Recap: Basic Economy Fares, Bad News For Bank Points & More

  • United is Now Selling Basic Economy. How They’re Describing It Makes My Blood Boil by View From The Wing. I’ve always seen basic economy as these legacy carries selling goodwill in the brand, they will surely lose some of that goodwill & prestige by offering these fares to consumers who don’t understand exactly what they are buying. Personally if I’m going to choose a low cost fare, I’m going to fly a low cost airline because they are significantly cheaper than these basic economy fares.
  • Basic Economy Is Bad News For Bank Points by Travel Codex. These fares are still relatively new, I imagine that warnings will be added as the number of complaints from people that actually fly these fares ramps up (still awful for those people not to be properly warned). My bigger concern is not having the ability to avoid these fares.

I’m genuinely concerned with the value of my almost 200k UR points, I very often use them to transfer to United. I hope they add an option to search for regular economy.

Does having the Mileageplus Explorer help? I saw an asterisk on that, seems it allows you a small carry on.

My biggest concern with Economy Basic is that they will shift all the low level rewards to that category essentially further degrading the collection of airline miles.
