American Express Incidental Reimbursement Issues (Southwest & Delta)

Update 7/4/19: A USCreditCardGuide101 reader purchased 5 Delta $50 gift cards at the same time on June 23rd, 2019. Two of these were reimbursed on June 25th, 2019. That makes me think something funky is going on.

Some American Express cards offer a reimbursement for airline incidentals (e.g baggage, inflight entertainment/food), despite the terms clearly saying that gift cards are excluded some of these purchases work. In February American Airlines changed how gift card purchases were coded and this stopped these purchases from working, although there was an update saying that these purchases were now working again (still waiting for more datapoints on that to confirm one way or the other).

It seems that on or around June 22nd or 23rd both Delta & Southwest gift cards have stopped issuing the credit. This sort of thing has happened before (onetwo). What’s odd this time is that people who have made qualifying incidental purchases have been reimbursed (for example somebody purchased SW early bird and a gift card on the same day and only early bird was refunded). We did a post on Southwest giftcards in particular not working earlier, but those issues seem to have resolved but are now occurring again.

Datapoints

Keep in mind it looks like these issues started happening on June 22nd or 23rd, but there are datapoints of earlier gift cards not being reimbursed as well. It’s also worth remembering that Delta gift cards need to be purchased on desktop, otherwise they are processed by cashstar and are never reimbursed.

More datapoints are available in the individual Flyertalk threads: Delta | Southwest

My Thoughts

I feel like something like this, or similar to this happens once every year or so. The fact that American Airlines gift cards look like they have stopped working earlier in the year and the fact that other changes are being reimbursed does make me think that this time it might be different (although I do think that every time this happens – I’m a bit of a pessimist sometimes). My recommendation would be to just sit tight and wait for now and see if reimbursements start coming through again or not. If American Express is truly cracking down on airline incidentals, the value proposition changes and makes these cards even less attractive.

Amex’s new airline incidental fee devaluation has really reduced that benefit for the Aspire (thus, limiting my interest in keeping it after the first year’s sign up bonus). No more gift cards. And with Delta, at least, they don’t allow you to use the Aspire for SkyClub lounge day passes (only accept Amex Platinum, Delta Platinum, Delta Gold, etc. using the physical card), so that’s worthless there too. Unless I need two $125 change fees waived, the only way I see myself using this each calendar year is to load up on inflight beverages…

I canelled the aspire do to it and now just have the surpass. The incidental fee was useless to me and the hilton resort credit was also near useless to me due to how limited it was (if you go to Fl a lot its probably much more valuable).

I just noticed that when trying to buy a Delta gift card at delta.com, I am redirected to deltavacations.com – Does anybody know if that has always been so? I was wondering if it’s new and if it could be the reason Delta GC are not getting reimbursed now.

7/24 Paid full fare for a one-way SWA flight using split payment — gift card + Amex plat
7/27 Received airline fee reimbursement

The total amount charged to the plat was under $100 — two separate charges for Early Bird fee + balance after using gift card. I received two airline fee reimbursement credits (each one under $50)

Just a little story / thought here that could be something to try for AmEx AA incidental:

I used a bunch of AA GCs to purchase a cash flight LGA-CDG last week. I got notified that one of the GCs bounced, likely because I didn’t keep track of the balance properly. When I called in to complete the payment to ticket the flight, they wouldn’t let me use a new GC for the balance, but required a gift card. This ended up being in the amount of like $9, and I charged it to my CNB Crystal card, and got the travel credit.

Now, I know CNB is not AmEx, but this could be an interesting way to try to get your incidental credit used up for a cash ticket, not that everyone here is trying to pay cash for tickets…

Interesting.

I will definitely be trying this with my platinum on the next AA flight I buy

I’m a big fan of Amex in-general, but if the Delta gift card thing isn’t resolved quickly, I’ll likely be closing at least 2 cards. Just saying.

I’m in the same boat as you. Bad move for Amex. It makes it really ridiculous to hold multiple of their premium cards, which i do. So I’ll close at least 2.

On a second note, I have a flight booked in main cabin on delta, if I upgrade to first class using my amex gold, will my 100$ airline credit kick in and reimburse me? I haven’t seen any data points on that.

I am wondering if it has to do with the amount. Checked bag fees increased from $25 to $30. Maybe $60 (2 checked bags) would code?

I open an Amex in the beginning of June to get the 50k points (I already have a stripped down blue card with a 1k limit and a stripped down everyday card with a $500 limit don’t judge me credit isn’t that amazing but I’m working on it 😁) It’s now July and I’ve attained the points how do I maximize them? The plan was to maximize the gold card by maximizing the dining credit at shake shack (I love shake shack) and buy the gift cards making the AF essentially $30 but now it’s seems the as fuck is going to to be $130 because of the block; how do I maximize the gold card since I paid the fee for the year and then exit so that I’m not stuck with this crazy annual fee?
