Our Verdict
Virgin America/Alaska have been launching their own sales whenever Southwest holds one, meaning lower fares for everybody (yay competition). I like to post the Southwest sales as the award tickets are tied to the cash value of each ticket. If you book anything, let us know in the comments.
WN “sales” are just announced repricings which may or may not be temporary. For instance, LAX-LAS midweek has been $29-$39 for some time, to compete with Spirit which regularly has $19-$39 fares on the corridor. On the other hand, Alaska and Virgin’s “sales” are more likely to be sales which will go up after the period is over. Use the low fare calendar to see if it’s a real sale. If it is, the price would go up immediately after the sale period.
I depend on skipedlagged.com not only to find hidden-city bargains but also to see fare history. (use it 1-way only).
Absolutely amazing gem. Where I always look up fares.
Weird. An Alaska fare Im looking at is $64 cash or 12.5k mi. Whats up with that??
What do you mean?
Alaska miles should be worth way more than that. That’s a 0.512cpp redemption
Was looking at LAX-LAS
Yeah, miles are never going to be worth much on extremely low value sale fares.
Alaska awards are chart-based, not a constant $ amount like Southwest and JetBlue.
You’d be paying the same 12.K whether it was a short hop or trans-continential.
Ah, I see. Thanks for that (Im not much of a traveler as you can tell)
Can someone explain the reasoning behind these sales? Or the logic? I’m confused.
I fly Southwest almost every month and have a companion pass with them. I regularly check the cost for flights I’ve already booked, hoping to get some points returned to me in the process.
Southwest “sales” are so subjective that these sales never make much sense to me. Often times, I’ll see a “sale” from Lax starting from $49, but I can regularly find lax-las for $39.
The same thing happens in reverse, sometimes there is no sale posted at all, but I’m able to find incredible deals from LAX-ORD for example at ridiculously low rates.
So ultimately, my questions has and always will be, if the sales are just marketing fluff- why post them on here? At the end of the day, I have been unable to find a correlation between lower fares and “sales”
I think it depends on the route, in the past readers have reported finding cheaper fares so that’s why I post them. If that isn’t the case, I’ll stop posting them.
I don’t see a correlation or even understand the “sale” to be honest. From my experience, there’s no true sale. In fact, most of the lower rates I find happen to be during “regular” pricing.
Completely agree Alex..
Ok, I’ll keep this in mind and try to do some further research
Just because you don’t see lower fares on your primary routes doesn’t mean other aren’t finding lower fares. I’ve saved 2k and 5k on re-booked flights from past posts of SW sales.
Now I don’t check the fair every single day so I can’t say with 100% certainty that the fare was *never* below the sale price but these posts have saved me RRs in the past.
I think I can say with reasonably certainty if you were to check everyday like I do you would find lower fares on a regular basis.
