The Fine Print

  • This offer is only valid for customers who purchase their Metro North or LIRR ticket in the MTA eTix app using an eligible Chase or J.P. Morgan Visa debit or credit card enrolled in Apple Pay.
  • Ticket must be purchased between 12:01 AM on 12/1/2016 and 11:59 PM on 1/1/2017.
  • Any ticket type is eligible, including one way, round trip, CityTicket, weekly, ten trip and monthly.

  • Tickets refunded within 5 minutes of the ticket purchase are ineligible for the statement credit. Tickets refunded after 5 minutes and charged a $10 refund fee by the MTA are ineligible for the statement credit.
  • Please allow 4 to 6 weeks after the qualifying purchase posts to your account for the statement credit to post to your account.
  • Purchases are when you, or an authorized user, use a card to make purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds.
  • Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won’t count and won’t earn Rewards points: balance transfers, cash advances, travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers or similar cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable.

Our Verdict

For those who use the MetroNorth or LIRR, this is basically a free $30 credit there for the hassle of making a $30 payment with a Chase card using Apple Pay.

This deal only works for one transaction, so make sure to buy a ticket price of more than $30. I imagine you can buy a few smaller tickets in a single transaction which cost $30 combined and get the full $30 back.

Chase just gave me a ridiculous reason as to why I did not receive the credit – they said that because I made a physical train ticket purchase during the promotion period, my e-ticket of $35 did not count. Of course I called them out on their BS and now I am waiting to hear if they will offer a solution. Was planning to get this for my wife as well but it is really discouraging to see how much companies are trying to weasel out of holding up their end.

I received the $30 credit (on the Chase credit card account) today (12/9) for a MetroNorth railroad purchase on 12/4. Thank you for publicising this offer.

Any way to do this without owning anything Apple? I can’t imagine any but this would be a great discount for New Haven to GCT.

Borrow a friend/family member’s phone, add your chase card, do the transaction, remove your card from friend/family’s phone, reap benefits.

Not sure, don’t see anything about this in the fine print but I imagine it’s one per person – could be wrong though.
