says:

Got the $200. Fourth bonus so far. Just did the usual $100 wells fargo ACH and bonus posted as soon as the ACH went from pending to posted.

    • Jon says:

What option do you use for the Wells Fargo transfer? I see two options: Transfer Money using the account information or Send Money using SurePay and my email address. Does either one work to count as DD?

      • James says:

Transfer. Surepay is between Wells Fargo accounts.

Transfer works as DD and triggers the bonus as soon as it goes from pending to posted

  51. Elver says:

how does the DD post on your account? I did my funding from Navy Federal and other DPs suggested initial deposit counts as DD but mine is showing up as “M&T BANK ONLINE DEP”

    • Patti says:

Besides the initial funding sent to set up the account, at least $100 needs to be pushed into your new M&T account, as if it were a direct deposit, like a paycheck. So try an account that allows easy bank to bank transfers and push from that account. Once M&T receives it, you will see the deposit in your M&T account as pending. Once it officially posts to your account, your bonus will post also. Bonus is available immediately, no pending status.

Can accounts be easily closed via secure message?

    • Patti says:

Yes. I did it in early December with no problems.

    • Gadget says:

Yes, SM works to close an account if you have multiple accounts, but once you get down to the last account, they want to charge a $4 closing fee and a snail mail letter if you cannot go to a branch. But, for most of us, that is going to be 6 months from now, and by then, they might have new promo’s. Or by then, they may be charging fees for plenty of things to recoup their losses. I can’t believe this is still alive.

      • Patti says:

This was not my experience in Dec for an account I opened last June.
I had 1 account and closed it by SM.

        • Gadget says:

Maybe your CSR was feeling generous, or mine was not. I got this msg via SM when closing my second and what was my final account from last year:

“I am sorry to hear you will no longer be banking with us. You may close your account by visiting your local M&T branch or by mail. To process this request, your signature is required and bringing the account to a zero balance will not automatically close it.

If you are unable to visit an M&T Bank branch, please send your signed request to the following address.

          M&T Bank
          PO Box 1258
          Buffalo, NY 14240

As your account has been open less than 180 days, we will assess a $50.00 account closing fee. Additionally, a $4.00 mail closing fee will be assessed.”

          • Patti says:

Perhaps they make it difficult when closing <6 months after opening. We closed ours after 6 months and it was a non issue.
This was before I knew people could keep signing up for multiple offers. Back then I was thrilled to get $150 one time.

@MarcoPolo I’ve done 5 in one month. Errored out on #4 but at the 2 week mark from opening my first account I was able to successfully open #4 and a day later #5 (used incognito mode in my browser, no idea if that helped).

    Thanks DoC!

  61. NoonRadar says:

So it seems when you apply for 2+ accounts they show up on the original login after a couple of days?

Does registering for the subsequent accounts speeds this up in any way, or does it just redirect you to the existing login?

    • MoreSun says:

Accounts #2 & 3 showed up on my already established login, but they didn’t show up until a day or two after initial funding was pulled from my account, which was a couple days after approval. I’d give it a week to pop up in your current account.

    • NBG says:

If u already have a established account/login, try this.
When signing up the next account if you mention you already have a account and provide account#, make sure to click the enroll now in step @ section(it’s in the bottom) link in the last confirmation page where it shows the account#. This will open a blank confirmation page. All it does is link the new account to your existing account login. Give it a few minutes, then login, the new account will show up.

Do we know yet if we can use expired M&T codes (QM, QF, QK for example) and the bonus still pay out? I’ve only used valid codes one time up until this point, and only one bonus per code, but I’m looking to possibly expand. Looking for multiple DPs here…

    • Gary says:

Do you know what the bonuses are for QM, QF and QK codes? When did they supposedly expire? Thanks for all the comments. This bonus is unbelievably easy, quick and repeatable. I expect someone may suffer some severe heat for this at the bank.

      • Robert says:

        QE – $150 – ended 4/3/15
        QF – $200 – ended 9/23/16
        QG – $200 – ended 9/23/16
        QJ – $200 – ended 9/12/15
        QK – $200 – ended 3/25/17
        QM – $150 – ended 2/28/17
        QO – $250 – ended 3/31/17 (Premium)
QL – $200 – still valid, ends 5/24/17, per doc article edit

        • Ken says:

This isn’t accurate. These are the current promos that I have yet to do:

          QE – $150 (5/24/17)
          QC – $150 (6/30/17)
          QD – $150 (6/30/17)

          • Robert says:

You’re correct. My list was not comprehensive and did not include most current offerings. QE promotion was recently re-initiated.

  66. Saturn says:

Technically this note belongs under the QL bonus, but that one is about to expire, and they are essentially the same.

QL is my 2nd EZ choice account after QI, opened May 6. New account number showed at the end of the sign-up. I kept looking for it to appear after logging into my 1st account. Today, May 15, it shows.

I can confirm others’ experience that accounts will be merged after about a week. Be patient.

  67. Patti says:

I applied for this promo late last night. This is offer #4 since late Feb so averaging 1 per month.
After answering the security questions I got the response about needing to verify my info and that I’d get an answer in 3 days or so.
When I came home from work, my new account appeared in my log in. By tomorrow or Thurs I should be able to confirm this as a linked account with Cap One 360, have the dd pushed by Friday and the bonus on Saturday.
    Sweet, sweet, sweet.
I will do this for dh tonight.

I’ve read how people successfully apply for multiple accounts in one week but I prefer to not raise any flags with the bank. This is just too good to lose. I’m hoping they extend the QL bonus beyond 5.24.17.
Maybe by the time I get to my 6th or 7th account I can start closing the older ones. I’m afraid to have like 12 all open at once

  68. Dave P says:

DP – Just confirming that a push from a Santander account did count as my DD for M&T.
    Thanks, Doc!

  69. seespotjump says:

Push from Chase to EZChoice Checking posted on 5/16, bonus posted the same day. Initial deposit also posted on 5/16.

    On to the next one!

  70. Saturn says:

Tardy DP: Wells Fargo push of $ 100 has triggered the bonus (twice).

  71. Darv says:

My application for a third account was blocked today, the message was I needed to call a number or visit a branch. I didn’t get to identity verification questions. I tried opening the third, eight days after the second.

I must say I am shocked at this situation with M&T and the bonuses. The only logical thing that makes sense in this situation is if M&T wants to juke the stats in case they are angling to get bought out, as in a pending deal, and they want spiked stats.

Otherwise, this makes absolutely no sense. The strange thing is that their website and application system are very good–particularly their application system. Combined they put most of the biggest banks to shame in these two respects. What I’m getting at is, they seem to have their stuff together. How can they have such poor controls in another aspect of their business? I’ll admit I am new to these bonuses as I disregarded them since DoC never put them under nationwide; I generally ignore anything state-specific that isn’t mine. But I’ve been reading the threads here and elsewhere, and clearly people have been hammering them for a while now. For the Wells $250 promotion, I estimated their losses at over $100 million from the one promotion (estimated number of patrons to forums like this times $250).

M&T’s losses could easily be as much or substantially higher. So it’s stunning to me this is allowed to continue. It’s either 1) one of the worst examples of internal controls we’ve seen in this environment, or 2) they want to juke the stats on their new accounts. Further, M&T is a fraction the size of Wells. I don’t see how they haven’t noticed this by now.

    • JW says:

In terms of DP, how long did you wait to open your second? You took 8 days to open the third but wondering how soon can one open a second? Would a day or 2 suffice? About to run out of time

  72. Ken says:

@Darv – Promotional bonuses aren’t losses in the traditional sense. They’re likely reported as marketing/advertising expenses that they can write them off to lower their taxable income. So, yes, they are spending money, but it’s not as bad as it seems. M&T is very profitable so they can afford to do this.

    • Darv says:

No, they can’t afford to do this. Sure, their other profits will cover these losses, but these promotions are investments toward future business intended to be profitable. These aren’t just give-aways that M&T is willing to live with. Ultimately it does not matter if they come out of a marketing budget or some other budget, it all hits the bottom line. Somebody in their marketing team is going to get fired over this, unless as I said they are deliberately juking their stats (in hopes of appearing better to would-be merger suitors).

Tax write-offs are good, yes, but not just for the sake of having write-offs. These are still huge losses without any justification. If they want long-term customers they need to add incentives for keeping the accounts, stickyness. These promotions are far too prone to what they would probably interpret as abuse. Not illegal, not fraudulent by those applying or receiving bonuses, but abusive in nature from their perspective.

      • Ken says:

How do you know if they can’t afford to do this? I don’t know if they can, and we’re not privy to their books so this is all speculation.

        • Darv says:

Looking at their most recent financial results, for the most recent quarter they made $331 million. So maybe they made a billion over a year. All right. Like I said, it’s well within the possibility that they will lose $100 million on this one campaign. That would be 10% of their annual profits on a personal checking promotion, a business that is undoubtedly much less profitable than their loans or other product lines. And again, that’s assuming they get a return on their investment. They will get little to no return on the customers they are drawing, or from 99% of the bonuses paid.

So can they afford this? Technically, yes, of course they can. Was this in any way a responsible marketing campaign or otherwise best use of the bank’s resources or their shareholder’s money? Absolutely not.

There is no way to sugar coat this. Unless they have a partner bidding on them and they want stats to look good.

          • Ken says:

I think it’s a bad idea too, hemorrhaging money is never a good idea. If you read the terms pretty much all of us wouldn’t be able to get the bonus. So somebody in IT chose not to enforce the terms or was never told to do so. Either way you’re right, and heads are going to roll.

          • Steve F says:

OR, maybe they are padding their reserve balance hoping that people will just keep the money in their accounts so then they have a higher reserve which allows them to loan out more money (create new money out of thin air). Rest assured, they ARE making money off giving out these bonuses one way or another. Maybe they have decided to gamble on them making more than the bonuses cost them.

          • Eric says:

            Steve,

If that was the case they would require higher than a $100 DD and they would require us to leave a large balance for a long period of time.

Rest assured M&T is losing a LOT of money on these promos. It’s all relative though as I’ve read from comments here that they are making good money so this may be a blip on the radar to them.

How long will that continue though?

  73. Charles S. says:

    DP:

5/8 – Opened account with $25 check mailed in
    5/19 – CapOne 360 transfer of $105
    5/20 – $200 bonus posted to account

This is my first M&T account. I will try for another one in June (after opening a targeted BMO $300 next)

    • Saturn says:

Why wait? You have 4 days left to use the QI (all letters) code for another 200. Put off the BMO. Once you have 2 MTB accounts you can transfer funds internally. This apparently qualifies for the required monthly transaction.

      • JW says:

Just opened the $250 one but noting that the $200 is about to expire too. Is it okay to open a second account on the same day barely 2 hours ago since my last account? Or would you recommend wait at least a day or two after my first account. Don’t want to wait.

    • Saturn says:

      Correction: QL (instead of QI)

I’m getting as confused as M&T…

      • Charles S. says:

I forgot about the QL. I guess I am a bit wary of going for too many checking openings in a short time. This was #5 in the last 45 days. All I need is BMO to say nope, you have too many.

        • JW says:

Confused, how is this related to BMO? You meant that if you open too many MT account then BMO would turn you down for a new account? Thought BMO not very sensitive.

          • V says:

I think he might be talking about linking too many new (M&T) accounts to his existing BMO account. I also had that concern about my primary bank (unfortunately Wells Fargo), so I opened an ally bank account for all these new bank account transfers. I have a lot of things set up with my primary WF account so I did not want to lose that relationship in case they flag my account as suspicious because of a dozen external accounts.

That said, I searched online for shutdowns due to too many accounts but I couldn’t find people talking about that. I did find out that some people had 15-20+ accounts linked to ally and were complaining that they were unable to link more accounts.

          • Charles S. says:

Actually JW is correct. I am a bit more conservative with these bonuses, especially with M&T multiple accounts. I would rather get $300 from BMO than a $200 from M&T. I know I know, they probably would both go thru. Just not as aggressive as some here I guess.

    M&T Bank Routing Numbers:
022000046 – New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

052000113 – Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and DC.

  77. Jay says:

Tried to open an account yesterday and didn’t know you could bypass the initial deposit page. Exited my application at that point. Then I tried to apply a second time and was denied because I failed my identity verification questions (they did not seem to apply to me). Then every time I try to apply I get the message to call in or visit in branch before I can even get back to the verification messages. Only issue is that the branch in my area (AZ) is a mortgage office and has no bank functions. Calling them to open an account doesn’t work since they say they don’t open bank accounts on the phone any more, that I’m outside of their area and apparently locked out of opening an account for the next 30 days. Feel like I just screwed myself over out of most of these bonuses…

    • ajpl says:

What makes you think you’re locked out for 30 days? Did someone tell you this specifically?

    • ajpl says:

Nevermind, read too fast. When you were on the phone, did they tell you specifically that the 30-day lockout was because you failed ID verification questions?

      • Jay says:

No. Apparently the CSR I spoke to couldn’t figure out the initial reason I was locked out (I already know it was the failed identity questions). He did say that afterwards it was due to applying too much since I tried a few times to see if it would work eventually. And he told me that I’ll be locked out of applying for the next 30 days. Don’t know if it’s a rolling period from the initial lockout or if additional application failures extend those 30 days. Sucks…

        • ajpl says:

Anecdotally, I’d guess that the additional app failures extended the 30 days. I failed ID verification, waited two weeks, and then got “could not open” before even getting to ID verification. Waited another two weeks after that (now more than 30 days from the initial ID verification failure) and had the same thing happen again.

Going to give it a solid 30 days with no apps this time. Will report back.

  78. Saturn says:

Hiccup with the account I opened for/with my son on 5/14 . We had to choose funding by check, but everything worked. The only thing missing was the account number. I mailed off the check on 5/16 and it cleared, the debit card arrived 5/20, followed by the PIN notice a few days later. This one surprised me, in fact, because I had selected our own PIN in the app.

Online enrollment has not been possible, and today a long time on the phone with various departments has not borne any fruit. They cannot explain the enrollment failure, we did not go into the fact that there is no branch nearby, they don’t give out account numbers over the phone. This means we will have to wait until the first statement arrives in the mail to try and enroll again with the account number in hand.

Now I hypothesize that my repeated attempts to enroll with the PIN I selected before their PIN letter arrived have blocked the card. Maybe our PIN did not register because the account had not been created yet. We will have to be patient for another 3 weeks now. Others here may be advised: If you do not have all your details and enrollment fails when you assume it should not, don’t rush it.

    • Patti says:

“This means we will have to wait until the first statement arrives in the mail to try and enroll again with the account number in hand.”

Not necessarily. If your son already has another M&T account, this new account will eventually show up there in his log in. Transferring money from the old account to the new account will make the account # show up in the list of transactions of the old account.

If he’s a new customer, I think you’ll need his account # to create a log in. IIRC.

  79. zalmy says:

DP: Chase checking account ACH push, bonus posted later that day (code QL)

    • Yaz says:

Same here, used the same code QL. So fast. Opened my account on Sunday 5/21, Chase ACH finally hit 5/25 and woke up 5/26 to see the bonus had posted on 5/25 same day.

  80. Pat says:

QUESTION: Anyone know how strict those expiration dates are? I see a few unfortunately expired on May 24th (including this one)

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Pat
If you do not already have lot of open accounts then maybe it’s worthwhile to try and hope for the best.
However, if you already have many open account then it’s better to wait for the next code.

    • Ken says:

And if you do use an expired code for whatever reason do not contact the bank asking about the bonus since technically you should not be receiving it. Rule #1 of bank churning…

    • Patti says:

I don’t think I’d take the chance. At least with M&T there’s usually another unexpired code to go for instead. There is no harm in trying except that it’s another opened account on your Chex report but potentially no bonus.

  81. Pablo says:

For the EZChoice Checking account monthly waiver which requires 1 transaction to be posted (whether its a deposit/withdrawal, etc), do you guys know if transferring $1 between M&T accounts will meet this monthly fee waiver requirement? If so, then I can technically just kill 2 birds with one stone and make it easier for me instead of having to do 2 incoming external transfers.

    Thanks!

Yes Pablo, This absolutely works and it’s instant and so easy.
I have moved less than $1. As long as there is SOME transaction occurring.

I transferred over $100 from my Chase checking. For some reason it automatically transferred back.
I’ve tried this twice with the same results.
    Any advice?

Has anyone tried to apply for an account with an expired promo code? And did you receive the bonus?

Given how little checking M&T seems to do on their ap process I was wondering if anyone had tried this.

Also, what are the promo codes for non-expired applications?

I entered QI by mistake after its expiration date. Did the usual, bonus posted after clearing WF ACH.
