For some time, Uber and SPG have been partners to give bonus SPG points for your Uber rides. They’ve now lowered the amount of points earned per dollar.
Previously, the earn-rate was 1 SPG point per $1 spent anytime and 2-4 points per $1 when staying at an SPG hotel.
The new, lower rate will be 1 point per $2 spent anytime and a flat 2 points per $1 spent when staying at an SPG hotel. This change will take effect on February 1, 2017.
- Anytime: Old Rate – 1 point per $1; New Rate – 1 point per $2
- SPG Stay: Old Rate – 2-4 points per $1; New Rate 2 points per $1
As before, you can only earn points on up to $10,000 in Uber spend per calendar year.

The partnership kicks in after you have at least 1 qualified stay at a SPG property. Does the stay/nights gained as part of AMEX SPG sign-up count towards this qualification?

I’m not upset about this. Uber is already something I think a vast majority of people that use would keep using regardless of certain promotions, and while SPG doesn’t affect my usage of Uber, it felt like the SPG points were something for nothing. The requirement of having to activate it annually with a stay definitely keeps SPG in the back of my mind every time I plan early-year travelling, and I think is a good rule to have on their part. In my opinion it’s still a beneficial long-term promotion for both sides, and even better we can continue stacking it with other promotions and activate it with award nights.
Yeah but they’re now giving bonuses. I just got an offer of 5 points per UBER dollar spent during a stay.
I will say that I use Uber over Lyft becasue of the quadrupple dipping of awards. (SPG, Thanks again, cap one point, cap one free ride credit). This offer actually worked on me. I intentionally stayed at an SPG property just to get the link active. At the time you were requuired to link as well as have a paid stay to start earning SPG points. I never realixed their was a limit. Thanks. Too bad they reduced the earning rate, but still a nice little bonus for a heavy uber user. Mayby Uber wants to start making money soon. I am shocked on how many deals uber oofers throughout the year.
