Hotel Engine recently shut down their consumer site, I had $800 in referral credit still in my account at the time of closure. You can still use this credit, but it’s a little bit tricky. I don’t have any upcoming travel plans for the United States (Hotel Engine doesn’t work internationally). Â So I thought why not just give it away to my readers. After all, I wouldn’t have the credit if it wasn’t for you (keep in mind this is about 4x more than I’ve ever earned from any referral program – I definitely hit it lucky with this one. Mainly because this site ranks for the search term ‘Hotel Engine’).
I’ll be giving away two prizes of $400 in hotel engine credit each, total prize pool is $800. I’m going to be using Gleam for the give away. Details and how to enter can be found below.
Doctor of Credit $800 HotelEngine Give Away
Competition starts at 10AM (Eastern), May 6th 2015 and will end on Thursday, May 14th 2015 at 11:59PM. HotelEngine are not sponsors of this competition, this is all coming from my personal account.
We will only send you e-mails if you win, or if you sign up for the newsletter or competition notifications. We will not sell or spam your e-mail address. You’ll be prompted for your full name (real name not necessary) and e-mail address after performing one of the actions, this is just so we can alert the winner. You can also login in the top using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Soundcloud.
If this is popular I’ll definitely hold similar competitions in the future. This is my first time using a managed solution for a competition, so please cut me some slack if it doesn’t work as planned.
Thanks for the opportunity.
Who won?
You’re the man! Thanks!
So how come you deleted my comment. You are proud of your banishment of affiliate links but you don’t like someone pointing out your contest provider wants to not only send tweets on your behalf, but also update your profile?
I didn’t delete your comment, you’ve never left a comment before so it has to be manually approved first. Looking into your complaint now, the contest provider definitely should not be doing that.
Looked at your comment, doesn’t look Gleam actually sent out unauthorized tweets on your behalf so not sure what the complaint is? They need that access to ensure you have followed/retweeted. As I said above, it makes the whole contest hands free for me.
I understand some people might not be comfortable with that, which is fine. We’ll try to host some competitions without gleam so they can participate. But the truth is that this requires a lot less time on my behalf which means I can focus on other things.
Sorry about that second post. I refreshed my screen a couple of times & the comment was still awaiting moderation. I refreshed a third time & it disappeared. I posted the second comment out of frustration & as soon as I posted it, the first comment reappeared. I couldn’t find a way to delete it, so there it is for the whole world to see that I’m an impatient idiot.
I have no problem with giving them access to read a tweet, but the rest of the access seems a little intrusive.
I think that’s just the minimum access Twitter allows them to ask for, I’m not entirely sure and it’s something I’ll follow up with them. If there was ever an instance of them inappropriately using this information/access I would use another provider but from what I’ve seen they seem to have the best access permissions.
More than willing to look at reasonable alternatives and listen to criticism though. I’m not a massive fan that they require that much access and if they can require less, I’ll be pushing for that.
Also no need to apologize, it happens all the time. Sorry if I seemed snarky, wasn’t my intention I’ve just had a few people claiming similar things in the approval queue. Obviously I need to make it more known that first time comments require manual approval!
Where is the +3 button? I don’t see it.
Should be next to the “Subscribe to newsletter” bit.
Authorize Gleam Competition App to use your account?
This application will be able to:
Read Tweets from your timeline.
See who you follow, and follow new people.
Update your profile.
Post Tweets for you.
No thanks.
It’s so that Gleam can see that you actually completed the required actions (like following and retweeting) if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, that’s fine. It automates the whole process for me and actually allows me to see more than 100 retweets unlike doing it manually.
am i daft? where is the +3 button?
Are we automatically entered if we’re already signed up for the newsletter, or is it only for new subscribers?
When you click the +3 button it should enter you if the e-mail you used to registered is already subscribed to the e-mail I believe. You still need to click that +3 button though!
What about twitter and FB
Click the Twitter +1 and choose the connect account option, this will work for both Twitter entries.
And with FB, just click the +1 button. You only have to visit that page no need to like us on FB (they don’t allow that), but the like is appreciated anyway!
