Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

If you live in AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL NM or TX then the best account to open is the BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking as this has no monthly fees to worry about. Otherwise open the Clearconnect checking account which also has no monthly fees to worry about. There is a $3 fee on ClearConnect for paper statements, so make sure you opt for paperless statements.

ClearChoice Saving: has a $15 quarterly fee if the balance falls below $500. ClearConnect Saving has no monthly fees.

Early Account Termination Fee

Account needs to be kept open for one year or bonus is forfeit

Our Verdict

This is a frequent offer now that we see on a regular basis. No household restriction this time, so can do this if somebody in your household has already done this. Will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

  • Hi anyone know what to do now that BBVA is moving to PNC in 3 days? Do I need to do anything? Do i still have to wait a year? I got my bonus on March, opened account in February

    • I'm going to close my account even though I got the bonus in March too. I signed up for BBVA, not PNC is my justification.

    • Good question–I'm curious as well. I hope the BBVA bonus time doesn't count towards future PNC bonuses.

  • 8/10: Called to close checking and savings accounts. The rep mentioned it takes two business days to process the request then an additional 30 days to close. The 30-day window is to ensure no transactions post.

9/13: Called again to verify my accounts were closed since I can still see them on the dashboard. The checking account closed successfully as of 8/11. My online statement shows a closing statement date of 8/11. My savings account was still open for some reason. The last transaction posted on 8/3 so it should have been closed with the checking account. My online statement shows a closing statement date of 8/31, similar to previous months' statements closing as of month-end. The new rep said it will take 24-48 hours to close. I will call back on 9/16 to confirm and provide an update.

    • 9/14: Received an email stating my Savings account was removed from online and mobile baking access. I received similar emails on 8/11 about my Checking account and associated Debit card. I’m assuming the Savings account closed successfully now, but I will wait for my statement to generate to make sure 9/13 is the statement close date.

  • Seems it is no longer an option to close account through chat. Chat is available but its a bot tree and it directs you to call if it isn't one of the few options it can handle.

  • Anyone get their $50 savings bonus? We are past June 30 but mine has not posted.

    • I was just told that it would be by Aug 31. The rep was surprised I received my checking bonus so quickly

      • Thanks for the info! Quite the wait until Aug 31...
I guess I will just leave around $1000 in savings and move anything else out of that account.

    • I have the same question. I read the offer again to see if it says when the bonus will be deposited. The $200 for the checking acc was deposit very fast.

  • @will regarding "Early Account Termination Fee - Account needs to be kept open for one year or bonus is forfeit", since BBVA is merging into PNC, I called BBVA and said that I did not want to have my account merged into PNC and asked to close my checking and savings accounts. The rep said that as long as the accounts both had a $0 balance, the process would be quick and easy. I closed my account ~4 months after opening the account and the rep did not mention anything about an early account termination fee.
