Chase Considering 5x On All Purchases Using Mobile Wallet For Freedom Cardholders

Several readers & reddit user zXFDz have reported receiving a survey from Chase regarding 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points on all purchases made using a mobile wallet on the Chase Freedom card. The survey had two statements:

  • Get cash back from your mobile wallet every day. Make Chase Freedom your default payment to earn 5% cash back on every purchase and get the full earning potential of your Chase Freedom card.
  • Enjoy the convenience, security, and earning power of Chase Freedom in your mobile wallet. Enroll your card and earn 5% cash back on every purchase

Survey respondents were asked the following for each statement:

  • How clear do you find this statement?
  • Overall, how appealing do you find this statement?
  • Would you make Freedom your default mobile wallet payment based on the statement below?

Chase is already offering 5x points per $1 spent as a rotating category for mobile wallet purchases in Q1, so I suspect they will use data from that when making a decision as well. If they do add mobile wallet purchases as an ongoing offer, I still expect it to fall under the $1,500 spending cap that the rotating categories currently offer. It’s also possible that this would replace those categories as well, although I think they would still want to compete directly with the Discover it.

Personally I don’t see Chase introducing this, what’s more realistic is them introducing this but limiting it to Chase Pay mobile payments only. I also haven’t heard anything from my normal Chase sources, but I wouldn’t expect any sort of formal announcement or even decision until after the end of Q1 anyway.

I would consider dropping my altitude card if I got 5% on all apple pay payments form freedom. Altitude gives me 4.5% travel credit on all app purchases with no limit.

Samsung Pay users will get $0.20 per transaction each time they use Samsung Pay + 5% cashback from Chase. The $0.20 per transaction reward already paid for my used Galaxy S6!

My guess is that Samsung Pay is giving them a run for their money

They might just do something like $10 off as what they did for VISA checkout. 5% doesn’t sound realistic to me.

No way 5% UR points without limitations. That reward will crush any competitors.

They’re probably just ironing out their advertising for the upcoming quarter.

Coin flip. IF I have a choice of the traditional plastic CC vs Chase pay both being the same 5x reward rate, I choose plastic. I have used Chase Pay recently because it paid over and above the current quarter’s plastic CC reward limits.

I concur. Purchased 2 gift cards through Samsung pay as Christmas gifts with US Bank Altitude Reserve VISA and they shut down my account. They said I breached Cardmember agreement and that the two $40=$50 Gift cards were “patterned or excessive.” This was out of nearly 50+ transactions totaling over $6000. Needless to say I closed every account with them. Hope Chase takes whatever customers they have left!
