The Offer

Direct Link

  • Buy American Express gift cards with no purchase fee this week at Office Depot/Max

screen-shot-2016-12-04-at-6-08-28-pm

The Fine Print

  • Valid 12/4 – 12/10
  • In-store only
  • Limit 2 per household/business

Our Verdict

The limit-two is a bummer, but it should be possible to do more with multiple visits or a nice cashier. I wonder if the system will enforce the limit-2 or if it will be up to the cashier.

Nice way of locking in 5x UR everywhere by buying up Amex gift cards with INK and spending it down on regular Spend. Another option is to unload by paying your mortgage or other bills with Plastiq or pay your rent with other processors; these options do cost money, though.

Update: judging from the comments to this post it appears that the $500 cards are cash-only while the $200 cards can be purchased with credit.

Here in GA, cash only. At first I tried to purchase 2 $200 then tried with just 1 $200 but no luck .

The system said that for me too when I tried to get the variable rate cards. Cashier tried the $200 ones, and the cash only notice didn’t appear for those.

I was thinking that to be another option. I’ll try that and thank you.

CVS was offering the same fee free Amex gift cards the past few days. A great way to complete the 4th quarter Freedom drugstore category.

All local Office Depot/max stores in my area are cash only for VGC and Amex Gift card since 6 months ago. Fortunately, I just bought 8K of no-fee Amex gift card from CVS during the past two weeks. My wife have spent 3.5 K on shopping already.

If she keeps that rate up, it may be time to churn the wife!

What bonus did you get for the 8k of AGC from CVS?
I thought Freedom 5x was capped at 1.5k. Or do you have multiple Freedom cards?

heard that AGC can be used at OD/OM to pay for VGC; anyone successfully did it?

Even if it’s possible- that would be an awful deal, as you’re paying $6.95 and liquidating just $200- a fee of 3.5%.

At CVS, you pay just $4.95 for a $500 VGC, a fee of just 1%.

Which CC is beneficial for CVS purchases?

It’s irrelevant- his question was about liquidating Amex GC 😉

forgot to add to my previous question that to do this when OD/OM had earlier offered $15 instant rebate; someone stated that AGC can be liquidated that way at OD; just curious if it’s YMMV or all

@Doc- A far easier way to cash these out than the ones you mentioned- and cheaper, too- is to just buy VGC at CVS…

I saw this offer while in OM earlier today and added two to my purchase. For the first time ever, a pop up appeared on the cashier’s screen at checkout. It was the first time he had seen it and he seemed confused. He turned the screen to face me and read aloud…cash only for the $400 in AmEx cards…he called the manager who confirmed the notice. Never had an issue before….

rather have this than Visa 5% back. nice! 5x everywhere!

why? the Visa 5% Back’s can be used anywhere, not just at the stores that give 5% back. So, you can buy them for 5X-Everywhere Spending, as more places take Visa than Amex. Also: they’re metabank debits with PINs, so you can liquidate them

many stores dont have Visa 5 back at office for u to get 5x. u have to stick with AGC if they even let u buy using a CC…
