American Express Has Discontinued The Gold Card (Not PRG)

We heard from a new source a few weeks ago that American Express would be discontinuing the Gold charge card, we didn’t originally post as the card wasn’t offering any sign up bonus and it isn’t worth signing up for. It looks like that information is true and the Gold card has been discontinued, at the moment you just get a loading circle when you go to dedicated page for that card  (update before posting, it’s now actually redirecting to the PRG card).

It should be noted that the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card is still available for sign up (highest current bonus is a total of 65,000 points or 50,000 points for $2,000 in spend). At this stage it isn’t clear what will happen to existing regular gold cardholders.

Will current Delta Gold SkyMiles cardholders be transitioned into the new no-fee card?

Does this mean that Lizzy Gardiners dress might be worth more? 😉

I got this card last year when they had a sign up bonus of about 40K points and then another 25k after spending $2500 between July and October of this year. Any idea if I’ll still have a chance to earn those 25k points on another card if they’re discontinuing this one?

There are some 25,000 links out there for the Green Card. You might have to dig to find one!

Thanks, what I meant though is any chance Amex would honor the deal they had offered me on another card I already have with them?

Should I apply for this or Chase Ink?

The Amex Gold card is so iconic, I’m surprised they didn’t change the terms to make it more popular, rather than kill it.

It says Preferred Rewards Gold, not Premier Rewards Gold. The PRG is the Premier version. Preferred Rewards is the former name of the standard Gold Card.

Interesting that it doesn’t show up like that to me. Says plain Gold Card. Anyway – holding hope someone might have a link to the version with a bonus.

Went a head and was approved for Gold for Ameriprise.

Also got an OBC, since there’s HP anyway.
