Can I Product Change To One Of These New Cards If I’m An Existing American Express Cardholder?

Current JetBlue Card from American Express customers whose accounts are converted to the new JetBlue Rewards Card on March 21 will have the option to change to one of the new cards. You’ll need to call to request a product change & Barclaycard does not do a hard pull for product changes. You’ll be able to request this product change when those product conversions officially go through on or after 6 a.m.ET, March 21, 2016.

How Much Are JetBlue Points Worth?

Redemption of JetBlue points are tied to the cash value of a ticket and other factors. The range you can get is between 0.97¢ and 1.89¢ per point, with an average of 1.41¢ per point. Wandering Armean has a good post (although a bit dated now, the information itself is still spot on from my limited research) that I’d strongly recommend reading to understand better.

What Does Mosaic Status Entitle You To?

You can get mosaic status with JetBlue by spending $50,000 or more in a card member year on either of the Barclaycard JetBlue cards that carry the $99 annual fee or by flying 30 segments plus 12,000 base flight points within a calendar year or earning 15,000 base flight points within a calendar year. Mosaic gives you the following benefits:

  • JetBlue change and cancellation fees will be waived for Mosaic members and others on their itinerary
  • You and others on your itinerary can check both the first and second bag for free – no matter which fare option you chose! (card already gives you first checked bag free)
  • 15,000 bonus points upon qualifying for Mosaic
  • Cut down on the time it takes to get to your gate with complimentary access to an expedited security line
  • Early boarding
  • Earn an additional 3 TrueBlue points per dollar on your JetBlue flight, for at least 9 points per dollar if you book on jetblue.com
  • Access to a dedicated Customer Service Line available 24/7
  • Enjoy complimentary alcoholic beverages onboard

Our Verdict

I think most people that hold the current American Express card will find value in upgrading to the plus card, the annual fee is an extra $59 a year but for that you get 5,000 anniversary points (worth $48.5 to $94.5), an extra 5% back when you redeem your points, free checked bags, an extra 2x points on JetBlue purchases & mosaic if you spend more than $50,000 per year on the card.

In terms of whether signing up for the new cards makes sense, it really depends. I don’t think the no annual fee card makes sense, because even at their maximum valuation 10,000 points is only worth $189. In terms of the $99 annual fee card, it really depends on the value you can get from the points and whether you fly JetBlue anyway. At best you’d be paying a $99 annual fee and getting up to $567 in value (not accounting for the 10% in points you’d get back, that would add another ~$57 or so), at worst you’d be paying a $99 annual fee and only getting $267 (again not account for the 10% back in points which would add another $27).

For people that fly with JetBlue, these cards are a no brainer. For everybody else, the decision is much more difficult. But I really like the direction Barclaycard has taken with these new cards, what are your thoughts? Will you be applying? Let me know in the comments below.

I was told today that an upgrade offer was going to be made available on the website on May 15th – based on my interaction with the cs dept today, I have zero confidence that will actually happen..

Thanks Gary – I’m not the least bit happy with the cs reps I’ve spoken with… might be time to drop this card altogether if they aren’t going to give out the points AND the $100 companion discount.

activated my transferred jet blue card from amex and noticed an interesting notation on the site regarding earning trueblue points which was not listed on the benefits when i got notification of the account change from amex.

You can earn 5,000 bonus points when you use your card for purchases of $1,000 or more from the account open date, up to 90 days thereafter. TrueBlue bonus points typically post 4-6 weeks after qualifying transactions post to your account.

Its listed specifically under my account so I have sent a message to cs to see what their response is to whether my account qualifies for this bonus.

an update, received a reply in the message center for all those that had their amex transferred to barclays jet blue. though not listed on the mailers, they consider this a new account. here is the info i received in message center. you can confirm if you have this same bonus opportunity by logging in and under rewards & benefits, earning true blue points there will be a mention of earning 5000 points in first 90 days.this is in addition to the $100 companion discount for $500 spend by june 30

heres the response i received in message center by barclays

Thank you for contacting us regarding your JetBlue Rewards Card. We can certainly address your inquiry regarding the bonus miles on your account.

We can confirm you will receive 5,000 bonus point as a Welcome Bonus for spending $1,000.00 in purchases (that are not later returned, disputed, or rescinded) within the first 90 days of your account being converted on March 21, 2016. As a reminder, your account must remain open, active, and in good standing throughout the promotional period in order to receive the bonus miles. Please keep in mind, the bonus miles will post to your JetBlue Rewards Card account 4 to 6 weeks after the qualifying transactions post to your account.

There’s no need to register for this promotion, just continue to use your card for your everyday purchases and be sure to spend over $1,000.00 within 90 days from March 21, 2016. We can also confirm purchases made by an authorized user will also count towards this promotion.

To review the reward miles earned using your JetBlue Rewards Card within the recent billing cycles on your account, or to view the bonus miles after they post, select the ‘View rewards’ tab located on the ‘Account summary’ page of our website and then select the blue ‘Rewards history’ link located near the top of the page. We hope you find this information helpful.

We would like to take a moment to welcome you to the BarclaycardUS family of credit cards! If you have any other questions or concerns, please reply to this message.

it appears the bonus offer posting within my account was a mistake that they corrected and should not have been an offer. I got this message.

Upon further review, we do not see an offer for 5,000 bonus points for spending $1,000.00 within 90 days. We sincerely apologize for the misinformation provided to you. In light of the misinformation in our previous message, however, should you spend $1,000.00 or more in net purchases by June 19, 2016, please feel free to contact us anytime either through this Secure Message Center or at 866-749-4157. We will forward a request to our Rewards Department to apply 5,000 bonus points to your account as a courtesy. This offer will be noted on your account.

Hello,
My husband and I closed our JetBlue Amex on March 5,2016 with the intent of applying for the new Plus card with Barclay. Today 2 new JetBlue Rewards Barclaycards came in the mail stating do not activate until March 21st. Do we bother applying for the new cards now or should I call ? All the notifications from Amex stated to cancel prior to March 18th which we did.
Thanks for the help !

After march 21st comes (prob april), I will be calling to either convert to the $0 annual fee card or the $99. It will depend if they consider the $99 an upgrade and give a bonus. My annual fee from amex was due in May and i dont fly them enough to warrant paying the $40. I would consider the $99 for the bonus and with the 5,000 anniversary bonus may warrant the fee.

I will post the results of my request for the plus. If anyone does it before me, please post that way we can see through several tries if its a policy or depends who you get

Ok, so I mishandled this transition.

I was waiting for AMEX to give me my last minute Jetblue points for my purchases. Amex waits til the following statement cycle to do that. I made calls to Amex inquire if I could cancel my card and retain my nice CL by transferring it to another AMEX card I had and was told I could. This was erroneous because I was told in a later call, it was too late earlier than what I understood in the inquiry call.

I then shook the tree to get my JB points which for some reason were overlooked and late. But, it was too late to cancel then.

So, now my question: In this very short interim, should I chance applying for the JB card under the Barclay umbrella, trying for those bonus JB points? I realize I will not be auto approved but hopefully during the reconsideration call, I can get rid of dead weight (the Wyndham Visa) and open the JB card NEW.

Well, if anyone wonders if the strategy worked, it didn’t, sigh.

so it sounds like we should cancel the AMEX before 3/18 if we want to apply for the Barclays JB plus, correct?
