Our Verdict

They frequently offer transfer bonuses but usually they are only up to 30% and also tiered. This makes this offer significantly better than normal, but does it make sense to transfer? Only SPG & Marriott are really worth looking at

SPG

SPG has a 1:1 transfer rate and you get a bonus 5,000 miles for every 20,000 SPG points you transfer in addition to this 35% transfer bonus. That means if you transfer 20,000 points you’ll end up with 33,750 miles. I still think SPG points are too valuable to consider this.

Marriott

Marriott Hotel + Air Package’s are also good value. 7 nights at a category 1-5 property plus 120,000 miles (162,000 miles with this bonus) would cost you 270,000 Marriott points.

I don’t really value Aeroplan miles highly at all, so this offer is a pass for me. Let me know about your thoughts on it in the comments below. Keep in mind Air Canada will launch it’s own loyalty program in 2020 as well, I suspect Aeroplan will continue to offer better than normal bonuses because of this.

@Isaiah – If you are just interested in airline miles (not hotel stays), then the optimal package is Category 1-5 + 120K miles. That costs 270K Marriott points, and you get back 162K Aeroplan miles. 1.7 Marriott to Aeroplan.

I wonder what what’s in it for the transfer partners to offer the deals. Are they really making that much money on it?

I was just about to book a one-way business award ticket (75K miles and low fees) to Mongolia this morning on Aeroplan and held off for some reason. Hence the fortuitousness of this post.

I have 20k SPG points expiring in a few months. I do not generally stay in chain hotels while traveling, so I might take advantage of this.

Does anyone have experience as to how long it actually takes for the point transfer to complete?

Starwood usually takes 5 days for aeroplan transfers

I posted this comment elsewhere, and I’m interested in input:

I’m about to book a Marriott package primarily to get the 7-night hotel stay. I have no immediate use for the miles so I was going to snag 120K Alaska miles speculatively.

Now this raises a question: with no specific uses in mind, should I go for 120K Alaska miles, or 162K Aeroplan miles?

What does everyone think?

I cannot specifically suggest you on what to do but it is generally unwise to park your transferable currency with ANY mileage program. Even more so when the number is as huge as yours. Personally, I’ve purchased Alaska miles speculatively (when they had 50% bonus offers) and regretted it but of course I am just one instance. If you go through comments on reddit though, you’ll see others advising the same. I’d say if you’re not from AK or WA then its probably a bad move. If you are then it’d depend on how often you travel.

Ben you should shoot me an email [email protected] i had the opposite issue, and mainly did the transfer for the miles. I could transfer my 7 night certificate to you and we could probably make a mutually beneficial deal

Pretty good deal if you’re taking advantage of one of the sweet spots in the Aeroplan chart.

90k Starpoints for a 7-night certificate and a mini-RTW in business class is a pretty good deal.
