Butterfly Saves: Get Discounts At Major Retailers

Introduction

Butterfly Saves seems to be a relatively new site. It’s primary function is a shopping portal with a browser extension, the idea being that it automatically activates cash back at 2,800+ merchants (similar to Honey). To me that part of the site isn’t that interesting as the cash back rates aren’t that exciting when compared to Topcashback or eBates.

eCodes

What is more interesting is the fact they have a shop where you can purchase eCodes at a discount. For example, they have a $20 Target code for $10. When I first looked at Butterfly Saves I thought this was just an eGiftcard, but that isn’t the case. This article attempts to explain the process:

  • You pay for the code
  • They place funds into your Butterfly account
  • Purchase from the merchant, making sure to click activate
  • Get $20 back via PayPal or other methods a few days after your order

You can only use one code per transaction, but according to this article it can be done repeatably (e.g using four $20 eCodes won’t work for an $80 purchase but four separate purchases of $20 would work. Note that you’re usually limited to one eCode per day).

Warnings

  • They will most likely overwrite other portals. I guess the way they make money is by having their browser extension added and then they make a commission whenever you make a purchase, some of this is passed onto you but not all. This means if you have the browser extension added it will overwrite you going through any other portal, so if you want to make sure of the eCodes you’ll have to reinstall/turn on the extension and then turn it off after you’re done if you want to use other portals.
  • Some eCodes are for new customers only. For example this $20 Walmart for $10.
  • Note exclusions. Most codes say no expiration, no production exclusions and also not valid on gift cards.
  • Spend requirements exclude tax & shipping.

They have an affiliate link but in the end I decided not to add it to the post just yet, I’d like to see some reader experiences with the site before gaining financially from it. As always, if it seems too good to be true it probably is.

Signed up, paid $10 for $20 Target eCode using my credit card. Received eCode confirmation email within 10 minutes. Went to Target and purchased ~$23 Four Kleenex tissues (4Packs) currently on sale with 5% subscription discount. Paid with $10 Target gift card and Target Red Card for additional 5% off the rest. Received butterfly $20 cashback payments in two hours via Paypal.

All (or almost all) of the 50% codes (pay them $10, get $20 cashback after $20 purchase at retailer) are NEW CUSTOMERS ONLY. After that, the codes are a rip-off/scam where you pay them more than the retailer only cashback portion and then get an inflated value of useless credit towards DiningAdvantage by Entertainment.com, TicketRewards, or Travel Savings Credit with Privileges, an American Express Travel Representative.

Totally worthless (outside of possibly getting the initial $10).
