Our Verdict
The $200/$100 bonuses are the standard offers from Suntrust, what is new is the extra $50 savings bonus. The $200 checking bonus is well worth doing, so if you haven’t done that I’d highly recommend it. Let’s work out if it’s worth doing the saving bonus or not. You’re required to deposit $5,000 and keep it in there for 60 days, if you put that same money into a 1% account you’d earn ~$8.3, but if you put it into a 5% account you’d earn ~$41.6. The other thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to keep $1,000 in that account to keep it fee free (and to avoid the early account termination fee).

Personally I don’t think the savings bonus makes sense, better to make use of a 5% account instead as that’s more of a long term solution. If you’ve already maxed those out, it might be worth a look though. I’ve added this to our list of the best bank bonuses, because as I stated the checking $200 bonus is well worth doing.

Another PayPal data point confirmation here.
Took a little over 4 weeks to finally get this status, but worked for me.

Just applied and was able to successfully complete application using $1000 in CC funding. Charge has not posted yet, but at least there was no halt in the online application process. Will update once charge posts (or doesn’t).
Promo has been extended through July 31, 2016, per statement on SunTrust website (from your “Direct link to offer” link).
I had the same experience as Dan- the system kicked me out, and when I called I was told I could only do CC funding of $100…bummer! Oh well, I’ll update how it posts on my Chase United card.
Just want to add a potential data point: They only allowed me an initial CC funding of $100 for the Select Checking account. Although I was kicked out of the application session for some reason after getting the accounts approved and had to talk to customer service. I will update with how the transaction posts to chase when it does.

any data points out there that confirm downgrading from select checking to essential checking doesn’t lead to a bonus clawback post-60 days but pre-6 months?
I’m wondering the same – if you try, let us know the result!
So we can withdraw all the money and close the account after the bonus posts and just pay the $25 early termination fee?
I have tried four different things so far and nothing has triggered the bonus, but the account hasn’t been open long. I’ll report back if things work out.
I was able to secure the bonus—it posted on June 1 after about six weeks.
I tried three different DD attempts and am not sure which worked: Ally, Capital One, or Fidelity.
Thanks for the post and the hat tip, Will!
Are there any more recent data points on the DD triggers? The data points from the link in the description are quite old, and I see there are rumors of paycheck stub verification. Not sure what the latest status on any of that is, so if there are more data points, I’m curious to see what they are.

Online application is unable to be completed.
Has anyone been able to complete the online application? I haven’t had any luck either.
I figured it out for myself. The online application does not work in Firefox. I tried it in Chrome and it worked fine.
