Aeroplan has added the ability to redeem miles for Etihad award flights and best of all no fuel surcharges are charged (and Etihad miles can be redeemed for Aeroplan flights as well). These Etihad flights are subject to the fixed award chart that is found here.
You can transfer to Aeroplan from the following flexible point currencies:
- American Express Membership Rewards (1:1)
- Capital One (1,000:750)
- Barclays Arrival Premier (1.7:1)
Feel free to share any sweet spots you notice in the comments below.
This is a gamechanger. Much easier to redeem and especially now when AA is blocking Etihad availability online (at least a week ago). I have tons of AA miles too but I can save those for Qatar, Cathay, and JAL now.

Rates for booking AC with ET miles look pretty shitty.
For any travelers with children under age 2, one great thing about Aeroplan award redemptions is that they only charge 10% *of the miles* used to book your ticket for a lap-infant. Almost every other airline charges 10% of the published fare.
Tangibly speaking, that would mean paying 14,000 Aeroplan miles (~$200 in value) for a lap-infant fare on a First Class roundtrip award in First Apartments, compared to the $1,000+ you’d pay if it cost you 10% of the published fare.
Wow. That makes AA miles completely useless and thrown into oblivion now.
Edit: Oh wheres my coffee. I mixed up etihad with qatar.
How so? Still great for QR redemptions
My bad. I mixed up etihad with qatar.
Is that chart one way or RT?
Edit: it’s RT
