[Targeted] 10,000 Membership Rewards Points for Opting-In to Extended-Payment

The Offer

From time-to-time Amex targets some people with an offer to get bonus Membership Rewards points for enrolling in their extended payment option. Many people are getting this offer now via email.

  • Get 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you enroll your card for the extended payment option
  • Manyddddddd reports indicate that no hard pull is done when enrolling in the pay-over-time option

The difference between a credit card (Blue Cash, Everyday, SPG, etc.) and a charge card (Platinum, Green, Gold, etc.) is that credit cards offer the option to pay the balance over time while charge cards do not. Amex offers us to enroll for the pay-over-time option on charge cards, essentially converting the charge card into a credit card.

Most people should have the option to enroll in pay-over-time, but only select people will see the 10,000 bonus offer. And only on charge cards. You may even be offered 10k for each card charge card separately.

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid through August 15, 2016
  • Points will be credited to your account within 6-8 weeks after enrollment is approved (the points typically post within a few days)

Our Verdict

Easy way to rack up 10k Membership Rewards points, it surprises me that they offer so much for a simple act of enrolling.

When these offers come around via email, I believe they show up in the Amex login as well. Check your email and all Amex logins to see if you got this offer as people who get the offer will often see it on more than one account. You can enroll each account for a separate bonus.

We don’t recommend that anyone actually use the pay-over-time option as it will incur high interest fees. You get the bonus simply for enrolling even if you don’t carry any balance.

Update: We elaborated more on how to get yourself targeted for this 10,000 bonus offer in this dedicated post.

Data point: the 10000 points posted to my account just two days after enrolling! I was already able to transfer them to a partner airline and redeem them for an upcoming flight

So the email I got referenced my gold card – but when I logged on from the link it asked me which card I wanted to enroll it for and gave me 3 options (Platinum, Gold and Green). I picked the Gold because of it being specifically referenced in the email – BUT….anyone know if I link back in and choose one of the other 2, will I get 10k for each of those as well? I’m tempted, but also don’t want to enroll those in case i get targeted for those in the future. I guess what I’m asking is – did those that were targeted on multiple cards get separate emails?

Same question here as well.

I got one e-mail. When I clicked the link, two cards showed up, and it asked which I wanted to use. I used the one that was referred to in the e-mail. Enrolled successfully, and the points have posted. Then I went back to the e-mail, clicked the other card, and it said “sorry, this offer not available.” YMMV of course.

Thanks for the replies. Decided to try it for both. Here were the results:

Platinum – “We’re sorry, none of your enrolled Cards is eligible for the Extended Payment Option.”

Green – “We’re sorry, either your Membership Rewards® points offer has expired or this offer is only available to Card Members who have received a communication directly from American Express for this offer.”

Neither response makes sense – clearly my Gold was eligible, the offer extends until Aug 15 and I DID get direct communication. Perhaps I’ll try a ‘chat’ with a CSR to get it for the Green card.

Also, the Green did give me the option to enroll (Platinum did not) – but I assume it would be w/out the 10k point offer being applied.

I got the offer, I’ll be signing up. I’ve had my Plat for about 8 months now. My wife signed up for her Plat a couple months ago (the most recent 100K offer) and didnt’ get the email.

Have a Business Gold Rewards card, tried the link, got this message “The Pay Over Time information is applicable to Consumer Charge Cards only.” Seems to me like that implies it’s not for business charge cards. Just closed my PRG two weeks ago too…

If you don’t see yourself targeted via email or on the website you can always call and ask if you’re targeted, has worked for me before.

Does anyone know if this would result in your charge card counting against the credit card limit that Amex has per person (4)?

I would think not because it’s not a new card.
