Having used airbnb since 2013 and stays over 28 days multiple times, the gift card 10% is not a good deal. If you stay past 28 days many hosts offer a 50% discount or more (2 free weeks, especially for new hosts looking for reviews). I have a host cancel between 1 week of arrival and within 24 hours. Gift cards only compound refund issues and if youre host cancels airbnb automatically gives you a 10% discount. Youre better off using a cc that offers travel redemption (arrivial+,venture etc) Don’t put all ur eggs in one basket with airbnb gift cards, they usually give away courtasy coupons for $25….also the referral link and promo is only for stays over $75.
Yeah, I’m pretty much done with Airbnb. I’m sick of being rejected by hosts for no particular reason and then the anxiety of not knowing whether they’ll cancel on you at the least minute. But the kicker was that Airbnb send me a threatening message because I bought a giftcard on ebay and that if I did it again they’d shut me down.
Bought an airbnb gift card from ebay (applied directly to my airbnb account through airbnb portal), and made a reservation A MONTH in advance. The day before the trip, airbnb sends me an email saying the gift card is not transferable, hence invalid, and I’d have to use another form of payment if I wanted to keep my reservation. Email also warned me not to do that again, or they’d shut me down.I contacted them by phone, but was of no help. The guy literally said.” I don’t know what to tell you”. The supervisor was of no help either, and I was told someone would reach out to me. which they never did.
The gift card was protected by ebay buyer protection, and after a month of pursuit, I ultimately got my money back. However, the stress I was put under right before my trip, I will never forget.
I per-emptied their threat of shutting me, and shut them down instead. I closed my account.
Buying airbnb gift card is not smart ,imo. Why would you want to be held hostage with the gift card? I’d rather focus on getting discount in some other method, and maintain flexibility of my money by using other forms of payment.
