US Bank Removes Free Experian FAKO Score, Promises Another

You may have noticed in your US Bank login that they’ll no longer be offering a free Experian credit score after May 28, 2015. Here’s what came up in my US Bank login:

usbank free credit score

The credit score offered by US Bank (until May 28) is an Experian FAKO score. They allow you to create an account with Experian and access your Experian Plus score for free. (Some have reported problems with the score getting updated.)

I must have once signed up for this and just today Experian sent me an email telling about the change and offering to give me even better service…for a fee of $8.99 per month. (I’ll pass.)

We have to wait and see what US Bank will offer; they promise to continue giving us access to a free credit score after the Experian partnership ends. We don’t  know if it will be Equifax or Transunion.

The better question, however, is if they’ll perhaps start giving access to a free FICO score from Equifax or Transunion. This would be way more useful since it’s the score that most lenders use when making credit decisions. Many credit cards started offering free FICO scores recently, see the credit card section of our Complete List Of Places To Get Free FICO Scores. Hopefully, US Bank will try to stay competitive and offer this as well, though it’s more likely that it will just be another FAKO score.

A FAKO score from any bureau isn’t terribly helpful sometimes. I remember that for the longest time Credit Sesame only showed a N/A as my score, but at least I received alerts based on report updates. There are a few other sites where one can obtain an Experian score – FNBO and Chase Slate, but neither provide the alerts functionality.
There must be pricing pressure at work, and I’m disappointed to lose visibility into Experian alerts, but I don’t know for sure whether Experian has pushed me to pay for their service, or just give up the alerts until I request consumer disclosure copies every so often.

I’m guessing this is mostly on Experian’s end. There seems to be a movement away from FAKO sites using Experian. Credit Sesame just moved away from them as well. And Credit Karma has recently added Equifax in addition to Transunion (but not Experian). I’m guessing some schmuck in a suit at Experian decided it would be more profitable to force people to buy their real score, but the real result of that is going to be to alienate people and push them to the other two bureaus.
