American Express Sending Out Checks for Missing Bonuses

A bunch of people received today a check in the mail as payment for a missing points from a welcome bonus or purchases.

We didn’t issue the Welcome Bonus that you earned. Because of a technical error we didn’t issue the <miles/points> that you earned for one or more eligible purchases.

The letter also references which card it was that had the missing points.

My guess is this is the same wave of reappearing signup bonuses that we wrote about back on March 10th, just those whose cards were already closed go it back as a check in the mail. Presumably, they counted the points at 1 cent per point.

The odd thing is that no one who got this check can seem to figure out which signup bonus was missing. My best guess is that Amex is using ‘signup bonus’ as a generic reference to any sort of bonus they were eligible for, and some missing referral bonuses are being sent now via check. That would make this wave of checks more part of the January crediting than the March 10th crediting.

Thanks to reader Abey for the image and to r/churning members here and here who reported on this as well.

beware small checks that anyone wants you to “deposit”. The For Deposit Only identifies your bank and your account #…you don’t want anyone to know your bank name and your account #. Routing # is easy to get.

Is there a phone number on the letter so that one can call if hasn’t received an expected bonus? I see an address on the posted picture but not a phone number. Thanks.

Yeah I got a check too for an Amex Platinum that I’ve had closed for over a year(!). I received the full 100k signup bonus on that card NP. I had an issue with an SPG card not getting the right signup bonus but the #’s don’t match up. I received $150.00

Just got back from margaritas with the wife after an unexpected Amex windfall of $630 (!). Referenced cc was an SPG business card that we had cancelled last October. I have no idea why we got the amex $. I seem to recall referring a couple of friends who got the personal (not the business) card and not getting a referral bonus. I’m pretty happy about the Amex remedy!

My father just received a $450 check today. It clearly states that they didn’t issue a Marriott Bonvoy welcome bonus. He was denied a welcome bonus to SPG biz card 2 years ago because part of the spend requirement was met through VGCs from Simon Mall. This was when news first broke about people getting denied welcoming bonuses when buying from SimonMall.

I recall writing many angry letters to them, used twitter amex support, opening two CFPB complaints, phone calls, instant chats – they all gave me the runaround. The only people that would tell me why the bonus was denied was SPG loyalty customer service, that inquired on my (i mean my dad’s) behalf. I finally just gave up and closed the card.

Now 2 years later…i get this check, what stupidity. I would rather have the points. Give me the damn points!

I had an American Express bonus never post from about three years ago. I was told about 10 times I earned it by CS and it would post on my next statement. I finally gave up. I have little hope I will see it now, but maybe.
