Our Verdict
Unfortunately it looks like using a gift card will invalidate earning the miles (you can get second hand gift cards for 30% off, that would have made this deal amazing). This basically lets you purchase miles at 2¢ (actually a little less after you factor in the credit card rewards points) and get some free magazines (just remember to cancel). Personally I don’t think purchasing miles at 2¢ is a good use of your money, but everybody is in a different situation.
Hat tip to Running With Miles
Caveat Emptor. I went to order Time magazine but there is an “auto-renewal” option that is turned on by default. So if you don’t figure out how to cancel it afterwards you will be auto-renewed at a much higher rate. I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle for 500 miles.
it’s a great deal if you actually want the magazine
Figure you could probably donate the magazines to charitable organizations and claim the tax deduction? Or give to places that you frequently have to wait [doctor’s offices, hair stylists, etc.] as a nicety? Or to friends and family as nice thinking-of-you gifts? Just some thoughts, if the magazines are any good.
This is great for magazine you would actually want to read, like “The Week”.

pass…
I think the gift card restriction is referring to buying gift cards, not using them. I could be wrong though.
It is, but if you click the linked FM lab you’ll see that there are DP of GC not working to earn miles.
There’s no mentioning that you can’t earn miles when redeeming gift card in the terms.
