The Bank of America Premium Rewards credit card is now available for applications. With benefits and sign up bonuses as predicted.

  • $100 Airline Incidental Statement Credit annually for qualifying purchases such as seat upgrades, baggage fees, in-flight services and airline lounge fees. Only applies to domestic-originated flights on certain U.S. Domestic airline carriers.
  • $100 airport security statement credit towards TSA Pre✓ ® or Global Entry Application fee every four year
  • Sign up bonus of 50,000 points after $3,000 in purchases within the first 90 days of account opening
  • Card earns at the following rates:
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Eligible for Bank of America Preferred Rewards, meaning you can get an additional 25-75% rewards on all purchases. Makes the card earn at the following rates with top tier status:
    • 3.5x points per $1 spent on travel & dining purchases
    • 2.625x points per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Points are worth 1¢ each and can be redeemed for cash back as a statement credit into eligible Bank of America or Merrll Lynch accounts or to purchase travel through the Bank of America travel center or to redeem gift cards

Card Benefits

$100 Travel Incidental Credit

This card gives you a $100 airline incidental statement credit every calendar year. This is big news as it means you can get use the credit twice but only pay the annual fee once (e.g apply now and use for 2017 and then use it again in 2018). To use the credit you just need to use the Premium Rewards card to pay your airline incidentals and then allow 7 days for the statement credit to post to your account. Unfortunately only  the following is eligible:domestic-originated flights on certain U.S.-domestic airline carriers that include: preferred seating upgrades, ticket change/cancellation fees, checked baggage fees, in-flight entertainment, onboard food and beverage charges, and airport lounge fees affiliated with eligible airline carriers.

The following as specifically excluded in the fine print: Airline ticket purchases, mileage point purchases, mileage point transfer fees, gift cards, duty-free purchases, award tickets and fees incurred with airline alliance partners do not qualify. Airline incidental fee transactions must be separate from airline ticket charges. In practice we don’t know what will and won’t work. I’ll keep this section of this post updated with what does and doesn’t work with datapoints as they come in, please share yours in the comments when possible.

They list the following Merchant Category Codes as qualifying: 3000, 3001, 3057, 3058, 3063, 3066, 3132, 3174, 3196 or 3256. You can find datapoints on what does/doesn’t work here.

TSA Pre✓/Global Entry Credit

You’re eligible for one statement credit per account every four years for either TSA Pre✓ ($85) or Global Entry ($100). You might as well get Global Entry as it includes Pre✓ as well. You just need to use your card to pay for application fee.

Emergency Travel Benefits

  • Trip Delay Reimbursement of $500 per ticker purchased for you and your eligible family members for reasonable expenses if a covered trip is delayed for more than 12 hours
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption of up to $5,000 per person per trip for the unused prepaid non-refundable travel expenses including passenger fares, tours, and hotels if you have to cancel due to a covered reason
  • Baggage Delay of up to $100 per day (up to five days) when your bags are delayed or misdirected by a common carrier for more than six hours for essential items including clothing.

Limited to $250 per eligible item and up to $1,000 annually. Items must be received by the benefit administrator in like-new/good working condition

Automotive Benefits

How Much Are Points Worth?

Points are worth 1¢ each and can be redeemed for cash back into a Bank of America checking or savings account (or various Merrill Lynch accounts) or as a statement credit. In addition you can redeem points for travel at the travel center or for gift cards. Minimum redemption is 2,500 ($25) for all options.

Preferred Rewards

Bank of America’s preferred rewards program is where it becomes interesting for ongoing spend. We have discussed this program in detail before here. But basically is if you have assets held in Bank of America accounts (or Merrill Lynch) you’re eligible for a bonus as a Preferred Rewards relationship client. Here are the tiers:

  • Preferred Rewards Gold $20,000 – $50,000:  25% bonus on rewards
    • 2.5x points per $1 spent on travel & dining purchases
    • 1.875x points per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Preferred Rewards Platinum $50,000-$100,000: 50% bonus on rewards
    • 3x points per $1 spent on travel & dining purchases
    • 2.25x points per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Preferred Rewards Platinum Honors $100,000+: 75% bonus on rewards
    • 3.5x points per $1 spent on travel & dining purchases
    • 2.625x points per $1 spent on all other purchases

Our Verdict

It’s hard to make a case against signing up for this card, it comes with a sign up bonus worth $500 in cash or statement credit (using for travel/gift cards doesn’t make a lot of sense, just redeem for statement credit and then make those travel/gift card purchases on the card instead) and you can also get $200 in travel incidental credits and only pay a $95 annual fee. The downside is that there is a $3,000 minimum spend requirement but that isn’t excessive given the sign up bonus. I suspect this is only the launch bonus and it will be decreased over time (we saw the same with the Chase Sapphire Reserve and also the Blue Business Plus).

Keeping the card long term would only real make sense if you had Preferred Rewards as otherwise you’d be better off just using a 2%+ cash back card for all purchases (otherwise it’s 1.5% on all purchases and then 2% on travel/restaurants). For those with Preferred Rewards this card would be better option than say the travel rewards card (this card also gives 2.625x on all purchases with the highest Preferred Rewards status but can’t be redeemed for cash back), but that’s only true if the travel credit would offset the annual fee for you (or the convenience of being able to cash out your rewards instead of having to use them for travel).

For most people this will be a card that is at the very least worth signing up for the 50,000 point sign up bonus and the $100 travel incidental credits * 2 that you’ll be able to get. Because of that I’ll be adding it to our list of the best credit card sign up bonuses. I also imagine that this saddly means the Merrill+ is no longer available, but if anybody tries to sign up please let us know. If you have any questions about Bank of America credit cards in general, I’d recommend reading this post. There is also a $100 checking bonus currently available, not sure if that helps get approved or not.

F.A.Q’s

Do you get the Preferred Rewards bonus on the sign up bonus?

Unfortunately I don’t think so. You get this bonus on purchases and not the sign up bonus.

Can I triple dip the travel credit by applying in December?

This might be possible, will likely depend on how quickly the statement credit posts (looks like it should be within 7 days but isn’t entirely clear if this is 7 days of the purchase posting or the statement cycle posting).

Can you product change to this card?

According to this datapoint, you can. Just keep in mind that by product changing you will not get the sign up bonus.

Will Bank of America expedite this card?

  • Yes (for Preferred Rewards customers by calling 888.888.7937): 1

Can you transfer points to this card?

Yes, travel rewards & AAA points can be transferred to this card but cash rewards cannot be transferred. This is useful as this premium card gives you the option of redeeming points for cash back/statement credit.

Does this card have any transfer partners?

No

Doc,

I’d add in your write up that points can also be redeemed as a statement credit, which is probably a better option than gift cards for those of us who don’t have a BofA banking account.

Rab
Rab

I got approved for my 2nd merill+ on 9/8. I will try to apply for this card based on the previous hp. I hope i can save another hp.

James33
James33

Could you elaborate on this? Because I applied for my 2nd Merrill+ on 9/13. Are you saying applying for another BofA card within a certain amount of days will use the previous HP? I thought it would need to be the same day.

Klad
Klad

BOfA uses the same pull for 30 days.. Most of the times they use EX for new apps and TU for CLIs.

Jim
Jim

This is not a hard and fast rule. I’ve seen DPs suggesting both one and two HPs.

But, as a churner, you shouldn’t really be overly concerned about HPs anyway.

Rab
Rab

I am going to call and find out if its possible.
As i said i want to save a hp, i am not sure if it work or not.

Klad
Klad

BOfA uses same pull for 30 days.. Most of the times they pull EX for new apps and TU for CLIs

Rab
Rab

Do i need to call them or they will automatically use my last report which is less than 30 days?

Klad
Klad

No it’s system who uses the recent pull automatically.. rep may not know this and even if they do they might not tell you that..

Wong

Do you get the +25/50/75% extra reward points when you make the purchase or is it only when you redeem?

madage
madage

Purchase. No bonus on the 50,000 points.

Wong
Wong

Ahh, it’s earned upon purchase.

If you’re a Bank of America® Preferred Rewards client, you can enjoy 25% – 75% rewards bonus on every purchase. That means you could earn up to 3.5 points per $1 on travel and dining purchases and up to 2.62 points per $1 on all other purchases

My app went straight to pending. PH PR, four BoA CC. Approx 10/24. Not shocked. Will call later.

Cain
Cain

A while back there was a post that they are possibly limiting to four cards now. You may be able to get it if you agree to close one of your four.

madage
madage

Recon agent says BoA “wants to approve”, but can’t tell if it’s a straight approval or moving credit from other cards. Agent is supposed to call me back. Strange.

madage
madage

I finally called back today. Approved with similar credit line to my other four BoA cards (~15k).

madage
madage

In my online account, it is clear BoA reassigned credit from my BBR for the new PR. This is fine. I only charge $1/mo on BBR to keep the bonuses rolling in.

J.M.
J.M.

I am top tier PR (based on Merrill Edge) and have 3 CCs presently with BoA. Both my 2nd and 3rd cards were rather difficult to get – had to beg and plead with Recon to get them, so I’m not feeling too good about trying for a 4th card. My CS is over 800 on all three agencies.

Anyone tried reducing their overall credit limit with BoA before they apply for new cards? I know this works with Chase sometime (if you’re under 5/24).

I have the regular Travel Rewards, so this card would essentially replace that one (not sure what card I would PC it to, as BBR is dead I’ve heard, and I already have a Cash Rewards card).

J.M.
J.M.

The reason first given for denial both times was “client already has sufficient accounts with Bank of America,” so it sounds like they think that one card was enough (and then two cards was enough). Pretty sure they’ll say 3 cards is more than enough.

They never mention the overall CL being the issue. When I offered to move some of my CL the first time it worked; the second time they said no go, but then a banker called me back and went to bat for me (which was very surprising).

Kinda interesting that the BoA bankers don’t really see your Merrill balances – I had to tell them both times about it, even though the accounts are connected.

JB
JB

I would say don’t do it. I tried a similar strategy (bump down my credit limits $6K each on 2 current BoA cards) and they still won’t give me a 3rd card, whether it be an MLB card or today the Premier Rewards.

Hoping recon later today goes a bit better, as I fully intend to use this card to replace my Travel Rewards, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that BoA doesn’t budge (again).

ppsh
ppsh

I reduced my CL by 20k around 20 days prior to applying for Merrill+ (would have been my 5th BOA personal CC or 6th CC overall in 24 months), but got denied, even by reconsideration. But I read the reduced CL might take at least 30 days before becoming seen by the new accounts department.

Jim
Jim

I’ll concur here. I lowered my CL about 2 weeks before applying and credit dept didn’t see it either.

JB
JB

I lowered my CL in August in an effort to get a MLB Card – no go. Today the reps saw my lower CL and still – no go. They seem to be more interested in the number of cards (esp. newer cards) than in the overall credit limit.

paz
paz

Yeah, that too, the new rule of 4/24 BOA CC per a reddit post, as confirmed by my own experience. The only unclear is whether BOA coutns biz CC or not.

JB
JB

Wish that the information page had more info on the available travel insurance, as this is the one other improvement over the Travel Rewards card that might justify the AF.

New DP:

I’ve been waiting for this card to come out! Just applied online for both myself and my husband (separately). Both approved for the card with credit line of $21,000.

Hubs is Gold tier, and I am Platinum. We have checking, savings, ME IRA’s, and a Cash Rewards & Travel Rewards card each.

Now to call them to have them overnight the card since we’re leaving for a trip on Friday!

Thanks DOC for getting this post up first thing this morning!

Rebekka
Rebekka

Sorry, forgot to add. Hubs and I are both at 8/24 and I also have a BOA business credit card

Anne N.
Anne N.

Rebekka – have you had any luck getting BofA to expedite your card? Multiple calls to the Preferred Rewards line with no luck!

Rebekka
Rebekka

Anne-Yes!

It took forever. After calling the Preferred rewards line, being transferred and on hold for 30 minutes, the CS rep didn’t know what I was talking about. He transferred me again and I got disconnected.

Called back and it said 45-75 min wait…so I put my # in the queue for a callback.

Once I was called back it only took about 5-6 min. The front CS rep saw the new card and said she had to transfer me to a credit analyst to have it taken care of. A CA answered almost immediately, verified my identity, and put in the request to expedite my card. This was at around 2pm ET today. She said I should receive my card on Wednesday. I asked her if we could take care of expediting DH’s card also, but she said she needed to speak with him. Wasn’t able to conference him in but she gave me a direct # back to the CA dept. It is 800.667.9687. They are open 8a-7p.

I am going to have DH call tomorrow morning, so hopefully he’ll get his card on Thursday.

The long and short of this story is, don’t call the Preferred Rewards line, just call the Credit Analyst Dept directly!

Hope this helps!

Anne N.
Anne N.

Thanks Rebekka! Just tried calling and they are closed now, will try again tomorrow. I am really disappointed that requesting a card be expedited is so difficult as a Platinum Rewards Member. Anne

Rebekka
Rebekka

I agree…the Pref line is no better than any other number in my opinion. I was very disappointed also.

Anne N.
Anne N.

Rebekka – your contact number worked great! Thanks! A service rep answered immediately and my card will be delivered tomorrow. Anne

Rebekka
Rebekka

Awesome! Yes, update to my story…she said I would get the card by Thursday but I got a notification last night via my UPS app that it would be delivered today.

DH called that # this morning and was only on the phone for a few minutes also.

Cannot wait to get my hands on this card!!

Rebekka Alexander
Rebekka Alexander

My card arrived today! Hubby called this morning and I got a notification from UPS about an hour ago that his would be delivered tomorrow.

The card is pretty chintzy feeling. It’s uber thin and cheap feeling. If you don’t actually touch it, it looks OK from far away. Card # is on the back. Only name and “Preferred” shown on the front.

I will boycott or otherwise find a way to abuse BoA so hard if that happens. First account with them, and they pulled a report they were not given permission to (froze EX, called in, they asked what to pull, told them EQ… get approved, look and they took EQ and TU…)

I’ll report back if such issue happens.

Ferris
Ferris

You won’t boycott them unless you are a fool. You simply play by the rules. I don’t get why churners try to threaten they will boycott when they are the ones making a bunch of money off the banks. When a churner boycotts, the banks win.

Is it just me, or does it look like BoA may have rolled out some new application rules along with the rollout of this card? I’m seeing an awful lot of denial (or at least pending) DPs, including from people with high credit scores who don’t have many BoA cards. The pattern that I’m seeing suggests they’re looking back at least a couple months and denying people with a lot of recent applications.

I just got the instant denial. 12/24, my last approval in Feb. My last couple of applications have been instant denials. I hoped BOA might be different because I have BBRs and a savings account there. I’m guessing everybody’s tightening down against “churners.”

Applied for the card and it went to “review” status. Already got approved for Merrill + and Alaska this past June. Called recon and they just needed to verify my address (as I recently moved) and it was approved. This is my 3rd BoA card and I didn’t have to shift around credit limits. They are expediting my card as well.

Instant deny, also denied on recon. 5/24, ~760, 100k. No history with BOA. Rep said credit age too short (over two years…) and too many inquiries in last year (probably around 6 total).

Is it worth applying for other BOA cards today (Amtrak?) or will those be denied as well? I also only afterwards looked at the pre-qualified offers I have for BOA and the premium rewards 50k is on there… Should have gone through that link…

I never received the card today. Called the Preferred Rewards number and was told it was never sent out and they needed to have me speak to the credit card department. They got it sorted out and will send a card overnight but might be too late in the day at this point to receive tomorrow. I understand they probably got slammed yesterday and it was a new card and all, but this isn’t acceptable for a Top Tier client. The initial phone rep should’ve kept an eye on it and escalated later in the day if the account wasn’t active yet. It’s in my online banking today but of course I don’t have the full card number. Told them I need that card to book a Christmas trip. So frustrating.

To answer my question: Term and conditions don’t list any extra cashback at the Travel Center, only that the points can be redeemed there as well. In contrast, the Travel Rewards card T&C does list an extra 1.5% there.

This is lame. The no-fee card is *better* through the Travel Center: 4.125% vs 3.5%…

Anyone recently denied of Merrill+ (because of too many BOA cards, 4 in 24 months) has approval success with this card? If so, did this cost another HP, or did BOA use the recent Merrill+ HP for it? I don’t want to be the DP (13/24 on Exp already).

The T&C for this card also state that you can’t apply if you currently hold it or have applied in the last 24 months. So holding more than one won’t be possible unlike other B of A Cards.

I can confirm that you can transfer points from travel card to new BofA premium card

Charles

Yes the points transfer from Travel Rewards card. I already checked it out. Going to transfer my points before I close the Travel Rewards card.

That’s great news, thanks

Mike

They are not. I asked and he said it can’t be transferred to any card. You can redeem these points for 1 cents for cash back credit or to checking acct

Bank of America will tell you they are not transferrable but they are. I already checked it out online. It approved me to transfer my points from the Travel Rewards card to the Premium Card. I’ll just wait till the statement closing.

Automatically approved with a $16,000 credit limit.

Stats
– Top-tier Preferred Rewards
– 4 cards with Bank of America (BBR, Cash Rewards, Travel Rewards, Merrill+), all instantly approved
– Credit limit with Bank of America before this application is about $50,000
– 15/24, about 20 inquiries on Experian

Applied this morning. Went to pending. I’m a Platinum Honors customer with 2 BofA cards, Cash Rewards and Merrill+. I called the Preferred Rewards line and was transferred to a credit analyst. Eventually was approved with credit limit reallocations. No income questions from analyst. They pulled Experian, 826. LOL/24 applications. Card is being expedited to my address. Total time on the phone, less than 15 minutes.

JB

So how old are your BoA cards? I’m starting to think that more than two new BoA cards recently (6 months? 12 months?) is a red flag.

Applied and denied, waiting on letter but probably due to having 4 cards already. At least this gives me a free copy of the credit report post equifax hack. I didn’t figure I would get approved but thought it was worth a try. Will probably cancel my Alaska cards and try again in a few months if bonus still around.

App went pending this morning, then denied this afternoon when I checked. Approved for second M+ last week, and first M+ in June, and an Alaska Biz in February. $78k income, score at ~740. No HP for this application, they must have used the M+ HP. Will update when I call recon later.

3 (1 Merrill+, 1 Biz and 1 Alaska personal) between Feb-Jun 2017.

BOA customer since 90’s, I have strangely never denied for a BOA card (even back when I was going hard i.e 4 Apps every ~7 months..)

OTOH wifey and me are banned by City/Barclay for 2 years now, instant denials or for the later, account cancelled after Arrival+ approval and card received last June. Did one purchase at Dunkin Donuts then account suspended…Oh well!!!!

Oh yeah..didn’t bother with credit limit, etc…as read on FT

Hey, I never had annual fee cards, questions:
1. When and how do they charge it?
2. Can I spend this $3,000 within let’s say 2 weeks, get my bonus, cancel, and get annual fee refunded?
Just theory, I don’t think I will do it….

I don’t think they would take kindly to you doing that.

Just pay the annual fee. They are giving you $500. It’s people who do that kind of thing (get the bonus, cancel, try to get a refund) that ruin it for everyone else.

Denied immediately on application, also told there was no chance of approval from two different reps. “Client already has sufficient accounts.” Currently at 6/12 and 6/24, including two BoA cards opened in May 2017.

The first rep said I might have better luck if I waited until 6 months after my last cards were opened to reapply / reconsider (assuming she meant BoA cards only).

Ignatius Crumwort

Denied online – 3 BoA cards within last year, 2 actively used with M+ sitting there unused. No other recent card apps anywhere. Top tier rewards member, relationship since 1994. $56,000 total limit among the existing cards, from which I use about $3K. Experian 824. Need to call tomorrow during bankers hours to see what’s going on.

By the way, this site rocks!

Ignatius Crumwort
Ignatius Crumwort

Talked to a credit analyst; I was denied because I already have 3 BOA cards, and that is now their limit. Closing one or shifting credit limits would make no difference – they count the number of approved applications. He said the limit is 3 in 12 months, and 4 in 24 months. He gave me the date in February when I should apply if I want to be approved.

PT

Approved instantly for $12K

Based on stats below, it seems if you were light on apps the last 6 & 12 mo you are OK

10/24, 3/12 & 0/6
5-6 inquiries per credit bureau

2 BofA cards (Cash Rewards, Merrill+) – hardly used, $19K combined, (15 mo, 9 mo since opening)
Only have BofA savings acct with small amount (less than 1 yr old)

Dennis

Saw some rumors that BoA won’t approve you for this card if you have opened more than 2 cards with them in last 12 months. Applied today and was instantly approved for $21K and this was my 3rd card in last 10 months and 4th in last 13. They used a HP from 2 weeks ago from a Merrill Lynch+ CLI approval as I have all on ice now due to Equifax hack. I have no checking/saving or investment accounts with BoA

BOA application DOA
BOA application DOA

Denied instantly. First time in my life I’ve ever been denied a card. Even with a 25 year credit history without a single late payment and all 3 credit scores in low to mid 800s. Always pay bills in full on time; higher than average salary; good liquid assets; own house and 2 cars; low (2%) utilization rate. Never had any banking relationship with BoA and was trying to diversify; this was their first (and perhaps only) chance to get me as a customer, but they evidently didn’t want it. I assume they think I have too many recent cards (6/12 and 7/24). I considered calling recon line, but all the other posts here suggest it would just be a waste of time. I guess I’ll let AmEx and Chase continue to get the bulk of my merchant fees. Fine with me because the regular point structure and value of Sapphire Reserve and AmEx Plat is so much more lucrative than this cards. Not sour grapes, just basic math.

Ferris
Ferris

Don’t kid yourself that they need your business. You are obviously intelligent and making money off the big banks. They don’t see you as a profitable customer and as such denied you. Churning will continue to tighten until we have a recession and they are desperate for customers again. Just a business cycle. Our time will come again.

BOA application DOA
BOA application DOA

Fair enough. I understand that but am also keeping in mind that this card is different in one important respect: elevated tiers of earning based on assets held with BoA. Currently, my checking, savings, retirement, investment, and installment accounts are all with banks from whom I have no credit cards. If I had found this card and this card particularly useful and its customer service particularly helpful, it might have been the impetus for moving some (or all) of those accounts to a bank where it would be more mutually advantageous. I might even have considered abandoning the CSR for this card if the math had worked out. Now I’m far less inclined to let BoA see any of that business, which they could have initiated with a minimal investment with an ultra-low-risk client.

For what it’s worth, another unique factor in my situation is the fact that I live within eyesight of the BoA headquarters, in a city where you would think they would be especially eager to establish good relationships. Their name is on everything in this city…except my money. There is a fair chance now that when I buy my next house, it will be even closer to the BoA HQ yet serviced by a mortgage from a non-BoA institution.

Mike L
Mike L

Is having a BoA account a prerequisite for this card? I might be missing something, but it’s looking like all of the approval DPs had a preexisting relationship with BoA.

JimT
JimT

Doc,

An algebraic analysis of this card would help your readers understand the impact of the annual fee, annual spend, point value, percent annual spend on dining/travel, and the preferred rewards earning rate on the net return of this card compared to the no annual fee Citibank Double Cash and the B of A Travel Rewards credit card. The techniques are also applicable to other cards such as the AMEX 5% Blue Cash card I have used for many years. If you would like some help with the math and the resulting observations, I would be willing to collaborate with you on the article. This type of analysis would only be feasible with a website not posting affiliate links since banks will likely not want this level of detail readily available to the public.

Norm

or call in asking questions about things they could find the answers to, which in turn draws unnecessary attention to whatever issue at hand. I guess calling in about a hard inquiry is ok, but I really don’t see BoA caring so much about high inqs unless you’re new. Now if you’re new, good luck. Heck I had to have a cosigner on my first card with them. Was I mad? At first yes! I had waited what felt like an eternity to get my beloved amtrak guest rewards card since it was nerfed by chase and unavailable for signup. Started at 1400 CL, highest APR, and within 6 months it was no longer a joint account, after a year is at a much worthy limit and half the APR it once was. As a person who got the Better Balance Rewards card literally 1 week after it was discontinued, on top of two merril+ cards spread 8 months apart, and used for expense tracking, I am elated, and not frustrated that I’d probably get denied for this card. As much as I would like to, I’m not going to close one of the m+ cards until they are well over a year old. It would be at that point, I would love to have my 1 Amtrak, 1 BBR, 1 Alaska, and 1 Premier. But then again this sounds like some type of respectful churning post. After seeing barclays impose some 6/24 rule and everything else…. I guess its best to go slow and steady, but certainly don’t miss opportunities. TLDR, if you are already established with BOA, and have room, why not go for it.

The whole preferred rewards thing is nice too if you are eligible. But I think I could get a higher return at credit unions…

what are the chances of getting this card if the recent ML card application was denied by saying too many inquiries and not enough credit history. Both of the cards are offered by the same bank so I assume the same fate?

Note: I have had 2-3 ML cards in last six months.

Ferris

I’m not sure why you even posted this here, let’s think about this:

Application 1: Applied for BOA CC recently. Denied for too many inquiries and not enough credit history

Application 2: Applied for BOA CC.

You are talking about attempting the exact same thing. They will use the same credit report or pull a new one, which will show another inquiry and lower score. They will deny you for the same reasons because nothing has changed. Approval for churners is already around 10% only. Wait 6 months and apply again.

Exactly. I just came to this site for that exact reason. I might not have direct airline fees this year. If there is an alternative. I’d love to know about it.

PT
PT

Maybe this will help you figure out what qualifies? This is from the terms

Eligible travel expenses that qualify for the
Airline Incidental Credit must appear under
one of the following Airline MCC codes:
3000, 3001, 3057, 3058, 3063, 3066,
3132, 3174, 3196 or 3256.

madage

Those MCC codes appear to be generic codes for specific airlines. This will be interesting to test.

Peter
Peter

When you buy an airline ticket, the passenger name, departure date, and airport codes usually get sent to the credit card issuer. I bet they will give you a credit for any charge by a domestic airline that is missing that info as long as the dollar amount is reasonable, similar to the way Amex classifies it.

PT
PT

Here is more detail on the MCC codes

3000 United Airlines
3001 American Airlines
3057 Eastwest Airlines (Australia)
3058 Delta
3063 US Air (American Airlines)
3066 Southwest
3132 Frontier Airlines
3174 JetBlue Airlines

Before applying for M+ in Aug last month, I had trimmed down total BOA cards from 6 to 3 and was approved for M+. M+ became my 4th card.

I applied on Monday for the Premium Rewards, got the “sufficient number of accounts with us and/or affiliates” denial despite numerous recon attempts. The reason on the surface didn’t make sense to me since I just had 6 a month ago, and yes I’m aware that some people had their account count trimmed to 4 involuntarily, but that didn’t stop me from trying.

Finally, got some information from someone at the “Preferred credit team” after calling 1800-667-9687

1) There is a 3 approved BOA cards every 12 months and 4 approved BOA cards every 24 months rule, so 3/12 and 4/24. Though not entirely sure if this applies only when applying for Premium Rewards card or when applying for all BOA cards now.

2) You can have the Premium rewards card once every 24 months starting from the approved date.

3) If you have a “joint-applicant” on the Premium rewards card, that joint person cannot have their own Premium rewards card for 24 months.

4) At the end of 24 months, doesn’t matter if the previous one is still open or closed, you can apply again.

Though I understand this is just one rep’s words.

My August application made me hit the 3/12 ceiling, so there may be some truth to that, he suggested I applied again in December.

But then, I would’ve hit the 4/24 ceiling for my August application but got approved instead, so possible explanations are:
1) Timing: two of my 4/24 applications were on 8/28/2015, my Aug 2017 M+ app was on 8/16/2017. Close enough?
2) Perhaps the 4/24 only applies to the Premium card?
3) Rep got it all wrong?

Anyone hear anything similar?

john555

Yup, essentially what I was told. Their loss, moving out 250k+ back to schwab.

I wonder if there is also a 2/6 rule, as BoA has flatly refused to give me a 3rd card after I got a Travel Rewards and Cash Rewards in May. One recon rep did say I might have better luck if I waited for 6 months before applying for another card.

Are those all accounts with all banks or just BOA accounts? It seems like BOA is just looking at new BOA accounts

PLEASE who applied for Merrill Lynch Card recently then applied for any other Bank of America credit card – reply if you have new pull or they used your old pull within 30 days of your first application?
Banker said Merrill Lynch is different then BofA cards, and they will do new pull for “regular” Banks of America cards
thanks a lot!

SamSimon

Called Credit Department – they said don’t listen to bankers or managers they have no clue what they are talking about! They said Merrill Lynch is part of BofA and they will use same credit report within 30 days when applying for new BofA cards! I think I can trust Credit Department more than managers in local branches and bankers!

As more I know about banks – it’s like a WILD WILD WEST where most of people don’t know anything while working there or telling you lies!!! Always triple check all info!

Sam simon my friend, bofa will use the same report. Read my comment above, just apply for the card and it will not result in a new hp.
Also take a chill pill

SamSimon
SamSimon

Mate, Rab, a chill pill will not help! People in branches have no clue what they doing or talking! They don’t want to find out for you anything, they just lie or make up the answers! Today local branch M&T (banker and manager) told me all promos are dead, and they cannot open account for my friend for her first account with them and to attached the bonus – but I called Customer Service – they said all promos ongoing till October 31. How can I be chill if they are wasting my time…..

My Wife got approved and she already has the request for increase limit. Would they use the same credit pull or use another. They use experian for new accts and I think transunion for limit increases

I just applied today after being denied a M+ two weeks ago. My EQ hardpull was NOT reused. They pulled TU. (EX frozen since before the M+ application)

Instant approval.

Every single thing in this hobby is YMMV and no one, especially bank tellers, has the correct answers for you.

Saw this posted over on FlyerTalk…

I can confirm that a $50 AA virtual gift card did count for the airline incidental credit.

(Which didn’t come as a huge surprise since they also trigger Amex’s airline incidental credits.)

While the credit itself hasn’t shown up on my online activity yet, if you use the BofA app, after selecting the credit card account, you can go to “Premium Rewards Benefits”, and there will be an indicator showing how much of the incidental credit you’ve used for the year. Clicking on “View Activity” will show an itemized list of the transactions that have triggered the credit. For some reason, this feature is not yet active on the BofA web site (it directs you to use the app on the web site).

I never ever tried incidental credit. Thanks for the info! question, why did you buy $50 gift card, and not $100 ? can I buy $100 as one purchase and get credit?

SamSimon

AA giftcards are bought directly from AA.

https://giftcards.aa.com/

I’m wondering how to liquidate this gift card if I’m not planning on AA travel soon – T&C say AA may revoke the card if resold and force you to name the recipient when buying. (Just checked Delta, and they have similar wording.)

SamSimon
SamSimon

JB, thanks, crap T&C, it was my plan too, why they don’t allow me to sell my gift card…

Cant we not barter AA gift cards with Amazon or ebay cards from gc reseller sites?

Just keep it, and ask your friends to use it (and pay you back $45 or something) when they fly AA.

I’m a platinum honors member and have travel rewards only currently. Planning to apply for the premium rewards card and convert the travel to cash rewards.
Any cons for doing this?
For the $100 incidence credit, if I buy the american airlines gift card, how do i resell it if am not planning to use it in the near future?

Larry
Larry

I have had the Travel Rewards card for a couple of years and got the Premium Rewards card when it first became available. I transferred about 19,000 points from the Travel Rewards account to the Premium Rewards account (which I had set up to automatically transfer to my BofA checking account monthly). At the end of last month, my checking account was credited with $190 and my Premium Rewards points balance went to zero. So, that all works like a charm.

Having cash at 1 cpp is better than offsetting offsetting travel expenses (at 1 cpp) that have been charged to the card. The only issue (and it’s a minor annoyance) is that, to get the cash, you can write a check or go to a BofA ATM. EFT’ing the money out of the account will incur a charge of at least $3 (depending on how many days you’re willing to wait for the EFT to go through).

Yeah, I’m really hoping BoA gets rid of that fee, which most bank don’t charge.

You can easily “pull” the cash from the BoA account from another bank or credit union that does free transfers, which is what I usually do if I’m not planning to use to pay bills.
