American Express Adds Permanent Centurion Lounge Restrictions – 3 Hours Prior To Departure & No Access On Arrival (No Restriction On Layovers)

Update 9/16/19: Frequent Miler points out that this does not apply to lay overs. This was something I was not aware of, so thought some readers wouldn’t know either. Terms clearly state (emphasis mine):

We will not admit Platinum Card Members more than 3 hours before the departure time on the Platinum Card Member’s same-day, confirmed boarding pass. This does not apply to Platinum Card Members with a connecting flight.

I don’t actually mind this change nearly as much now. Fairly odd to get to your flight more than 3 hours beforehand if it’s not a layover.

Original post: American Express has announced that starting March 22nd, 2019 they will be adding two new permanent restrictions to accessing centurion lounges:

  • Access will no longer be granted upon arrival
  • Access will only be granted three hours or less prior to the original scheduled departure time

These new changes will affect Platinum cardholders, Centurion cardholders will remain unaffected. In addition children under 2 years of age will receive free access and not count towards the limit of two guests. American Express has tried to put other measures in place to reduce lounge congestion, day passes were eliminated for non premium cardholders & guests were limited to two (previously immediate family members were also allowed) but obviously this hasn’t done enough to curb lounge use especially in locations with smaller lounges.

I think American Express has gone about lounge number reduction in the wrong way, I talked about other ways to reduce overcrowding here. I would have personally preferred to have a set limit of ‘guaranteed entries’ annually and then additional access based on space. This new change favors regular (business) travelers over people that might only use the lounge a handful of times a year. Although I can’t see business travelers loving losing access on arrival, I know I’ve taken advantage of being able to have a quick shower before.

I’m not even sure these new permanent restrictions will help, American Express was already limiting access to 2 hours prior to departure and no arrival access at some lounges at an increasingly frequent rate and overcrowding as still occurring. At the end of the day these lounges are a victim of their own success and it’s difficult for American Express to increase the size of these lounges as airport space is extremely limited. My guess is that these new changes are only the beginning and we will soon see the restriction reduced to 2 hours prior to departure.

Excellent news. Way too many lounge rats abusing the system, treating lounges as if they were hotels. If caught, they should be banned.

If you are upset about an Amex policy, the best thing you can do is contact their Executive Office to submit a formal complaint. 800-297-6196. Pouting in the corner and/or cancelling your card isn’t going to help things because your voice will never be heard by anyone who can forward your valuable opinion(s) up the food chain. At the very least, you’ll likely get a few thousand MR points for your loyalty. So it’s a win/win deal no matter what.

The problem with this is for us that use same day flight change a lot. They won’t let you enter if you’re there for an earlier standby flight.

I like the lounges to shower when I land even as a tourist. I have my guide pick me up at the airport and immediately start my guiding. Why waste time going to the hotel?

Limiting the number of guests is critical, as is counting children over two.

I don’t understand the whole has to be within 3 hours of the flight nonsense….

Lounges are SPECIFICALLY for that – when I have something like a flight that gets in at 8 AM but my connecting flight home isn’t until 1:00 PM or something similar. That is just fucking insane IMO.

Honestly at this point I really don’t care much. The food tends to suck. The drink choices suck. I’d rather just find the best pub in the airport and hang out there. I’ll have my own table, and I can be there for as long as I want while enjoying much tastier food. Comes at a price, but it’s worth it over having to deal with these nanny lounges and their bullshit bureaucracy.

Personally, I like having it all in one spot- power sockets, food, drinks, and seats. Also, at places like HKG it means I’m not paying extra to try things I may or may not like.

Good change. Marginally good for everyone with less crowding. Hugely negative on some people. But the point is, it is good for everyone. I am all in for that.

NOOOO. Oh this is heartbreaking. No more running into the lounge 5 mins before boarding to grab a quick dinner and down a few glasses of wine!

The need for these policy changes shows that Amex is finally reaching the limit of their “Centurion lounge strategy” for attracting signups for Platinum. Remember the good old days of 10-15 years ago when a Platinum card could you into the lounges of a number of different major airlines? That strategy filled the airlines’ lounges to the point that they cancelled their agreements with Amex, and now only Delta is left.
