American Express To Hold First Ever Membership Week (6/14 – 6/18)

American Express has announced it will hold the first ever membership week from June 14 until June 18. The aim is to show ‘why life is better with AmEx’. Each day will focus on a different aspect (travel, dining, retail, wellness, and entertainment). American Express will provide offers, experiences and deals and participating brands include Calm, Equinox, Resy. Some of the sample offers/deals are as follows:

  • Complimentary access for Card Members to an American Express UNSTAGED must-see performance by multi-platinum and award-winning TDE recording artist SZA (after a refund of $1 for Card Member verification). SZA will be performing her genre-defying artistry and celebrating the four year anniversary of her highly acclaimed debut album, CTRL, for the special virtual experience taking place June 17, 2021 on LIVENow. Additionally, fans will be able to purchase tickets beginning today at sza.live-now.com. Terms apply.
  • A limited number of exclusive tickets are available for purchase to a virtual dining class with world-renowned chef and founder of Momofuku, David Chang.
  • Access to meditation sessions from Calm and workout classes from Equinox+.
  • Opportunity to purchase items from a limited-edition, travel-inspired capsule collection designed by New York or Nowhere® (NYON) co-founder and creative director Quincy Moore. American Express Card Members will have the ability to collaborate on the design of these special items in real-time on American Express’ social media channels. The capsule collection will be available exclusively for Card Members on newyorkornowhere.com.

To be honest none of the above offers/deals fill me with confidence that this Membership Week will actually be any good, but happy to be proven wrong (and the class with David Chang would be fun if it wasn’t paid).

  • There are actually other deals and offers that Amex hasn't published yet, so y'all are being outraged at nothing right now.

And considering how this event will not start for another 8 days, your outrage is also premature--just like your outrage for the new 1099-K reporting threshold that doesn't go into effect until 2022.

TL;DR None of you know how to do outrage correctly.

    • Can I be outraged now? We're about half way through Membership Week and I've seen nothing of value to me thus far.

    • Interesting how an individual can determine the correctness of outrage for all other people. I can only assume they think they know better or assume they are better than everyone else. Maybe they're full of themselves or something worse...

  • I feel deeply appreciated as a cardholder when AmEx tries to offer me "benefits" that cost it little or nothing to procure.

FYI, the above examples are not an exhaustive list of all membership week offers. Personally, I'm looking forward to what the travel offers are. They can't be worse than Saks credits, right?

  • All jokes aside, this is an interesting move to say the least.

I assume most DoC readers aren't in the audience of SZA fans, but I'm interested and will def tune in. Virtual concerts can be done really well, so I'm hopeful that it'll at least be decent. The other events seem kinda boring though (I'm wondering what the extent of interactivity with New York or Nowhere will be - probably a poll of which option people like more or something lol)

What is also interesting is the inclusion of Equinox+ - the Platinum card refresh rumors included Equinox credits, so if those are true, this may be a way for Amex to introduce that refresh with that in mind (it would also confirm that yes, any Equinox credits could be used on the app and not just in the few physical gyms). Calm is funny considering my free annual trial from last year just ended - maybe Calm noticed people weren't re-subscribing and is going to offer more? We'll see.

Regardless, I would hope that this Membership week isn't just for kicks and giggles but will either become a regular thing, or hopefully, be the precursor for a new refresh or launch. Fingers crossed.

  • Is this serious? They are very out of touch with what most consumers would actually want. Give us real tangible benefits if you are offering something like this. This is just fluff and nonsense.

  • What's next. A free, downloadable guide to looking at flowers and rainbows, courtsey of Amex?

    • You joke, but most people have no idea how to enjoy flowers or rainbows. Kids will just step on flowers, and adults are too busy instagramming rainbows to truly enjoy them.
