Reminder: Last Chance to Get Citi Bonuses Under the Old Rules

Citi changed the rules to combine all credit cards within the same family of cards to be considered together for the purposes of signup bonuses.

Going forward, you can only get one bonus each 24-months on all ThankYou cards combined, one bonus each 24-months on all Citi American Airlines cards combined, one bonus each 24-months on all Expedia cards combined, and one bonus each 24-months on all Hilton cards combined.

Always remember that the 24-months resets even when you close a card. Whether a product change is considered ‘closing’ a card is a gray area, and we haven’t been successful at getting an official reply from Citi to that question.

These new terms go into effect on August 28th, according to Citi’s media team. That leaves us three days (25th, 26th, and 27th) to apply for Citi cards under the old rules.

If you recently opened or closed a Citi card, it could be a good idea to try getting in on another bonus for a card in the same family even if it’s not at its best, e.g. get the Prestige at 40k bonus if you recently closed your Premier. However, if it’s been a long while since you’ve opened or closed a Citi card, it might be a better idea to wait some time until you’re in the clear and get the best bonus.

For a more detailed look at the available bonus options, see Best Citi Sign Up Bonuses & Strategy To Use Before New Rules Go Into Place. Also see Strategies For Dealing With Citi’s New Application Rule for a look at how to strategically apply for Citi cards going forward.

Prestige Benefits

On another note, you may recall that the benefits on Citi Prestige are diminishing starting July 23, 2017, including Admirals Club access, free golf, the 1.6 cent point redemption, and some changes to the 4th night benefit.

Most of these changes go into effect on July 23, 2017, irrespective of when you apply for the Prestige card. The one exception is Admirals Club access: those who apply before September 1, 2016, will get the benefit until July 23, 2017. But those who apply from September 1, 2016 and on won’t get club access at all from the get-go.

  • Apply now through August 31 and get all benefits that existing cardholders get. All benefit changes will take place on 7/23/17.
  • Apply from September 1, 2016 onward and get all the old benefits until July 23, 2017, with the exception of Admirals access. You won’t have Admirals access at all on the card.

Applied for the executive card 7/7, and didn’t get signups bonus. They attached business app /cancellation rule, and it appears to be retroactive. Any thoughts on how to get citi to reconsider?

I assume you applied after the rule change and already had an AA card open or closed within last 24 months?

Hi Charles, yes i missed it, yikes!!!!!!!

But wait, aren’t personal and business cards different products?

So cannot i still apply for cit AA personal and Citi AA Business cards now/same day since business cards are different products as mentioned by someone in a similar Citi post here?

Hi Guyz, Just reading this post….am travelling, in India currently for business trip….Owing to deadline of 8/28, can you answer my question immediately?

Are Personal and Business cards different?

I do not have any AA Cards yet. How many can i apply for before 8/28?

1) Can i apply for Personal AA and Business AA card today (same day) and get bonus or do i have to wait 8 days between 2 cards application? In that case 8/28 will come and i will not get both bonuses.

2) Any option to apply for Gold card too? However 25k Bonus seems too meager to apply. Any suggestions?

What are my best options?

Apology if this question has been asked before…….but would be thankful if addressed ASAP.

I think you’ve missed the deadline on 8/28, it’s well past that now.

1. You can get both cards same day, but now you’ll be restricted to whatever terms the offer says.
2. Yes you could have applied for gold as well, but now you will be restricted to one per family.

Currently holding a few AA Plat cards with low CL’s. Today, I applied for AA Gold using the FT link which has the AA family language. It went to pending. I called right away. Long wait. Rep said their call volume was high (of course.) After holding for 4 mins and 7 mins more, it was denied! First time being rejected by Citi. Ouch! My last AA was approved late July and I also closed an old AA at the same time. That probably didn’t help.

If I apply today and it goes pending, are the old rules enforced based on application date or approval date?

I applied for a AA gold on 8/27, went to recon, called in and was approved. Then on 8/28 I received a ‘you’re approved email’.

Received my card in the mail saying I wasn’t eligible for a bonus on my account.

My dumb self didn’t save the offer page so I guess I’m out 25000 miles :/

Personal decision – worth $160 at best, $100 a minimum. I wouldn’t do it but to each their own!
