The Offer
Many people are reporting being able to redeem their Membership Rewards (MR) points for gift cards at a promotional discounted rate. The offer is targeted and is only working for select people.
The most common offer being found is:
- Purchase numerous gift card brands for 10% less points. For example, a $50 gift card will be just 4500 points.
- The following brands have this offer: Staples, Hope Depot, Gap, Old Navy, Bath & Body Works, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, West Elm.
There’s also a couple of other offers mentioned:
- One person was targeted with 20% off on Home Depot gift cards.
- Another mentions 40% off on Saks gift cards.
It’s possible there are other offers being targeted at others as well.
The Fine Print
- Valid until 9/1/15
- Valid on physical or electronic gift cards
Our Verdict
Redeeming MR points for gift cards isn’t the best value for most people since you can do much better by transferring the points to travel partners. That said, some do make use of MR points in that fashion and this could be an opportunity to get better than the standard penny-per-point in gift cards.

Oh, forgot to say Mickey D's is targeting patrons for purchases at reduced rates, also. No gift card needed. Fewer points than normal to cover that quick snack charge.
Amex MR is combining the idea of uncontrollable quick fast food consumption with the donor side, ie, Ronald McDonald house, a worthwhile charity. The info text is sent rather quickly after leaving the McD's parking lot. ;)

Hey, I want to go to "Hope Depot"!!!! :)
Even the thought of redeeming MR for gift cards makes me cringe.
